One of the best Christmas films that you didn't mention at all and is in the Criterion Collection is FANNY & ALEXANDER. I assume you don't have the film yet and are unaware of its Christmas impact. Of course, being a Bergman film, it is not your typical Christmas film. Although, the first part which does take place during Christmas is one of the most beautiful Christmas scenes ever filmed. No Hollywood comes close in presenting the delight of Christmas as Bergman presents here. But all is not as cheery and bright as the film progresses, but still an amazing film.

I love Love Actually one of my favourite films period. But maybe that’s the Brit in me. You didn’t mention Carol in this video by Todd Haynes it’s an amazing romantic film set around Christmas

Great video & an excellent collection...I'd recommend adding chapters that show the title for each one. And I'd love to know how you'd rank these. Ranking can be tough, but it's so helpful. I was never really down for watching old movies, but I'm slowly becoming more open to it, so I'm always interested when reviewers rank their ultimate favorites.

I got a copy of the latest Second Sight Films release of George Romero’s “Martin” as a present for my brother. He’s a huge fan of the film, but has only been able to watch it with the usual gross KZbin rips. Felt very nice to provide something 4K with a commentary by Romero and Tom Savini.

Interesting, I haven’t heard of that. I’ll have to look into it. What do you think of Second Sight? I haven’t explored that label yet.

Just stumbling upon this video, the Remember The Night release from Indicator, did they put out a region free version? I was just on their website and the only one I can find is the region B one (but I did just pick up Cash On Demand from them, thanks for the rec!). Two obscure ones that I've always loved since I was a kid (and the only reason I found them was because my Dad would set up the VCR and record all day on Saturdays in December, when they would play all of the obscure animated ones) are A Garfield Christmas Special (I shed a tear every time when the grandma is talking about the grandpa) and A Wish For Wings That Work (I think it's based on a book and comic strip, not sure if they ever made any other animated specials but man this one is good -- love the animation style and humor).

