this is why I started sketching in fountain pen rather than pencil. I just feel more confident and expressive with it. I do a lot of cafe sketches and I love doing it, it's so fun.

Yes, I totally agree!!! I thought I’d make more mistakes and have more bad pieces by sketching in pen, but I think it’s the fact that there’s no going back that gives me the freedom to just go for it. Glad you’re having fun doing this, too! Do you also intentionally do it as a form of relaxation or is it something you do because you want to practice your art?

Hmm. I like the idea of wearing my brushes and pens. Pockets are a bonus in artistic liberation. I have four tiny paintboxes with between 7 and 18 colours, and I love the sennelier five tube set. (The Chinese orange and paynes grey work crazily well with each other.)The thing that holds me up is choosing between them! A platinum Carbon pen would make a great hair ornament in a bun. Nice sketch book, fun results. Thank you.

If you’re going to wear your pens, just make sure they’re not structurally necessary for your updo! Since I wear a flower in my hair all the time, I can easily slip them under the clip, of it I’m wearing a ponytail I’ll just put it at the base of the elastic. I used to have so many brushes and pens and things in my hair that I would use them as, essentially, hair sticks and as a piece would progress and I’d move things from my hair to my hand....well.....id then be dealing with the sudden and inevitable interference of my locks. My hair used to be past my butt, so it was truly invasive. =>..

I love both your pallettes, honestly, although your very minimalistic one is the option that would be best in the end, I love little trinkets and opening up something like your first travel case and be greeted by goodies :D Now, I'm learning the hard way that having a big metal pallette (24 ½ pans or 12 whole pans, which are holding my white nights kit) weights down on my small backpack... Oops. But just now I got a sennelier test pack and I set up a tiny metal box like yours! ("I feel like Kat filling up the test pack on the pans and arranging them on the tiny box!") It even has a key ring to it for extra portability! As much as I love the range ofy Cotman paints, once you get the hang of better watercolors, it's hard to step down.... :P

@@MeowMeowKapow I just swatched out the colours today with waterbrush in my sketchbook (which I commissioned a friend to do it! I bought I huge pack of Canson Montval pad and I gave him some sheets to make one for me), but I'll make a nice field test with them and probably will be my to go kit to illustrate my graduation final work! They're really nice and creamy, this watercolor is like a dream, do they sell open stock on Jackson's? Or should I try my luck in eBay? :O

Oh man, I love handmade sketchbooks! It’s so cool that you had your friend make you one!!! I hope you end up loving these paints-and yes, they are really soft and luxurious. When you paint with them, they.....glow. There’s no better word for it. It’s like a tiny ray of sunshine is mixed into the paints themselves. You can layer them a LOT and they get better and better as you do that-i especially like to use sennelier for portraits because it’s good for capturing all the subtle colors inside of skin. Like little bits of green and blue and purple layered in certain areas. And it looks like Jackson’s does open stock! www.jacksonsart.com/search/?q=Sennelier%20&fq%5Bcategory%5D=Sennelier%20%3A%20Watercolour&fq%5Bcategory_id%5D=2064&___store=jacksonsart_en&acc=5b8add2a5d98b1a652ea7fd72d942dac This is good and bad news for me because I sort of want to get a few more colors but I really don’t NEED to get more colors. =>.

HAHAHAH. Yes, my bags are usually like 90% “fun stuff” and then just my wallet and the obligatory granola bar and lip balm. But to be fair, my fun stuff I like....paint, sketchbooks, reading books, phone chargers, camera chargers.....quite a lot of ridiculous but utilitarian stuff when you look in the larger bags. But Pingu is my everyday bag, for when all I really need is my painting stuff and wallet and keys.

yes, please - a ton more travel kits videos ! :) you know you can go even smaller for your watercolor kit : if you take an aluminum business card holder + glue a sheet of magnet at the bottom + get smallish rectangular eye shadow pans (all of this can be very cheap), you can carry 14 colours in a super flat business card holder. i bet you'd lose it in your pockets, hihi !
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 5 жыл бұрын
The business card holders are actually BIGGER than these mini tins!!! That being said, I actually do have quite a lot of the materials you mentioned specifically because I considered making something similar, but without that irritating ledge that all biz card holders have on the inside. I do have a whole playlist of palette builds, by the way, and there’s one single build I’ve put up so far that’s smaller than these and hold 8 colors. It’s kind of cheating though, because the base for it is an existing child’s toy palette. =>.

