I haven’t played this game because I would die from rage, but I want to try to give tips. I think you already know that bubbles in the water mean that the octopus will strike. You can bait it by quickly running to the tile the octopus will strike and running away. I’d try to get fishing as soon as you get the second quest. Try to get to a tier of plants that isn’t the starter plants as soon as possible for money, then get the plant type you need for the quest when you get it, and when you are close to finishing with the plant quest, get juicy cucumbers (the final tier plant). Play normal mode to unlock all the pets. That’s all I can give, and it probably ain’t much, but I tried.
