i actually kind of like anya taylor joy because she’s fluent in spanish, lived in argentina for years, her dad is argentine and her mum’s father is spanish. she’s talked in an interview about feeling too english to be argentine and too argentine to be english, and i think evelyn feels a similar sense of displacement being both cuban and american. obviously cuba and argentina are vastly different, but they share similar spanish colonial history and language. she’s not the perfect fit but her comments rlly remind me of evelyns.

@@barbie5607 thanks for replying. i know anya isn’t the right fit because she’s very much white and benefits from that (esp. shown in the very white roles she’s able to play, e.g. emma from jane austen and people like beth harmon). i was just discussing how the cultural displacement anya has spoken about in interviews between her argentine/english heritage reminded me of stuff evelyn says in the book about feeling neither cuban or american enough to fit in. i’ve written other comments about how i’d love to see someone like melissa barrera or leslie grace play evelyn, or an actress whose actually cuban, but i’m not very familiar with many latin american actresses. most spanish-speaking media is euro-centric and not american/latin american focused. ngl i haven’t listened to any podcasts by the author, but i was kinda confused by evelyn’s descriptions throughout the book; from the writing it’s obvious she’s cuban and has darker skin, but she’s also treated as entirely white-passing for most of the book which was confusing given how racist 1950s/60s society was and how narrow the idea of whiteness was, plus the cover i had depicted evelyn as a white girl? it was kinda jarring to me and kinda made me confused about how dark evelyn would have been. i know there was some commentary in the book about the ‘but you’re mexican’ kind of remarks, i wish there was more intersectional discussion of evelyn, or at least more cohesion with the cover design etc. (which taylor would have seen bc authors have to approve these). what was the podcast bc i’d love to hear more? also sorry if my comment came across as whitewashing or erasing a POC character; wasn’t my intention but i totally see how it perpetuates the idea that evelyn is a white woman (particularly to ppl who maybe havent read the book). would love to hear any suggestions for darker skinned latina actresses that could play evelyn if you know any :)

i think you chose very talented ppl yet i don't think they are nowhere near how the characters actually are or should be, like evelyn is a latina and you still chose 2 different women who aren't latinas and the ones that are latina are either white or nowhere near close to evelyn's skin tone. also choosing sophia wiley for monique is a bit odd bc monique is on her late 30s and sophia doesn't look that "old"

i just read evelyn hugo last month and same girl, i could not put it down. it was so good, and evelyn's insistent focus on making sure that people understood that she was bi - YES, i felt that in my bones. i love your mind seriously, like how do you even come up with all of these ideas? i can totally see all of them, but especially olivia as young evelyn.. in that dress/wig... iconic.

This was an interesting take, I totally get that it was a ‘dream cast’ and I enjoyed it but immediately the Monique and Frankie actresses would be waaaaay too young. Monique herself is 38-39 and she talks about Frankie being older so I’m guessing she’s supposed to be mid 40’s. I did like a lot of your other picks though! Love the book so much!

in my opinion, young celia should b anya taylor joy, and older celia should be nicole kidman. Gosh evelyn is a wild card for me but i think she could be played by a lot of different actresses

I think Harry Styles would probably do better as Mick Riva. I know he doesn't look as much like Elvis as Austin Butler does, but I think it would be a waste to put such a talented and diverse actor such as Butler into such a small role. Whereas Harry Styles himself is a musician and would therefore have experience and insight that Butler does not. I am aware that Austin Butler makes music, but he is nowhere on par with Harry Styles' fame and longevity. We have also seen from Styles' acting career in the past that he does a much better job at playing side characters (e.g., Dunkirk/Eternals) than main characters (Don't Worry Darling). Plus, Harry Styles did try out for Baz Luhrmann's Elvis but was eventually turned down. I don't think Austin Butler is looking to be type cast. Harry Syles would make a fabulous Mick Riva.
