My son was diagnosed on his 4th Birthday. His blood sugar was 1350. He had severe DKA. I’m so happy that he was treated at a wonderful hospital. I will never forget the week before or the day he was diagnosed. - I had taken him to the doctor for his yearly checkup. The doctor checked his blood sugar and it was 79. The doctor said he always did blood sugar tests at his patients yearly checkups. My son wasn’t having any symptoms of diabetes at that time. He was just recovering from a stomach virus. At least that’s what everyone thought. I worked 12 hour shifts at that time so my oldest son and husband looked after Ben for me. I worked night shift so I slept until twelve in the afternoon. I kept hearing my oldest son tell Ben that he can’t drink any more water. I asked my oldest son why he would not let Ben have a glass of water. My oldest son told me that Ben had 3 eight oz glasses of water in 20 minutes. The furthest thought from my mind was diabetes. I didn’t know what the symptoms were. I thought Ben was just drinking a lot to make up for being sick. The next day I took the kids to McDonalds. Ben ate 2 Big Mack’s and drank 2 shakes. He was so hungry. I thought, well, he must be on a growing spurt. However, when he through up I knew something just was not right. I called his doctor. The doctor was not concerned. He said that at least Ben was drinking enough and keeping hydrated. I told the doctor that I want more tests done. It was Friday and the doctor said to bring him in on Monday for more tests. That night I had to work my 12 hour shift. My husband watched Ben. At 4 am my husband called me and told me to get home quick. I arrived home to find Ben soaking wet. He was so skinny and breathing heavily. We lived out in the country. We decided to take him to the hospital because it takes EMS 20 mins. The emergency room doctor thought that we had starved our child. This is how ignorant the medical community are concerning Type 1 diabetes. A pediatric nurse figured out that it was diabetes. She could smell the Ketones in my son’s breath. The ER doctor order a blood test. His blood sugar was through the roof. It was 1350. He had to be rushed to children’s hospital. Ben is 19 now and doing well. Thank you for sharing your story.

oh my goodness. That sounds terrifying, but thank you so much for sharing. I have Cystic Fibrosis and CF related diabetes. I'm so grateful that I was monitored for diabetes so closely because of my CF and was able to avoid such a scary experience. I monitored blood sugars for about a year before my actual diagnosis, and then had a higher A1C, which prompted a glucose tolerance and a CGM study for two weeks that showed elevated numbers. I'm glad you're still here to share yourself with us! Keep up the good work! :)

I’m a competitive gymnast and I was 427 when diagnosed. I had mono on and off and on and off. In sixth grade I weighed 48 pounds! My family is all really small, but my mom was concerned because that was really small. I got diagnosed right after Christmas.

Margaret Where I grew up in Missouri schizophrenic children when I was younger ran around Missouri and told the doctors do not treat this person for Type 1 Diabetes. So I went twenty five years without being diagnosed......... and those schizophrenic children that grew up to be adults, one of them is dead and the other one happens to be my 21 year old brother. He's going to prison and my diagnosis didn't fucking happen until January of 2020. I had to fucking call the cops because children with schizophrenia told doctors for years to just develop voices in your head....... so I was very very sick all my life and in and out of DKA. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱 So now I feel like I have to call 911 everytime I need help because instead of getting T1D supplies I got tubes drilled into my head. People around Missouri are crazy and one of my friends her name was Courtney..... she actually died. Her Type 1 Diabetes was not cared for. I called the Springfield Missouri police department and had a fucking cow. Here is what happened, ten years ago on May third 2010 my step father was beat to shit because of Thomas Moles Jr. and Thomas Moles Sr. and I was not happy. It was crack and cocaine that started the fight. My step brother Jacob gave crack and cocaine to everyone of my mother's neighbors. I was pist off and I am extremely allergic to the smell and I am also Visually Impaired and I can smell it from 400 yards away. I could smell it through my mother's entire neighborhood.

I got diagnosed 6 months ago, I thought that my blood sugar was 780, but 4 days ago my mom told me that I was over 1000

My BG was at least 500 when I got diagnosed. They don’t know because the meter that they had capped out at 500. They were able to tell by my blood work that generally my BG was in the 300s roughly three months before getting diagnosed.

Mine was 487 mg/dl I was 7 and was really dehydrated and sick I had DKA for probably 2 days I was so weak and tired. They gave me a saline and insulin infusion 2 hrs later I was 190 mg/dl and starving. They served lunch at noon and I ate a special diabetic lunch. They asked me if I prefer fish or chicken I said fish and I got some veggies, cup of sugar free jello red color and my first diet coke. I was diagnosed in Mexico.

I have been thirsty and peeing a lot recently so my friend said we could check my blood sugars but I am totally fine so idk why I’m thirsty

How often do you have to go to the bathroom as a diabetic?

??? When first diagnosed as a diabetic, or the three months leading up to being diagnosed, diabetics urinate very frequently. Every hour or more often. That is because diabetics are drinking water almost non stop before being diagnosed. And that is because the body is telling the soon to be diabetic to drink, drink, drink non stop. And that is because all of the excess sugar in the blood stream is being filtered by the kidneys. So the kidneys are collecting way too much sugar from the blood. And the kidneys need to dispose of all this excess sugar. And the kidneys can only do this by urinating. And you only urinate if you drink water, fluids. Going to the bathroom, urinating, is to get rid of some of the excess sugar. Diabetes is lack of insulin to get sugar out of the blood and into the cells to be used. Once a diabetic is diagnosed and is using insulin and hopefully controlling blood sugars so they are somewhat normal, then urinating, going to the bathroom, is identical to non diabetics. Depends on how much fluid you drink and perspiration and all the other stuff affecting going to the bathroom.

I think mid 1980s is when blood sugar meters came into use by diabetics. Daily use by regular diabetics. Maybe some special test subjects were using them before the mid 1980s. Urine test strips or the pills you placed into test tubes were the sugar meters before the blood sugar meters. Not very accurate or precise. Blood sugar meters were a big, important advancement.
