I've actually been loving Trent's Series too - its great hobby motivation and reminds me of the crazy stuff I used to make for my old chaos armies - who needs a door to the tank when you can sculpt a toothy maw? 😀 Honestly this video came at an interesting time for me, because I've been having similar thoughts of shifting some game time to 40k - but having been out of the hobby for a while (5 years...I think), I actually felt a bit intimidated by the changes in the lore and not knowing things...which was a scary, alien feeling for a lore nerd like me! Hearing your own experiences with coming at it completely fresh is encouraging and made me realise - it doesn't really matter. I'll learn the lore again, because that kinda just who I am. But in the meantime? I can do whatever I want - and just have fun :)

Ah man totally get this. Thought I'd never get back into 40k, too complicated, too rigid, too much ego but it's not... Started binging lore videos on KZbin, thought this is actually pretty sweet. Picked up the chaos starter and was blown away by the detail of the models. Then watched The Grimdark Compendium painting tutorials on KZbin and stayed up until 3am painting! Love the dirty, grim style of painting.

Ah, to be young again and in love with GW. I hope BMC has a lot of fun with 40k. I also hope he takes the dive into specialist games and 40k alternatives. I've been pretty jaded since 6th. Edition 40k and the squatting of WHFB. But man do I still love some Mordheim/Wyrd Wars and Necromunda. I've also been getting into historical wargames, which have a surprising amount of /yourdudes/ and customization. Diving into the history of some random military unit on what they were wearing on one specific day in an obscure war is rewarding in itself.

Aaaahhhhh..... No! Don't get me wrong. I'm fully stoked Jeremy is finally in to painting and playing some 40k. But even the cult style joke of "One of us, One of us" is kind of wearing on me now a days with all of this groupism/tribalism that seems to be happening both RL and on social media. Let's just play games, hobby and have some fun. To me that is why I liked all of my geeky passions because they tended to have less social rules and structures. More just show up, show your love for whatever it is and have fun with the people who also were there for the same reasons.

Social media, trendism and tribalism coupled with, "look, me first" in everyone's attempt at internet fame and trying to turn their hobby into a career, has become annoying. Just 10 years ago, videos such as this were still pretty rare. Now everything is oversaturated with it to the point that there has become a certain kind of social "rules" attached to everything, overanalyzing everything, and so many trying to get gimmicky so as to try and set themselves apart from so many others that are trying to do the same thing.

As a long time miniature painting contest participant, the most liberating thing that I rrealized few years ago was to absolutely not care about if you paint in an "academic" way or not. I've been crashing myself on the GW painting style for years and never liked it. And now that I'm doing my painting in my way, more like illustrations, using oils and airbrush, my style has leveled up so much, and paradoxically, I win more medals in contest, my armies get noticed more by people on the table, and get more painting commissions since that.

adding an airbrush to my arsenal, and adopting an " I em not trying to live up to anyone's standards I just wan't to have fun, get paint on models, and models onto the table top to play . no one in my playgroup is judging my work, They are all non hobbyist players anyway, to them all miniature painting is miraculous, They just love the painted models, and terrain. We are all ways are own worst critics. in the end its about immersion not cartilage photography lvl protection.

When I first heard of 40k I wasn't interested. "Wargame" to me meant something like Call of Duty, which just isn't my style. As my friends got into it they eventually badgered me into joining them. I spent what I thought would be a huge waste of money. I hated putting together the models, and I most certainly wasn't into the idea of painting. My first game... I got stomped, and I was ready to quit. After much begging from my friends, I shifted gears and got my current army... Death Guard. As I built and played and eventually painted, I fell in love with the hobby and the entire wargaming genre. I'm currently the farthest along in painted models among my friends, with plans to do much more. All it takes to find something you love is a shift in your perceptions, and a willingness to try, and I'm glad you found that much like I did. Really looking forward to see where you go from here!

Having painted up my Tyranids in reef-living tropical fish colors, trust me: as long as it *looks good* then the models are A-Okay, regardless of what specific scheme or method your chose.

Tropical fish Tyranids sounds fucking awesome. I think he did a good job painting these plague marines. Too often people just flick various yellow and green paints all over them before a brown ink wash. Jeremy actually took the time to paint rust, corrosion, and patina to help give some good outlines while still looking like Nurgle-infested warriors.

That does sound rad! However, I have a question about putting an army together. I’m not a huge fan of the Plaguebearer models. Can I use a different model that isn’t even in Warhammer to stand in for them? I found a mushroom man model that I think would work perfectly as a spreader of plague, death, and rot. So I feel like Grandfather Nurgle would be okay with it. I just want to make sure I can play them too.

