This is a phenomenal performance. This is what I heard in my head all the times I conducted it during my 39 years in church music. Finding this was a great comfort to my soul. What a strong and loving testament to your dear father.

I want this sung at my funeral! It just takes me right to the throne of Almighty God. I know that our praise to God will be even more when we get to see Him, but so far, this is the most beautiful music I've ever heard. I know He hears this praise!!!

This is the best sounding group I can find performing this piece. And, forgive me, it's because of the basses. They are so solid and have so much resonance and color.... that gives the foundation that supports the rest of the choir. Super, super.

I ran into this by accident and how beautiful this is. My mother loved singing it in church choir (maybe 30 ppl) so I chose it for her memorial service recently. I didn't have SATB but I had an MP3 from the men's choir my senior year (1971). I put the words in the bulletin for those unfamiliar with this piece. There wasn't a dry eye in the house. In my opinion, this is the heart of the Gospel. We love Him because he FIRST loved us!

Stan... this is the first I had heard of your father's passing. I was a student at West Texas State in the early 1970's and once sang a duet with him in DuBois' Seven last Words of Christ. As a student, I was a nervous wreck. He was so gracious. This anthem was one we sang as part of our church's touring choir program for several years. Very memorable. All my best to you and your family, as I will always have fond memories of your father.

This is the best sounding performance of this piece I can find on youtube. Well done! My choir is practicing this now and I /love/ it.

What a wonderful, God honoring rendition. I'm guessing the choir not only was from the church but additionally past students of Dr. Sanders because this is truly a powerful performance.

Thank you Fran for your kind words. If you search "Hugh Sanders" you can see/hear some other great pieces from his funeral.

I notice from the file name that the funeral was one week before that ill-fated tragedy. Stan, you had been through a lot in those few weeks since your father’s passing. I pray you and your family are doing well.

Stan, this is by far the best arrangement of this great hymn I've been privileged to hear. Did your father arrange this?

The rest of the lyrics.... Why, then why, O blessed Jesus Christ, should I not love thee well? Not for the hope of winning heaven, nor of escaping hell. Not with the hope of gaining aught, not seeking a reward, but as thyself hast loved me, O everlasting Lord. E’en so I love thee, and will love, and in thy praise will sing; because thou art my God and my eternal King.

Who is the excellent organist backing up the choir and what type of pipe organ are they playing??
@llornit3 жыл бұрын
On organ was the brilliant Mark Walker of www.louisvillemasterchorale.org/artistic-leadership

Jane would - I feel confidently - disagree. The score calls for far more dynamic difference. Yet, it was the far better presentation at this service of remembrance.

Pretty good performance, but you won't hear a better one than the Hour of Power choir with the most awesome pipe organ I've ever heard. The organist here sure didn't do this song justice. He should have ended with a resounding chorus of the 32' pedals. That would have been a much more awesome ending.

My first exposure to this wonderful anthem was the "Hour of Power" version. I agree that the HOP version is very powerful and is my favorite, especially that organ. I will disagree regarding this organist who I felt did the piece just as much justice. His/her settings were very much like the Crystal Cathedral organ settings with the exception of that powerful ending. SIDE NOTE...It was only later that I learned that there was a lot of editing of the lyrics done by the staff at the HOP Crystal Cathedral which is a problem for many purists who compare it with this (the original, unedited version). "How dare they sing 'thou' and 'thy' instead of 'you' and your' ?" LOL There are some other lyrics alterations which, to me, make the message more easily understood.