I have a “huge extra bag” for when I really want to dive deep, but I’ve found that sometimes, even at home, I still use this setup. It’s just so easy to grab and use, and it’s literally always with me so there’s nothing extra involved. I think I’ll make a Skillshare class at some point on how to determine what palette setup is best for you and how to arrange it. Even if that means buying a premade one rather than making your own! And you’ve got those two mini palettes I gave you, you’ve already got super compact setups that could be used on the go-and that maze book that you sketched in! (I don’t know if you have a Skillshare but I taught how to make one there if you want to make another) Could always just put those in a small bag or pocket with a water brush and use them on the go! I also used to keep a stash of supplies in my desk/locker at work, so there could just be a permanent “travel set” stored away in your most commonly visited locations. I’m a nut and have a kit in just about every single bag in this house, just in case.....

Thanks for sharing this really cool set up in a walkthrough of how you paint on the go! Even just moving from my art space to my kitchen table is cumbersome as I find that I always want all of my supplies with me all the time 😂 I envy your ability to adapt without having to have every single paint you've ever owned sitting right in front of you. I'd like to try it sometime. Also I would love to watch a video about your bigger setup, maybe I could use it to help me minimalize my supplies but still have enough to make a purposeful piece like you said :)
@MeowMeowKapow

I used to want to have everything with me as well, but then I sort of accidentally forced myself to minimize due to occupation. When I started experimenting with watercolors, I was a teacher. Teachers get like....no breaks, but when we do it’s usually about 15 minutes. My desire to get to experiment with my Materials was more powerful than my desire to have all of them, so I just sort of devised a way to be able to paint whenever, wherever, no matter how much or little time I had. The panoramic book I’m using now is a new addition to the team, actually-i used to use a pocket-sized book so even my sketchbook was always in my pockets. I’d say, if you want to try working more freely.....force yourself to. Take a small palette, or make a small palette, and go out to a park or just outside of your house and paint something. You’ll be forced to adapt your mixing, but it’s definitely possible. I’ll film my slightly more complex setup when I get the chance. =^.^=

Those little metal boxes are really cute and compact. You said they were Altoid tins, right? Most all the lozenge boxes from any brand, that I see here, are made of plastic or cardboard, depending on the brand. There are some individually wrapped lozenges that are packed in a cellophane bag that has a tendency to fall apart before the lozenges are all used up. I do have a copy of travel size palettes that I use. One is from Qor and the other is from Schminke. The Qor set has really nice colors. The Schminke set has colors that seem to be an odd combination. The only vibrant color I can mix, with the colors available, is orange. If I had been in charge of picking the colors for this set, I would have picked different ones. I like the design of the Schminke set since it has a fold out place for color mixing. The Qor set has a mixing area between the two rows of paint. When I can get the Schminke paints used up, I will refill it with Daniel Smith. I may also look into acquiring Qor tube colors to use in the Schminke palette. But, I already have a lot of tubes of Daniel Smith paints.

Yes, the little tins I’m using for these are mini altoids tins! If you use amazon, I believe I linked to them in the doobly-doo. The package I get comes in a set of 9 or 12 or something and when I was a teacher, I used to give the mints to my kids as treats so I emptied quite a few of them. =>.

When I go out I bring a small sketchbook (5"x8") since I found that bigger ones (9"x12") are too clunky to just throw in a bag since most of the time since I prefer carrying the least amount of things I can. Aside from standard sketching materials (pencil,eraser ect.) I bring a water brush,paper towel and water soluble graphite pencils since their really easy to just throw in a small pencil case and work with on the go. When I have taken paints with me I would bring the student 12 half pan set by Lukas.... Although I don't really take paints with me much your videos tempt me to throw some kind of set together with paints I like more since you make painting on the go just look like SO much fun despite me being worried about acquiring your palette-making addiction if I do.