"I don't care" can be a surprisingly positive thing sometimes. For me, it was very similar with Warhammer AoS. I really liked the cool looking ghosts, but not a lot of the bigger models and hated GW's skeletons. I wanted to make my OWN skeletons and weird undead critters to join GW's spooky ghosts but felt like I was breaking all these rules. Then it clicked: who cares? This is for me. Now I'm rattling through a Death army I've come to genuinely love. If that means some people don't want to play me because I'm using skeletons from a different company, that's fine. It's worth it to me to have built something I love.

Unless it is a santioned tournment, where it may be mandatory to use GW stuff (although I think that you can modify the models... Just need to be identifiable as being theirs), and some may even be peeky and twitch their nose if the paint scheme is not "exact", most of the times people do enjoy seeing good models. And fighting seeing a nicelly done representation of a figure is always better. If both players agree that the figure corresponds to the game figure, hell, you can even make a stick figure with chopsticks! If they look better than the original, well, I'd enjoy to play with them even more! So what if it is not the original one?...

I feel this hard. Been a DM for 3 years straight. Had a sci fi Warpshell group for 1 year. We were close to the last arc when all this happened. I finally just told them I was burned out. We decided to go on hiatus and resume when I have the energy to finish the story strong. I appreciate your honesty here. I'd imagine given your place in the community made it scary to talk about. Exactly this! It can be hard to stay invested and enjoy it as a DM its so much work -though its easy to lock yourself in mentally to doing more than is really needed, and your players should understand if they throw you a real curve ball it might have to wait till next session(or if they prefer doing it with rougher maps or no map etc). Even worse if your players are unreliable on turning up on time, complain that something didn't happen the way they want it to etc - really hard to keep motivated if the players repeatedly don't seem to be that invested in it, or are not willing to adapt from what they expected when the die/situation gets away from them - complaining that they didn't personally get to kill every single raider. Not saying those players were bad friends or people to have in a game really, but its easy to put in so much work and feel underappreciated (even when its really not true - it was rarely the same player twice and many times they did at least warn me of the last min change etc, but it feels wrong and can be very awkward to run a campaign aimed at 7 odd players and sometimes get 3 with little or no warning..).

I just wanted to say this has been one of my favorite videos you've done in a while..why? I think you have captured what its like to turn a corner in life. I suffer from depression, something I tried to ignore for most of my life. I didn't want to get help or take medication. But a very dark time occurred and I had nowhere to go. Or that's what I thought. The people in my life cared enough about me to make me take a look at myself, turn inward, so to speak. These days medication helps me out. Not to mention talking with others and focusing on hobbies. Sometimes making a change is what you need to get you restarted. In your case, the hobby you love so much just became larger and more expansive. And that's cool as, because as a fan, I want you to have that spark. It in turn kicks me into gear. What Im trying to say in a long winded way is, dude, thanks for getting the passion back. Your enthusiasm shines out and I for one like it.

This is where I was 9 months ago when I bought my tau army. Burned out on D&D and crafting new items to upload. I realized I was building terrain and furniture that I wasn't able to use when our group stopped getting together. I put my time into filling out a 3000 point army played a bunch of 8e warhammer. I've spend most of this time off from crafting into developing a gateway wargame that I play with my kids and friends. Cheers to your journey and I hope you get as much enjoyment out of 40k as possible. Your plague marines look killer and beautifully painted man. I'm super jealous. If we ever make it to a con together, maybe we can battle it out! And for the Greater Good!

As someone who admits he is shit at painting minis, I can still take pride in my work because it is MY WORK. It's also a pleasant surprise when something turns out way better than I expected. I actually thought about getting back into 40k and going the poorhammer route, but after watching a 'learn to play' vid I realized I'd forgotten more about the rules than I care to re-learn. Either my memory is complete garbage or they massively overhauled the rules in the past 20 years because I don't remember half of that crap. C'est la vie. I miss my Orks but 40k is too complicated to teach to my kid. We're gonna be doing Frostgrave instead. Best of luck to you though, Jeremy. I hope this gets your creative juices flowing, and given than I'm subscribed to several channels that ONLY do 40k terrain I don't mind watching how-to videos about the topic.

I love blanchitsu, because, in my experience, it leans more heavily on aesthetic and style, instead of realism and neat details. I can't do photorealistic art to save my life, so I exaggerate the colours and go heavy with washes. Yes, I use too much nuln oil. I'm a walking example of every stereotype attached to that fucking stuff.
