A British classic is “You Rang, M'Lord?” that still has a cultic status and a large fan base in Hungary (the outstanding work of dubbing actors helped a lot). Its setting is after the ‘Great War’ and a lot of the comedy is rooted in the eroding social system and stereotypes of lords, ladies and various servants of different levels.

Black Adder is the best. Hilarious. 🌠🌠🌠🌠🌠highbrow is a new word for me.

I remember one cable channel used to run "The League.." 24/7 for about a year. Ever since then I can't ask "Are you local?" in a normal human way 😅

Watching it 24/7 would be overdoing it slightly. 😂

I agree with you, regarding Black Adder being rather intellectual, in many respects. However, I do think there's enough 'other stuff' to keep anyone amused. Along with Fawlty Towers, probably my favourite. You should watch it again.

We often used to watch clips of Black Adder in history lessons at school. It worked well, I still remember a lot about the Puritans!

I strongly recommend “The Thick of It”, based on which the Veep was written. Other ones that I’ve partly watched - “Love thy neighbour”, “Still Game”, Chewin the fat, Two Ronnies and Fresh Fields 😊 Also, I’ve come across clips of Life’s too short (look up - Dwarf on pole 😅) and Office, but watched neither yet.

Thank you for sharing your favourite shows. Comedy is a great way of getting into another language. It was a pleasure to hear from you about series I enjoy too, and also to learn about a couple I hadn't heard of before (The League of Gentlemen and Harry & Paul). By the way, when they started airing Blackadder here in Bulgaria in the 90s (it was dubbed), the next morning, after an episode, everyone in elementary school was abuzz, laughing our heads off, repeating the Bulgarian translations of the jokes 😀 It was before they started airing Mr Bean, so it was a genuine love at first sight. I've watched it a few more times since then and I always find something new.

Dear Jade, thank You very much for 'The League of Gentlemen' as well as 'Harry & Paul'! I didn't know about those and according to your description I like them already. 'Black Adder' is far above my powers of comprehension but I compensate by watching 'Thin Blue Line' which is not so "hoity-toity". 😋I also adore the performance of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie in 'Jeeves and Wooster' (some listening workout!), available right here on YT. Do I need to mention 'Yes /prime/ minister'?

Fawlty Towers with Basil's impeccable command of the English language and the other characters (the Colonel's, Sybil's etc); compared to Manuel's.

For me as an Montenegrin it's : 1. "OFAH - Only fools and horses" 2. "Black adder" 3. "Monty Python's flying circus" 4. "Mr. Bean" 5. "Alo, alo" 6. All the rest. I got OFAH and Monty Pyton complete series on DVDs that i bought sometime in the 2000s in a shop that's been long closed. All my DVDs as well as music CDs, magazines, comic books, even my library and other physical media are in my basement now... I mostly use Netflix for movies and tv shows now. And digital cable tv and an app on my smart tv for watching live sports. And mostly play video games on my PC anyways.

Hello Jade.That is unbeliveable but not longer than two weeks ago when i was watching one of your relaxed english videos i said to myself how nice would it be to see a video of your favorite english comedies And now it is.As if i made an order for specific video and you created it in response.Amazing. Thank you for everything you do teacher Jade.I have discovered you few weeks ago and since then i watch a lot of your materials.And that help improve my english, helping sort out english english from american english that i know from school and/or movies. The english comedy i know myself and can recommend to you and others is "Death at a funeral"(original, english version of course.Because there is also american version that is not funny at all) It is by far the only english comedy i saw and i love it. It is a story of Simon who was invited to a funeral of his fiances uncle.Simon is very scared of that event because there he supose to meet with his fiance-Martha-father who seems to hate him so much for hanging with his daughter. As they come by to pick Marthas brother to the funeral who is studying to be the farmacist, Martha is giving Simon a pill of what she believed was Valium.To calm down Stressed Simon.Little did she knew the pill she gave him wasnt valium at all.It was a halucynogenic pill similar to LSD.These were produced by Marthas brother who was trying to hide them in an empty bottle of valium pills. Poor Simon is having a funeral of his nightmares and there is where the whole comedy goes. Absolutely amazing film😊

True i think the lack of love in the real world and suffering is insulted by the amount of thought and effort into the pretend. Even if its funny. Our current situation is that these programmes had a chance to teach or help the society but things have got worse. True we have always had the muses.. but musing is not making real life better😢

I love the David Bowie song in Extras about the Ricky Gervais character called something like 'Chubby Little Loser' - the cruel lyrics are by Gervais but the song itself is rather beautiful.

Some Russian guy here, no diplomas. Blackadder is a simple show for the masses. No sophisti-humour here. The jokes and situations are straightforward and don’t need context. You can follow along without an Eton or Oxford. And you'll pick up on moments in English history likely etched in every UK schoolchild's memory, like the Spanish Armada, some kings and queens, etc. By contrast, Harry and Paul, aside from Loadsamoney, actually require some background knowledge to fully appreciate them. Thanks for the recommendations and the reminder: I was struck by Monty Python and have seen a lot of their solo work. But somehow always skipped over Basil Fawlty. I'll give him a shot. Any recommendations for modern sketch shows in 2024? Something along the lines of Mitchell & Webb or Fry & Laurie classics?
@JadeJoddleАй бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Just wondering if you watched Black Adder in English or whether it was dubbed? My point of view is that the show was not made for the English masses, so it’s interesting how we draw different conclusions.
@JadeJoddleАй бұрын
I’m out of date with anything modern.

Here are some brilliant sketch shows from the 2000s and 2010s: Jam (very dark in parts), Bruiser, Big Train, Cardinal Burns, Cowards (only three episodes ever made). As a Mitchell & Webb fan, you'll enjoy Bruiser as it features some of the same people🙂
@alex47a659Ай бұрын
@@JadeJoddle The dubbed version was first, and years later in English. My family has been working class for generations, with a few lower middle class exceptions, if Russian strata can be translated into the English class system. So I'm generalizing based on myself. In terms of '80s comedies, I'd be equally entertained to watch Blackadder and The Benny Hill Show of that period. For me, they operate on the same principles of humor. Also, Rowan Atkinson simplified a lot from his previous works for this show and paved the way for Mr. Bean. But, for instance, The Young Ones and Yes, Prime Minister will bore me a bit. These two are essentially the same type of show too, just aimed at different audiences.