HAHAHAH. Oh yes, beware of the palette-making addiction. It’s a real problem. =>.
@danistumbling917

It's different when compared to watercolors in any form because at least to me I can use both normal pencils and water soluble pencils in a sketch and neither seems to stick out as much?(it doesn't look like 2 mediums together, more like 1 medium was used) because unlike watercolour and pencil sketches the textures/reflective-ness aren't that different from each other. So I guess it just makes my sketches look more harmonious when compared to just using black or grey watercolors with pencils. Water soluble graphite is also less erasable than normal pencils but more so than watercolours but that may also vary depending on brands. (I use Derwents water soluble pencils since that's just what the art store near my house sells) Basically I just like using water soluble graphite more when I'm just looking to have a black and white sketch rather than a coloured one for those reasons.

Well, I'm pretty new at this but what I've ben doing is picking out one color that I want to work with for example Mission Gold's red brown and I get my watercolor sketchbook out and start mixing that color with all my different reds, find one that I like the results of and add a cool color and a warm color. Not very scientific but I'm having fun. I would like to see your process for picking pallets. Here's the results of my red brown experiment - Red Brown, Perm. Rose, Viridian, Yellow Green (all Mission Gold) I'll post a pic of my sketchbook on my instagram feed and tag you

HAHAHAH. My process so far has been, quite literally, random. If you haven’t seen it already, I’ve shown my process is my dice roll palette video. I actually don’t think that I have ever intentionally chosen my own colors, yet. So far they’ve all been existing sets of colors, like trying out the m graham jewel tone set, or they’ve been actually random. Or it’s a studio palette that has all of the colors of a particular brand inside of it. I did start choosing colors for a new palette on purpose, recently, but I pretty much just said “okay, this tin can hold 15 half pans, what are 15 of my favorite colors?” Because I know for sure that I can work well with ANY color combo that’s thrown at me, I’m just basing it off of my feelings. Your method actually sounds way more scientific than mine, and I really like the way the color combo you’re building right now looks!
@marikamakes2506
@marikamakes2506 6 жыл бұрын
Yes! I have seen your dice roll vid. All I have is a regular 6 sided die which, now that I think of it, would be ok for a really small color palette! I just started a new watercolor sketchbook and I'm filling it with color swatches and different color combos and little test paintings. It's been great because I'm not being too precious about it and I'm painting all the time where as if I started a "real" painting i would kind of freeze up creatively or end up over working it. I still have a heavy hand and am trying to lighten up but I love those bright bold colors. I saw your video where you tried out the jewel tone set. They look so awesome! I really want them but I just ordered a little hand made set and It should be here any day and I can't buy any more right now! Someday soon they will be mine and I will make a tiny half pan tin with them!

I didn’t know panoramic books were a thing, either! I ordered it thinking it was much smaller and a sort of “normal” size, and was confused when it showed up but double-checked the measurements and it was exactly as ordered. So it sat in a pile for a while because I didn’t think it would be useful, until one day I decided to use it on a whim. Now? Absolutely love it. Really. Great point about the brush size!

Both kits are adorable. I like the minimalist version a little better though. It's so small and convenient! I don't have my art supplies with me all the time (I probably should change that), but when I do, I have a standart 12 pan palette and a travel brush with me. It's not as special as your kit! Oh gosh, there’s nothing special about these. They’re just covered in pretty tape, but they’re so silly and simple that they’re no big deal. I’m actually thinking about upgrading to one single, slightly larger set instead of always having these two together! 12 colors is a really good number most of the time, I bet your palette is really handy! I’m one of those people that is always just ridiculously well-prepared for every possible situation. And for me? Painting is a possible situation I’ll find myself in, so of course I’m going to have painting supplies with me at all times. I don’t use them all the time, but still....it’s nice to know they’re available if I suddenly want to, you know? And Bubba likes all things he can rub his face on. =>.

