I've often thought about production goods. Just look at your average pencil... One company makes the pencil lead (graphite), another makes the wooden sheath, another makes the paint and ink, one makes the metal banding, and one more makes the eraser. Those are all shipped to a factory that assembles them into a pencil. That's a lot just to make a simple pencil. Now imagine what it takes to make something complicated like a phone, with its thousands of parts, some of which are very complicated to make. And before there were factories, a single person would be expected to make all of those bits and put it all together, so construction of something as simple as a pencil could take a lot more time than it does now.

I never gave any consideration to the work and craftsmanship that went into arts & crafts products. At least, not until I tried doing such things myself. Now I can understand and appreciate that whenever I come across such things, and I'm happy that that my eyes have been opened to it. Whenever I encounter a well-crafted piece that some has spent time and effort to produce (and perhaps blood, sweat, and tears, too), my heart warms at seeing it.
