I knew what "Johnny sang about a thing called love" meant but thought Ray and Philomena were just regulars in the pub who sang when drunk!. Now I know what Shane meant. God rest his soul.

This is the first time I have seen Philomena Begley, though I knew her songs. No disrespect intended, but I had a white faced cow in 1976 called Philomena, after Philomena Begley. At milking time she stood by the door in the lower house and I remember them now: Scutty, Grundy, Blue One by the Wall, Dotty Dotes, Palomino and so on. 46 years on and I still remember them with affection.

Where did the name Palomino come from?

@@pmacc3557 she had an unusual colour and palomino is the colour of a horse. When we bought her at a fair, our photo was put in the Farmers Journal, because of that, we kept her, even though she never produced much milk. Her photo in the Farmers Journal brought glamour us and the cow shed.

@@connoroleary591 great story. I love cows. Iv trained my kids out here in mainland Europe that each time we pas fields with cows we always let window down and call them; Sucksies Sucksies😃 I assume the blue cow by the wall got that name due to her penchant for.... standing by the wall?😊

My sister and I spent a lot of time deciphering Pogues lyrics(without the help of Dr Google)back in the olden days. Finally I know what Shane meant by "Ray and Philomena sang of my elusive dreams". Thank you.

Brilliant performance. Ray is so economical, he sounds like he's doing almost nothing but he's hitting every note perfectly and interpreting the lyric in a very low key manner which is what the song demands. Philomena provides the perfect complementary dynamic. The fiddle player is sensational.

“I looked at him, he looked at me, all I could do was hate him. While Ray and Philomena sang of My Elusive Dream… “ I’ve always wondered about that lyric and what song it was. Now I know:) Great channel, thanks👍

Those of us from the 70s knew who Shane McGowan was referring to . I always wonder where he heard them . Maybe on his visits to Ireland or in a maudlin Irish pub jukebox in London. They were top country stars in Ireland in that decade in any case and did the circuits of noisy boozy cabaret venues and teetotal dance halls . She does a poignant turn in the 2016 RTE Easter Rising commemoration evoking the lost generations of emigrants to Britain.

The clothing is very off putting. Especially on Ray Lynam. This is probably my least favourite music (and I don't mean country music) this (country duet saccharine love songs) and reggae.

Daft comment, it was the 70s, everyone dressed like that. Perhaps Ray should have said “ I’m not wearing that it might put off Finola in 50 years time”.

@@kieronsmyth "everyone dressed like that"😂 well maybe you did Kieron but my mates and I certainly didn't. Have to agree with Finola. Ridiculous to watch someone from Moate and Pomeroy pretending to be American country singers.