Pairing down colors is what I attribute my way better color theory control, honestly. And making my pieces much more cohesive. Looking back at some of my less successful works, I realize a large part of their failure was due to my just total lack of color planning/understanding/care. Entirely by accident, through making and taking mini tins of no more than six colors.....I managed to make my work so much better just by having such restrained color choices. Which was kind of a wild thing to realize after I was already quite deep into having done it. =>.

As usual, you have the MeowMeowKapowiest travel kits! I wish I could get more comfortable urban sketching, but I am okay if I'm tucked into a corner of a cafe and being ignored. I have a few travel palettes, one a Cotman sketchers with my fave transparent and jewel-tone DS paints for painting things and people and flowers, and a slim Expeditionary Art palette for landscapes with delicious granulating primateks and darks and ceruleans and some opaques, all DS paints (I think this format is becoming my favorite). Also have an Altoids tin (my first urban sketcher palette from 2010) with my Winsor & Newton and M Graham paints, which I love but the tin is very deep. And I have a lovely tiny tin with my Pruche handmade paints, a perfect earth triad for painting my nearby train yard. If I'm really traveling, I sometimes take my Mijello 18 well palette since it's water-tight and carries plenty of paint and mixing area. I love your handmade purse so much, it reminds me of the funky purses my cousins and I would make when we were young, I should make a new one! Thanks for always being the kapowiest!!

Wow! This is so amazingly small. I don’t know how you do it. I always feel extra nervous painting in public. It’s not that people care it’s more that I feel much more of a beginner and like what I draw looks nothing like what o see. I’m far less nervous with colored pencils or watercolor pencils. My “tiny” set up is bigger than yours. Lol. I have the same 12 half pan turned 24 half pan set for all my travels. The difference is that my light pack includes only 5 water brushes. And the Sennelier USK multimedia. I really want to make one of my own with some arches paper. The bigger setup includes the same palette of paints but adds 2 water cups, 4 full size travel brushes sizes 2,4,6,8 and an 8” by 5” journal or one of my DIY watercolor blocks. I have never used all 24 colors in one peice but I like having all my choices. I have 2 24 color travel palettes one for Sennelier and one for Daniel smith. The colors are more or less the same. I just use them for different styles.

You know honestly, I love a good indulgent setup and that’s what it sounds like you’ve got going on. =^.^= I’m thinking about slightly upgrading my mini palettes and switching over to a 15 color regular-sized altoids tin, though I hope it doesn’t distract me like large amounts of choice often seems to do. And for the public art? Honestly, I go into it knowing I’m not going to make something good. That’s why I sketch directly in pen! I have a different book that I started with that just has small portraits from when I first started doing this and they’re okay, but not great. BUT going in knowing that I’m going to make something imperfect has been weirdly freeing. It’s really made it easier for me to just let go and enjoy the process, even if the results aren’t that great. There are some real duds in this book, but I’ve also got some rockin’ successes as well and I love them all because this whole book is really just an experimental and learning process. I mostly just do it for myself, for the joy of painting, and I don’t always share what’s inside. I’ve only recorded a few of these pieces being made, and I think that there’s value in making bad art specifically just for your own eyes, not anybody else. And it if happens to turn out well anyway? Well then awesome! But if you go in truly expecting to screw up somehow it makes it so much easier and liberating to just try.

Meow Meow Kapow that’s so true! As for getting lost in all the colors I usually work and I say I’m going to use as few colors as possible. So I start with two colors and work using as few colors. As possible. I usually end up using 4-5 colors. So a lot of the color theory you already have helps wonderfully! I some times challenge myself to not use this or that color or to use this color or that color. But really I have found the most important thing to limit how many colors go into one piece. Here knowing pigment numbers can help you cheat. Like pbr7 I always count as one color. So I can use burnt/raw sienna/umber and it’s all one color. It also helps me as a beginner to not make a mess by having too many colors.

ColoringKaria I think back to before I worked with limited palettes-where I would use a dozen or so colors for one piece....using a maximum of like six colors per painting REALLY has improved the overall cohesiveness!

