My dog does this. I got him when he was two and he came with it. He is a west siberian laika, and they have a lot of drive for foraging. It is a foraging behavior to collect things and stash them. However, I have him on about 5 acre gps fence, so, he's gonna come in to contact with rocks a lot. I know most trainers will disagree with letting him roam like that, but that's what I prefer for him. I tried to break him of this for a long time, using different methods and nothing worked. I've given up. I have noticed that he's very careful when he picks the rocks up. No doubt it will eventually do damage to his teeth but, i've accepted that possibility. If the alternative is keeping him kennelled all day, it's just not worth it to me.
