Port wine stains (PWS), also known as capillary malformations, are a type of birthmark that affect 0.3-0.9% of newborns. They are permanent red or blue marks that are present at birth and can appear anywhere on the body, but are most common on the face, neck, arms, legs, and scalp. PWSs are caused by a mutation in a gene called GNAQ that prevents chemical signals in tiny blood vessels from turning off, causing the blood vessels to enlarge and the skin to turn red. They are not inherited from parents and are not caused by anything the mother does or doesn't do before or during pregnancy.
