I love seeing young men like yourself appreciate fine sporting rifle made from military actions from ages gone by. Not all military rifles was sporterized by Bubba. Some are works-of art . I own a Sedgley 03 Springfield that was done in the 1920’s that I’m quite fond of. I saw Sedgley Krag the other day that has to be the most beautiful rifle I’ve ever seen. I’ve been going to G-shows for 60years. Beautiful Mauser spotters built in England after the Great War are like owning a piece of fine art. I love the attention to detail that you show. Build a rifle can be passed down to your grandchildren so they can appreciate fine rifles from ages gone.

Man this is going to be epic! Looking at that stock....so many possibilities to finish up that stock. Obviously needs sanding, smoothing. I'd do like a urethane glossy finish. Might even be worth it to put some inlays in that stock. That rear sight is just awesome! Looks like quite the project brother. Looking forward to your progress. Hope you're having a great Sunday!

Thanks man! Yea the stock needs some fitting and finessing. I think I’m gonna do a traditional oil type coat. Evan send me a recipe he uses for such things, and I’m gonna give it a try. The forend is a tad longer than needed, so I’ll cut it off to test on. Just need to figure out what bottom metal and front sight to do

ive got one that is alot like this, its an action up custom with a 26 in med heavy barrel. it was most likely done up in the 30s wen actions wer available to gun smiths. if i wanted the same work today it would cost a small fortune! just the stock alone would be alot of dough. ive got a Japanese t38 action and barrel i might make a project out of someday.

VERY COOL project. I am also looking at a similar sporterization project with a Remington Model 30s action. I guess they came from the factory with either the Lyman 48 or a Redfield 102 micrometer sight.

I had a Timney sportsman trigger I bought 20 years ago at gander mountain for $29 on a close out. It was awesome trigger. I bought the gun a few years back from buddy and the only thing I had to do was buy another W stamped stock and remove the trigger along with installing all the original parts. Did the opposite your doing. Did what you did with a 1903 Springfield decades back. Also bought another $29 Timney for it at the same time. Both guns shot .5” at 100 yards. My 1917 will shoot that and better with handloads and open sights at 100 yards back in its stock configuration.

I just got an M1917 from the CMP. Of course it is in original configuration, and it will stay that way. It will go with my 2 M1 Garands, M1903A3, M1 Carbine, and WWII vintage M1911A1.

FYI...Birchwood Casey Plum Brown barrel finish also works for rust bluing rifle parts. Heat it, cover with solution and boil in rain or distilled water. Turns a nice dark black. I'm using git on a Win 95 I am working on. Also, BLO with Alkanet root powder makes for nice blood colored red oil. Looks great on walnut. Great video...thanks.

Theyre a bit large and heavy but the 1917 is an outstanding rifle. About as good as it gets.

I just bought one in what i believe is 3006. It is amazing condition. But no markings hardly except a stamp that looks like a magnifying glass and a pitchfork. If your familiar I'd love to get info and send pictures. It came from a close family friend so it's important to me.

That sounds interesting. It’s not a Winchester proof mark is it? The had a round circle with a P and a W connected inside.

I’m working on it. Once I get the tank built that’s big enough to boil this thing, I’ll do an update and show the rust blue process as I do it.

@greybone777 Жыл бұрын
Most of these are hiding in grandparents closets. Most of these like the Springfield and krags were ruined years ago by sporterizing them but they are great actions.
@j_c_hunt Жыл бұрын
That’s why I’m doing my best to bring this back to life as a close to a model 30 as I can, since the rear sight horns have been machined off to a model 30 profile. I wouldn’t Sporter one in todays time, but back in those year I get why they did. Get a surplus rifle cheap, that has a strong action, and plenty of surplus small parts around. They made great hunting rifles on a budget for all those folks back then.

I've got a Rem Mod 30 if you need screw location information for the peep, although the sight needs to set top dead center.

Since this video, I’ve got the screw location drilled and tapped. I appreciate the offer!
