I took the plunge and did this cut. As soon as I got done, I started crying! I have RARELY had a good experience with a professional cut and haven't been to a salon in almost 10 years. I have never cut my hair myself other than trimming my bangs. I had tons of dead hair on the ends and I cut off quite a bit! (4-6 inches in some places.) My hair was really long, but not pretty. The end result of changing how i care for and style my hair and then doing this cut was totally transforming! My hair now frames my face beautifully and my hair is curling so nicely without all that dead weight at the bottom. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm over 50 years old and have never loved my hair as much as I do right at this moment.

Great video and easy to follow.just waiting on it drying to see the results as I wet it afterwards to get my curl definition back. If it’s not completely how it needs to be I will do it again wet. Fingers crossed but may need to put the pigtails in a little higher.great video❤️👌

This may come across as a weird comment and if so, I apologize. I was raised in an 'inadequate' environment which is the nicest way to put it. I just turned 50 and always straightened my hair because no one else in my family had curly hair except for my father. No one was ever able to teach me how to take care of my hair so i always hated my hair and it really made me feel bad about how I looked. I'm getting ready to go on a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine so I knew I had to learn how to take care of my curly locks so on a KZbin search I found your videos. You are so patient and nurturing and I've learned to love and embrace my curls, not hide them and i wanted to thank you.

Really enjoy your tutorials. I have done this cut to my hair twice now. The first time was super petrified so I only cut a teeny tiny snippet off. This time, I cut about almost an inch off for my layers, and cleaned up my ends. This is so much better than the unicorn cut, which I have done before, will never do again lol. When she says mullet, that is what I had to deal with the last time I did the unicorn cut, and it took six months for my hair to grow back. This cut is perfect for my 2c to 3a curls. I keep my hair just longer than my shoulders, so this works great for me. Thanks

Hey Mell, I just want to thank you so much for changing the way I see my curly hair. Because of you I have learned to love and properly take care of my hair after a total bleach disaster. I love your chanel and the way you explain things like no other youtuber, in my opinion, has done. I was wondering if it's possible for you to address how to properly plop in one of your videos. I noticed you rarely plop but is this something that one should do after or before applying a gel? I'm always on go so ploping for me is a must to reduce dry time. Again thank you for being you and being in my opinion indispensable to the curly hair community. Also happy Birthday 🎂
@Stacyahmad994 жыл бұрын
A plopping video would be great. I plop for about 30 mins afterwards. Trick is to add a little extra gel to your hair after plopping to make up for the products lost in the t-shirt. Works like a charm.
@GiuliaLazzeri4 жыл бұрын
I don't know your texture and your porosity, but you can give a try to every type of plopping! I have 2c-3a fine curly hair and I think I have low porosity and for me works best using a very little amount of cream distributed on my hair, microplopping with a cotton t-shirt and then "close" the hair with a gel. You can give it a try and see what happens! :)

I'm not really afraid of cutting my hair, no fear of losing length or things like that. But I am terrified of hairstylists that know very little about curly hair giving my hair a weird shape/cut that I don't know how to fix. I live in a place where curly hair is really not desired and is generally straightened. So I've been sitting with these dead ends on my hair (the last cut was nearly two years ago!), and then I stumbled upon your video. When I say this cut SAVED my hair, it's no exaggeration! My hair feels light and bouncy... Also, this is (HANDS DOWN) my favorite haircut that I've ever received! And you (and I!) did that! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!!

I am in the same boat with Teresa (below). I moved back to Cali four years ago and as a result, lost a terrific stylist. I wasn't in a hurry to find a new one since many people don't truly know how to cut and style curly hair (even though they think/say they do). Now it also seems like no one in my area has availability. So I've basically just been doing bare minimum with my own trim from time to time, and almost completely neglecting any deep or regular conditioning regimen. So yes, my hair is a hot and sad mess, and after seeing this video, I'm feeling up to the challenge of the DIY cut! Mell, you really do make it look so easy. Thank you so much for sharing your tips and insight about doing it yourself. I can't wait to get started and see what sort of curl revival I can muster from my drab, lifeless mop. Wish me luck! :)

My question is... After your hair is dry and you see the "weird curls" sticking out, hanging longer than the rest, You cut them off. But how do you know those same pieces of hair will do that next wash? I hope that makes sense.

You don't know. For me, my curl pattern changes daily, so that's why I'm always hesitant to get haircuts. Typically, a persons hair is not just 1 type ( e.g. 3b ) but 2 or more ( e.g. 2c-3a ) and that makes curly haircuts so hard. But I doubt cutting a wee bit like she did would affect you hair much; I would caution with cutting anything past 2 inches though since you could notice that.

So I've now tried both the cut you taught Amanda to do, and this cut, and while both work, this one is by far the best, even though I don't have the tight curl pattern Mel does. This just results in a much more pleasing rounded, all-over trim in just a few snips. I have very thick hair, so have to do a few passes over the ends of the pigtails to make sure I've got everything even, but the whole process still only took fifteen minutes, and still looks better than most haircuts I get at the salon.

Okay, so my hair is 2b to 2c on a good day, medium to high density, but also finely textured. I love accentuating the curl, but my hair tends to weigh itself down and I get triangular. I did the wolf cut at the start of the Plague Years, and it looked mullet-esque but okay on a good day. I know my waves are not as strong as your curls, but I gave it a go today anyway based on your fine texture, and it’s lovely! Hairdressers who don’t handle much fine-textured hair are always surprised at how different my hair looks wet than dry, lol. I like having a lot of movement and volume in my meagre puff, and proper layers have always done that for me. I could never do it right at home. This cut ended up super flattering and the right kind of round for my face. Simple, and my ends are happy! Thanks!
