I was diagnosed with Esophageal cancer. This video was created to give my experiences with this cancer and the treatment process. My hope is that this video will benefit anyone going through this type of cancer or for those that are helping support someone who has this type of cancer

Hi I'm 73 now, back in 2009 I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and I went through most of what Jon has been through. After many tests and lots of chemo my oesophagus was removed in early 2010. It has slowed me down somewhat but I still do most of that I want to do. So if you think you have a problem swallowing then DO NOT WASTE TIME, get it checked out. I wish you all the very best.

I had stage 3 esophogeal cancer in 2011, I did chemo and radiation and esophogus removal. I am cancer free and healthy and I workout 5 times a week. I thank MDAnderson and Dr. Walsh for saving my life. The first year was a struggle but I did it and so can you, never lose hope.

It is serious I'm not going to lie, however the chemo stage will be very telling. I had 8 weeks of chemo and my tumor shrunk 70% this is a good sign. By the time I finished radiation I was tumor free but opted for surgery as well. We should talk again email me at delynnpotter46@gmail.com I can give you the shot as saving her life but you be prepared for anything.

Hey everybody, this is Jon. I am SO very sorry I haven’t provided any kind of update since I posted this video. So here’s the kinda short version. :) I have regular treatments still (see treatment update below). My life is almost back to normal, but I am not officially cancer free (explanation below). But I’m still working a normal schedule, still playing with the band, and still have my hair. ;) My family is doing well and have adjusted to my ongoing treatment schedule. I am pretty thankful for where we are now. ABOUT SURGERY I did not opt for the surgery to remove the cancer from my esophagus (esophagectomy) and effected lymph nodes because it was too dangerous to get to the lymph node in my collar bone AND because I couldn’t bring myself to do it because of the stories and videos of the struggles. MY CONTINUING TREATMENT Because I chose not to ** Every 3 weeks I go to the treatment center for an infusion of Herceptin (30 minute drip). I arrive, the medical staff takes me back, gets my vitals, accesses my port, and draws blood. Then the lab runs a series of tests and then I see my Oncologist after they review my blood test results. ** After my infusion of Herceptin, I pick up a prescription of 35 pills called Capecitabine (Xeloda). And for the next 7 days I take 5 pills a day (3 in the morning, 2 in the evening. The treatment never makes me sick (I feel very normal and no lack of energy).

Its sounds like your on the road to recovery. I was truely touched by your testimony. I admire your bravery in describing the journey you have been through. Thank you! for sharing. As I listened, there were so many similarities in my journey as well. same age, when diagnosed , same treament plan (same fanny pack, but for 5 days straight, for 4 mos).Only thing is im a female in a male dominated disease. And surgery was not an option for meas well. My tumor was located near my vocal cords, upper 3rds. After 40 radiation treatments, chemo and dialations ending in Oct 2016, im officially in remission. However, my swallowing improved only to the point where i have to blend or puree all my foods. Im not out of the 5 year danger zone until 2021. Just trying to live my life as normal as possible; workout, eat right, sleep, enjoy life, and count all my positives. again, thank you for sharing your story, I will continue to think of you in my prayers. Knowing im not alone in this is comforting, Keep fighting everyone stay strong! treasure every momment, Love Life, and it will Love you back✌

GhostTownBand2008 , wish you a very speedy recovery and lots of prayers for you and family. i am 33 years old female, having pain in the leftside of chest/ throat area while i swallow food. It feels like lot of pressure towards my heart while swallowing. I had gerd for over 10 years. I never had heart burn but i am constantly feeling like i need to clear my throat and hoarseness in my voice. My doctor send me home with proton pump inhibitors treatment for 2 months. I have started taking medicine but still feeling the same way when I swallow. Did u had any of the symptoms? I am very scared right now. My doctor doesn’t want to do endoscopy. I am afraid that waiting longer will not be good if i have cancer. But right now I don’t know. I am not able to understand that without doing any scan/ endoscopy, we will not know. 6 months ago also i went to my doctor for acid reflux, headache and cough feeling in my throat but they said it’s allergies. I hope it’s not too late to get proper diagnosis. We would like to know how r u doing? Please reply. Thank you

I had esophageal cancer in 2000. The first surgery failed and I ended up with multiple pneunomia and had several operations to save my life. I lost my stomach and what was left of the esophagus. I could not eat, drink, talk and move. I was airlifted to St. Louis U hospital. They restored me to health and eventually made me a new esophagus with my own body parts. I spent 8 months in the hospital. I did not need chemo nor radiation nor any meds. Now it is almost 2020. I had no symptons and cancer was found by routine exam. If you have any problems or suspicions get help. Wonders happen every day.

God bless you. I was diagnosed with Stage 2 Esophageal cancer in August of 2014. I had a thumb sized tumor where my esophagus connects to my stomach. I had chemo and radiation until December of 2014. Then in March of 2015 I went through an 8 hour surgery to repair my esophagus and stomach, which were worn out from all the years of trying to work. I had been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia back in 1980 when I was 12 years old. We chose at that time not to have surgery because of having to go back every once in a while to have my stomach dilated. My stomach is about the size of a half dollar or alittle bigger. I had the chest port and a feeding tube for months. I am happy to report that I have been cancer free since March of 2015. But, I still suffer from fatigue. On top of the cancer I started going through Menopause. I take potassium for the fatigue and various medications for anxiety and depression. I still follow up with my family doctor and my oncologist. My family doctor tells his student doctors that I’m his walking miracle. The only thing that truly bothers me is that I have to watch how much and when I eat because I suffer from my food backing up and going into my lungs.

My 36 year old son just had an esophagectomy done in May. It was an 8 hour surgery where they also removed 28 lymph nodes. He is having a really hard time emotionally, physically and psychologically. I am heartbroken for him. He is so young as you were when diagnosed and didn't meet any of the criteria of the usual patient with esophageal cancer, with the exception that he has been suffering with acid reflux for years. He has never been overweight, doesn't drink and doesn't smoke and lives a very healthy and active lifestyle. Now he is continually fatigued and breaks down easily. He has a girlfriend but has never been married and does not have children. He is my youngest child of 5 children and his siblings have been very supportive. I don't typically respond to youtube posts but my father was diagnosed with esophageal cancer on November 25, 2015 (two days before my birthday). Surgery is not an option. They have decided to commence chemo and radiation therapy. If there is a silver lining here we were advised it is stage 2 (b) and localized. Initial reports suggest lymph nodes have not been affected and no signs of spreading. Has a heart attack patient 8 years ago (double by-pass) they are taking all factors in to consideration. I appreciate your candid sharing of your experience. Thank you.

I had my hiatus hernia fixed. It's called a nissan fundoplication procedure. Some people have problems swallowing afterwards, so be sure to find a good surgeon if you opt for surgery. I don't take any PPI's anymore. Taking these drugs long term have side effects like dementia and not taking anything increases the risk for cancer. Good luck to you.

Bob Emmet I heard of a treatment for barrett's where they freeze off the spots and the tissue that grows back is healthy and normal. I don't remember what it's called but maybe you might want to look into it.

Thank you for this video. Would you please give us an update about how are you doing? God bless your heart for putting this video out. My fiancé has esophageal cancer and I’m trying to find out more about it. Even with in weeks of chemo and radiation he still not able to eat and I’m very concerned.
