TRANSCRIPTION [A light-skinned Mexican-American, named Stacey, is bare-faced with messy brunette bed-hair. She is wearing 90s choker necklace and silver cross necklace. On the top right, 4 social media logo icons are shown: Facebook, Instagram, KZbin and Twitter. Followed by “@deafinitelywanderlust.” Following by black animated text that says “Day of the Dead (Die de Muertos)”] hello! Guess what is today?! Day of the Dead! So I'm going to show you the culture of Mexico!! [Stacey is now wearing a black eyeliner with messy ponytail. On the right side of the screen, a vertical black and white image shows Stacey in Day of the Dead black-only makeup.] This photo of me was taken 2 years ago I really like this one. I like something really simple - half dead face. I feel like... I am living and juggling between life and death. so, I like that. and this photo of me? [On the right side of the screen, another vertical colored image of Stacey who is wearing Day of the Dead makeup. She has half dead face with pink web around her eye.] I think that was taken during the year of 2011 I'm not that great with makeup, to be honest. so, here is the thing: is it the same as Halloween? [Two images showed up in the bottom right. Images of 3 pumpkins with candle lit inside. The middle pumpkin is carved with words: “trick or treat.” On the bottom, the photo shows a white hand holding a pumpkin bucket. On the top right, an animated talk bubble then appeared with white text: “Day of the Dead is NOT Halloween!”]. No, it's not. It's very DIFFERENT. Some people think it's Halloween, because it's happening on the SAME week of Halloween I understand why people think that way, but but I assure you that it's really different. It's part of Mexican culture. such a pretty cat! [A Siamese cat with tannish and black fur with blue eyes is sitting on the toilet. On the top right, an animated black and white circle appeared with white text: “my cousin’s cat! - el gato de mi prima!”] she has very nice eyes! [A light-skinned Asian-American male with jet black hair is standing behind Stacey, attempting to get attention to say something to her. An animated black and white bar appeared on the middle left side of the screen with white text: “Jason Hoang. @JasonHoangFit.” A white arrow animated to point at Jason. Two laughing emojis then showed up on both bottom right corners.] It is important to put on the sunscreen first it is because the sun here is strong It's cloudly too but it is still important to use it what's up? Jason: It's best to film there because of the light is better to film Stacey: okay, okay. Jason: it's so-so Stacey: you don't like it?! why?! Jason: it looks fake Stacey: (beep) you. Jason: are you ready to go? [A decoration of a Oaxacan’s folk animal of a jaguar with wings - which is one of the alebrijes (brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures) is shown along with 5 others characters from a Disney movie called, Coco. On the right side of the screen, a movie poster of Coco is shown.] Stacey: yes! Stacey: there are so many people!! friend: siiii!! (yess!!) [A light-skinned Deaf Mexican male is wearing squared back glasses, brown hat, red floral shirt and a black watch on his left wrist. He also has a brown beard with few grey hair. He has a black tattoo on his left arm. An animated black and white bar appeared on the top left side of the screen with white text: “Ernesto Escobedo. Deaf Mexican Activist”]. Ernesto (friend): there is a parade where many people come to celebrate day of the dead! Why is it "day of the dead"? "Dead." Many people around the world don't understand Well, Day of the Dead have its origins in Aztec traditions by the Aztecs who are indigenous people of Mexico It's a tradition where they honor the dead when someone they know passed away, they cut off the heads and the knife through the dead heads and place them on the altars It can be women, men, even children they will put them all on the altars and honor them. [On the top left, an animated black and white circle appeared with white text: “Today, we don’t do that anymore - but we celebrate to honor and remember o ur loved ones who passed away”]. So that was a tradition for years (which later changed) so now, today is the Day of the Dead festival If you are short like me, you have to bring a chair so that you can stand on it and look over the crowd or you come in the morning and reserve your spots in the front! I came to Mexico for THIS!!! oh my god, it's so amazing!!! It's one of my dreams to see in my life! Jason: She's short, so it's hard for her to see. Jason: It's so good! So champ! You should come and see it!

