I use these videos with my 6mnth Black Lab retriever Lady Girl. I have found these videos amazingly helpful , we get so many compliments on her behavior and play. We too have also started water exercise. She loves it and is a natural swimmer and will get right in.

We had a 10 year old mixed breed that we rescued off the Tennessee road that would beat all the Labs on swimming and retrieving. Then we got a Doodle puppy. She wanted to swim. But couldn't quite get it at first. Then she figured out the dog paddle retrieve at about 8 months and she loves it. But she could never beat Trent.

I didnt do a lot of training he just hung around me. Gaining his trust was difficult. I had to prove I would help him out. He knew I would jump into action to save him if he got in trouble.

Quick question... My Aussie puppy is teething, she's 5 mnths old. Would you recommend playing, even just fetch, while there's a risk she'll hurt her mouth? I'm really worried about killing her drive to carry things in her mouth but I'm also really worried she won't develop a good fetch if I leave it too long.
@StandingStoneKennels4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the question! We would recommend holding off on retrieving until all her adult teeth are in!

I just took my 11 week old out to the beach on Wednesday when it was 95 degrees and a 110 degree heat index. I just carried her out to a little ways beyond where she could touch and just did the sink or swim challenge. She swam back to shore easy. Everything went well.

Our last Vizsla (August 15, 2004 - December 5, 2019) loved the water and swimming BUT she swam like a drowning horse on swimming desire she would get 10/10 and a 0/10 on style points while our last German Longhair Pointer (August 13, 2005 - August 22, 2017) would get 10/10 on both The strange thing was while our Vizsla swam like a drowning horse she made it work for her so much so that in any swimming race she would beat our German Longhair Pointer when retrieving various objects.

Just re-watched this. Been hitting fun water work with My 9mnth for the last month or so. Will retrieve infinitely if can stay on tippytoes. Had the odd butt float and few splashy strokes but not anything I can describe as swimming yet. Water really disappearing fast now in the UK so getting up early tomorrow and we're both going in!!! wish me luck.

@@StandingStoneKennels couldn't crack it last year but managed a couple of 'real' swims so far this year. Still reluctant and it's not really clicked yet which is a shame as it means we can't enter working tests. We'll keep at it though!

I carry my 5 month old GSP into the pool and she just swims out as fast as possible. She also is not a natural retriever (unless it's last season's deer legs from bushes). If it wasn't for the fact loves to flush pheasants on her daily walks I'd doubt her hunting credentials lol

My dog will go after bumpers even deeper ones but absolutely sucks at swimming. I've read people start with life jackets to get the dog the feeling of swimming. Is this a good idea or just keep working at it? She's just over a year.

Hi is it safe to let my dogs swim in lake/creek water? and how do i avoid an ear infection or stop him from getting sick
@Kick-b9m Жыл бұрын
Talk to your vet about it would probably be best
@StandingStoneKennels4 ай бұрын
You would definitely want to make sure the water is clean and free from any harmful bacteria or algae! And working with your vet if your dog gets and ear infection or sick from swimming would also be really important!

did some water intro with our 7 week lab over the week. First, I jumped in the stock tank and let him do some assisted swimming in my arms. Then, we went to the park/lake and did a couple of fetches at the waters edge on a different day for some fun time. Training question....our pup bites our hands and feet a lot when hes excited and playing. we keep saying no, or substitute toys whenever possible, but he always comes back to the hands and arms. Any advice to correct this habit? This biting is our biggest challenge at the moment.

With a puppy that young the way they explore their world is by mouthing objects or by biting What worked for us with the last four puppies we have raised in addition to what you are doing is make a painful sound the second that your puppy makes skin contact with his teeth and immediately move away from him sort of curl up in a chair and 'ignore' him for a few minutes. Then only tentatively start to play with him and the second he starts to mouth you yipe and play time is over and repeat the process. It may take a little while but your puppy will learn that humans are wimps and any mouthing of their humans ends any and all play time activities.

I have a cocker spaniel who obviously loves water ,she is nearly two now and can not swim .She tries to swim but she is vertical in the water and can not move forward easily. I heard its because she has a u shaped neck. Does anyone know how I can get her to swim horizontally?
@StandingStoneKennels4 ай бұрын
Getting a life jacket for her to get comfortable swimming and floating and realizing she can use her back legs might be a good idea!

My GSP, Sadie, is collar conditioned to recall but when I throw a bumper she will chase it down, pick it up, and start running off with it, so I use the collar and ask her to recall and she does but she drops the bumper. What do I need to do, so that she will bring bumper back to me without dropping it?