Please show the larger travel kit! Also, I am definitely appreciative of this smaller set up. Your other one is fancy and hella creative, but I agree that this one isnt as cumbersome. Do you ever miss your convenience colors? Have you disliked a color so much in a kit that you are willing to swap it out, or do you use everything to the bitter end? Also! Your M Graham videos made me interested in getting a few sets. That high pigment payload is so cool! But Senneliers glow... I think I’m going to have to live vicariously through you for a while longer before I choose LOL! As always thanks for the Bubba and your time.

I really like your little minimalist palettes. The first one is cool, but not very practical I would say, too much stuff that might get in the way! I myself settled on a portable painter palette and a couple of travel brushes for my kit. I don't really paint in public so it really just had to be something light that hopefully won't confuse security checking the x-ray scanners at airports much. I already have enough hassle and weight with all my cameras and film, so I didn't want to complicate things with my watercolour palette! Also, I tend to travel for longer trips, so I hope running out of a colour might not be much of a problem if I have 12 pans! By the way, the Perylene Violet arrived, it's so lovely!!! Swatched it and immediately switched out the neutral grey in my palette to make space for it!
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 6 жыл бұрын
Ugh, yes, perylene violet is soooooooo pretty. 😭 I love it so much. And if you mix it with Quin Gold, it makes a beautiful, golden, light brown skin tone that is so luxurious and gorgeous. I hope it treats you well!! I’ve seen the portable palette and I think I would be interested in it if I hadn’t been making my own palettes for a while before it showed up on the block. My favorite aspect is that double-ended brush, and everyone I know who’s gotten it says it’s not as useful as they’d like since it’s super small. Sigh. Oh well. I’m grateful to not be desperately in need of it. =>.
@LillySchwartz
@LillySchwartz 6 жыл бұрын
Meow Meow Kapow I also really liked the mixes I could get with the Perylene Violet! Such a lovely colour! I have to say that I wasn't too impressed with that double ended brush. I'm not a big fan of getting my hand wet unexpectedly while painting 😂 I like everything else about that palette though! Well, apart from the problem that only Winsor &. Newton pans fit in there maybe. The way it handles is the most important aspect though and that I really like!

W&N pans are super highly prized in my world, and I can’t find any empty ones for sale. 😭 the reason I love them is because you can always reliably get 6 half pans into a mini altoids tin as long as at least one, if not TWO of them are the w&n ones. Sigh. Not that that’s related to what we were talking about but OH WELL. =>.
@LillySchwartz
@LillySchwartz 6 жыл бұрын
Meow Meow Kapow Same here! I do use a lot of W&N paints, but usually I buy tubes. Basically if I want to swap out a colour I have to buy a W&N pan of it and they obviously don't have everything. I guess over time I'll accumulate some empty ones, but it's somewhat annoying. I also can't easily transfer colours from my main palette, since they tend to be in empty Schmincke pans, which I can get cheaply.

Those are all really good points! I think it's super cool that you have found a way to continue to participate in the connection, no matter what else may be causing problems. I'm still pretty new to being a participant in the visual arts. I had been comfortable as a writer for a long time, but after some life events occurred a few years back I have had a very hard time getting back into that groove. I hope I'll be able to that again one day, but in the last year and a half or so I've found the wordless creativity of watercolor to be a super welcome change of pace. But, so far, I haven't attempted painting in any kind of social environment. Maybe when I get more familiar with it and it doesn't require all of my focus, that'll be something that works for me, too. ^^
@MeowMeowKapow

Ah! I hope you find your words again. =^.^= for me, my thoughts are entirely visual so I can think in, create, and view pictures as easily as breathing. But if I have to do anything with words? If I have to speak or if I have to listen or write? It requires ALL of my concentration. I pity the fool that tries to talk to me while I’m writing something, because breaking my concentration when I’m doing my best to be coherent and use words to communicate makes me super frustrated. I wonder if perhaps, since words are the medium close to your soul, calligraphy is something you’d find relaxing? Just using watercolors to loosely create backgrounds and painting words-either meaningful or totally nonsensical-would be fun for you?
@ariweaver1543
@ariweaver1543 6 жыл бұрын
That's a good idea. I recall, now that you mention it, that I did look up calligraphy a while ago, before I found watercolor, but I was kind of bored by it. I felt like all the calligraphy looked the same, either the modern style with the big, loopy letters at different heights, or the super clean and precise old styles, like Copperplate. I mean, don't get me wrong, those old styles are super impressive, but they seemed super out of my league, and all the modern stuff looked easier but less interesting, to me personally. But, maybe I can try to add some of my own creativity into my letters, now that I'm getting more confident in my own artistic "voice." It's definitely something worth trying. ^^