I can only watch one or maybe 2 Christmas movies each year it's amazing you have 50 of them, but I didn't know there were so many of them, so I have a bunch to check out still haven't seen Jingle all the way yet but next year I will check that out
@FilmsByColor11 ай бұрын
Let me know what you think of Jingle All the Way. I think it’s one you kinda have to grow up with. I’ve never met anyone who loves it that watched it first as an adult.
@JefferyEPetrone11 ай бұрын
Exciting to see you go through these movies. There are indeed many lovely Christmas movies.
@FilmsByColor11 ай бұрын
There really are. I just watched Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence last night. Incredible movie!
Oh, snap! You didn't grow up with the Grinch Who Stole Christmas? That's so cool you got to experience a classic as adult along with through the eyes of your kids. I haven't seen enough Boris Karloff to rank him, but he's an actor I have a similar wholesome fondness for like Jimmy Stewart...who is the greatest of all time from my uncultured swine perspective. And speaking of which.... I have to look into A Shop Around the Corner and My Night at Maud's if they're in your top 3 along with It's a Wonderful Life, which, even when Jingle All the Way was my all time favorite movie where that was like you said, I wouldn't consider it among the greats, but I nominated, and still do nominate, It's a Wonderful Life for not only greatest Christmas movie that I've seen, but the greatest movie of all time, and I have a list, and checked it twice! Thank you for bringing up Miracle on 34th Street, Meet Me in St. Louis, and Christmas in Connecticut since I haven't seen them since I was a kid, and didn't remember if they were worthy of putting them up there. People brought up Muppets Christmas Carol, and from a fuzzy childhood memory, I thought that was worthy so I put in on, but did you think it's worthy? Especially since you mentioned A Christmas Carol (1951) with Alastair Sim, which I'm not sure I've seen that one. A previous possible Christmas movie I had on my greatest of all time list but then removed it after a conversation with a LOTR fan who complained about the action saying it was the worst one 8/10, which I didn't have a problem with it, but for now, I knocked it down to a 9/10 still thinking it's by far the greatest of the trilogy thanks to the pacing, is The Fellowship of the Ring where our self-sacrificial loving heroes departed from Rivendell on December 25th to save the world. And speaking of other debatable holiday classification movies....What's This? You saw it! I'm glad you thought Nightmare Before Christmas was really good since, upon childhood memory, I thought it was about a 6/10 similar to another Tim Burton movie Edward Scissorhands that I thought started off well but then lost steam at the end (the only Tim Burton movie I thought was really good was Ed Wood; I didn't think so highly of him back then); however, my enthusiasm for...well, at least my enthusiasm for my childhood memory of it didn't loose steam, or at least for the music since it's the first album I picked up when I stopping using subscription music and turned to physical media, and I didn't even realized that for years, every single year, I've been listening to songs from that movie starting in September coincidentally being around Halloween. I heard songs as a little kid before seeing it, and I think I'd sing "Jack's Lament" from heart, and I started singing "Jack's Obsession" out loud literally right now while writing this. haha I like Hark the Harold Angels Sing, in part thanks to being reminded of it by the Charlie Brown Christmas, but "What's This?" from Nightmare Before Christmas might possibly be my all time favorite song, and haha you had a really nice take on where it should be classified, but, if you had to choose, is it a Christmas or Halloween movie? From memory, it had a theme of humility/knowing our lane/gratitude and happiness for our gifts and gifts of others where Jack Skellington being the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town with the darker imagery reflecting the darker aspects of this world with death which focuses on preparing ourselves toward judgment for hopefully sainthood, and I remembered Jack being more of an anti-hero so he's got a lot of humble work to do where I think Christmastown could have been a metaphor for more saintly models for inspiration, and that's where I was leaning toward Halloween overall. And regarding the Christmas Story....see, that one I thought was a 9/10 amazing vignette distillation of the commercial aspect of Christmas....but I didn't like it either as a kid. I'd have to be like you and see it through the eyes of others to enjoy it because I think it deserves its praise but wasn't for me. Home Alone... I think you previously said the third used to be your favorite, and it was mine as a little kid, but I rewatched the first two this year, and the first Home Alone is now in my all time favorite movies, but the sequel, the scene with Kevin's mom thinking so highly of him...ughh, tearing at my heart, man....She's in my pick for greatest fictional mothers. I gotta go...Thanks again! Hope you, Grace, and the rest of the family have a wonderful Christmas time and New Year! This was fantastic, DJ!
@kevinhouse437611 ай бұрын
Thanks for doing another great video, DJ! I highly recommend you add "Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol" to your collection. It was the first animated Christmas special made for television back in 1962, and it's a highly regarded adaptation with a fantastic score. And forgive me, but just once more I'm going to put in a plug for 1952's "The Holly and the Ivy," a beautiful little film available through Kino Lorber. I'm really glad you love "The Snowman." The animation style and haunting music really sets a special tone. Don't rush to see "Santa Claus: The Movie." I was so disappointed in that film upon seeing it in the theater, and I really was looking forward to it because I've always loved the character actor David Huddleston (Santa Claus in the film). A couple of additional films I enjoy that you didn't mention are "While You Were Sleeping" and "The Family Stone." The latter actually features a scene from "Meet Me in St. Louis," my all-time favorite movie. I hope you, Grace and your kids enjoy the rest of the holiday season.

The Holly and the Ivy was on my watchlist this year, but I didn’t have a way to watch it. John was going to let me borrow his copy, but we got busy and weren’t able to get together unfortunately. I have seen While You Were Sleeping and the Family Stone, and I think we might even have those around here on dvd somewhere. Those are two of Grace’s favorites that she showed me when we were dating. Hopefully I can get to The Holly and the Ivy next year!

Sorry, I'm new to subscribing to you so just found this video. I agree re Its a Wonderful Life and The Shop Around the Corner. They are two of my fave Xmas movies and all-time favourite movies. "Shop" is less well-known here in the UK, so I have tried to educate friends over many yrs. Some of my additional, as I agree re some of yours, fave Xmas titles are as follows: The Amazing Mr Blunden Beyond Tomorrow Black Christmas The Box of Delights The Christmas Chronicles (Netflix, but I have on dvd) Ghost Stories for Christmas (BBC) Merry Christmas (Joyeux Noel) Home for the Holidays A Christmas Tale (Spanish horror, one of my fave films. Find it on 3 disc dvd R1 set called "Six Films to Keep You Awake) Thx. You've given me some to look into. Merry Xmas 24 when it comes.

I can't help but noticing that your collection is lacking the greatest Christmas special of all time, which is the He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special. (I'm a big Masters of the Universe fan, so my opinion is likely biased.). I like Fred Claus a lot, too. It's an underrated film that has strong acting. I love Jim Varney and his Ernest character. I think that Deck the Halls is overrhated. I'm not saying that it's great, but I think that it's amusing enough. The Santa Clause 3 is actually my favorite of the trilogy, because of how much I like Martin Short as Jack Frost.