[On the top right, a semi-transparent yellow map of Mexico is shown. Two pinpoint icons show where CDMX and Oaxaca are located. Then, “CDMX” changed to “modern” which was flashing repeatedly. AS well as Oaxaca that changed to “traditional” which was also flashing repeatedly]. It is more modern here in Mexico City It has changed over time And in Oaxaca, it's more traditional where it still carries for many years to this day. So, it's different here in Mexico City. I'm so happy to experience this! I will also grab the opportunity in Oaxaca next!!! I'm so excited! Ernesto: These are candies and these are spicy candies. There are different kinds. [On the top left, a Venezuelan flag is shown. Next to Stacey, a light-brown skin Deaf Venezuelan male is wearing black Nike hat, silver earrings and a white hoodie.] Stacey: He is from Venezuela! Venezuelan friend: yes! I am from Venezuela. I've moved to Mexico City here And I really like it here. Many amazing things here! and in Venezuela, it's so different! [The screen then split into two. Two different vertical videos are shown of interviewing Ernesto. On the bottom, a white animated bar appeared with black text: “Filmed Ernesto to explain about Deaf Mexican community!”]. Stacey: As for taking photos.....damn. It's hard because I'm short. I was standing far behind the crowd I was standing on a chair to see above the crowd so, the photos I've taken are far Because of that, I had to crop the photos for closer looks - or I hope so! [The screen now split into 4 to show 4 different landscape (or horizontal) photographs of the festival. On the central of the screen, a black text appeared: “These are my photographs. Not the best but I tried!”] I'm visiting Ernesto's house There are many signatures around his house! wow. He has different people who signed his walls This is in Spanish language (Español) There are some in English around too (asking Ernesto) are there other languages? or that's it? oh, there is French too! Ernesto will explain! I have these signatures because Many different people from around the world come here to CDMX and sign my house Some people knew that I have signatures in my house and they'll contact me for this! so, I grabbed the opportunities to have their signatures! Signatures are from different football players who are famous here in Mexico and a famous filmmaker, a famous teacher in Mexico, There are many signatures from Mexicans and there are some from outside of Mexico. For an example: Do you know who is Princess Diana from UK? who learned British Sign Language (BSL) from Clark who is Deaf. Diana was learning how to sign BSL and Diana's nephew is also Deaf - he stayed over at my place here and he signed that! I also want Stacey's and Jason's signatures because they are well-known Deaf travelers so, I had to invite both of you to my house and welcome and care for you guys! and give you memories to leave your marks in Mexico! I'm happy! and now they're ready to sign here! Thinking where to sign my house Jason: it's your turn to sign! Stacey: hmm....where should I sign it?! Ernesto also has other collections than signatures such as arts, awards, etc. Ernesto: it's SOOOOOO little Wondering what is this? (Signing name) He is now a board member of World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) His name is Angel who is from Venezuela The president, who is his father, did this and I added my signature and this one? One of my favorite memories: In San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato, which you already visited. Stacey: yes! Ernesto: At the school there, after my presentation, there was this small kid who gave this to me and I was really touched. and I wanted to honor that kid by putting it here Stacey: that's really beautiful! An artist from Puerto Rico gave this to me and I hang this up to remember. Stacey: I don't think I even have a collection Ernesto: now, let me show you another room! let's go! Ernesto: Before, I was working on this book for 2 years Who sponsored this book? Turkey! They gave me the money and I published this book with many copies and gave it to many people This is Mayan. [On the top right of the screen, a white box appeared with black text: “Chican Sign Language is an indigenous sign language in Mexico!”] I filmed and collected data of Deaf Mayan people for this dictionary Chican. Where is Chican? The culture there is different! I hope to look for sponsors in the future to receive funds for this book in Mayan language, including English and Spanish All languages will be included for international readers to understand their sign language where Mayan can show their pride of their Chican sign language [On the top left of the screen, a white box appeared with transparent text: “Thank you!”] thank you! Stacey: My day is now finished. It's time to sleep. [Stacey’s cousin’s cat showed up and climbed on her. Her tail whacked Stacey’s face. Two animated “hit” icons appeared with black text that says “WTF is this”] I'm happy to grab the opportunity here. You just have to see it for yourself. byeeeee! [cut to a mauve purple and white frame with a centered video of Stacey who is sitting on one of the ruins and looking at the ruins of Teotihuacán. In the navy blue frame, a white text appeared on the top center: “follow or subscribe for more stories!” The logo of Facebook, Instagram, KZbin and Twitter are also shown on the top left of the video screen with “@deafinitelywanderlust.” On the bottom center of the white frame, it says “www.deafinitelywanderlust.com”]

Hi! Nice to meet you, Heidi! Although my family lives in Mexico, I live in the USA. So, if you plan to visit Mexico, I suggest you meet the Deaf communities by visiting Deaf associations, assertively message Deaf Mexicans via Instagram or Facebook (that's what I did, lol), and try to find different Deaf Mexican groups if you're on Facebook. One of the groups called, Eventos culturales para Sordos, it shows different events. You can check that in the future too since we're all in this crisis. I've shared some ways I did to meet with the local deaf community here: deafinitelywanderlust.com/2018/07/how-to-find-deaf-travel-buddy/