Who knows, maybe now IS the right time to try it? I’ve gone back and tried crafts as well as supplies that I thought I didn’t like and it turns out that all I needed was to move just a little further forward in my own life’s timeline to enjoy them. Like maybe I needed to acquire a different skill first, or I needed to have my perspective changed, or needed to get different supplies. Who knows. Art is funny like that.

She’s a brilliant watercolorist, and a pioneer of self-made palettes and sketchbooks. She has some videos here on KZbin, and some excellent books. Highly recommended, if you’re not familiar with her. Very different painting style to yours, but she has great techniques.

I can't even fit my phone in the pockets of my jeans, they're only good for holding coins, haha. I was super confused when I got the 12+3 van gogh set because they call it "pocket size". I'm starting to feel like pockets of most women's clothing is for decoration. I really like both sets, having everything in a bigger tin with more mixing space sounds pretty good but I love how small, cute and portable the second set is. I only have a 24 metal tin that I put my van goghs in, but I'll definitely build a tiny set when I buy daniel smith watercolors. (P.S I love your cat.)
@MeowMeowKapow

Yeah, “fake” pockets on women’s clothing makes me so mad!!! That’s part of why I’m just completely obsessed with eShakti; because their pockets are huge! My pocket-side palettes genuinely fit in my pockets, even if they’re bigger than this! I think each set has its use, but because of the way I like to be able to just snap my fingers and be able to paint quickly, these super mini tins are my go-to. And what a coincidence! I ALSO love my cat. =^.^= his name is Bubba, and he’s the sweetest little stinky bean that you ever did see....even though he also sometimes likes to chomp on toesies. =>.

He's such a cutie! Two black cats visit our backyard every day and I love them, one of them looks like Bubba. He's a weird cat, he always sits in strange positions and he let kittens "drink milk" from him once. (Why am I such a crazy cat lady) Also, a bit unrelated but do Daniel Smiths lose vibrancy when they dry? I heard Qor does so I was wondering if other tube watercolors do that. Even if they do they're so beautiful that I'll buy them anyway lol. I'm planning on buying the essential's set, burnt sienna/umber, prussian blue (not really sure about this one because this palette already has a cool blue and I can't spend a lot of money, but... It's my favorite blue), either yellow ochre or raw sienna, phthalo green and payne's gray. Is that a good palette or should I add more to it?

Hmm, I think that palette will be good enough since it's close to my current palette. I love limited color palettes too though, my current favorite is prussian blue, madder lake deep and yellow ochre. I just discovered it's a pretty cool palette after trying to mix my own payne's gray lol That's good to hear, color shift has been a bit annoying for me because I still think the color I put down is too dark so I lift it a bit with tissue paper, then water down my paint slightly. But it just ends up being too pale after it dries. What I actually was talking about is uhm. Is reactivated dry tube paint the same as paint from the tube? I've heard dry Qor behaves differently than wet Qor but I'm not sure how true that is. Maybe it's just because of the different binder they use. (I wasn't more specific in my question, sorry about that. I'm still trying to get better at English >.
@MeowMeowKapow
@MeowMeowKapow 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, don’t worry about it-my misunderstanding! And actually, some people feel Qor behaves differently when dried, but I’ve used it dried and fresh and it feels the same to me. Daniel smith also feels the same to me both dry and fresh from the tube. =^.^= some people say that Daniel smith’s French ultramarine dries hard as a rock and isn’t easy to rewet, but that has not been my experience; their French ultramarine works just fine for me as well!
