Ye because the piston rings over heat and over expand creating a better seal and thous higher compression but then they obliterate from the excess heat and friction lol. Steve could try putting a tea spoon of engine oil down into the suspect cylinder to see if it helps compression, if it does it means it's your rings, but if not it is the valves (could be from valve float). Either way there is enough second hand engine parts floating around on Ebay you could just hone the damaged cylinder wall depending of severity and then replace the piston rings. If it is a valve just replace it and then lap the valve.

There are plenty ST's running low 300 BHP dedicated for track use with stock bottom end and head... Something just gave and that's unlucky. Near me there is a dude with a 320BHP ST with gutted interior that he tracks atleast twice a month and the only mod he did to the internals is a pumaspeed block mod to prevent the ovaling of the cylinder bores and head gasket failure. Only real issue he had in 3 years of the car being stage3 is a broken 4th gear
