So you've been accepted to Emily Carr University of Art & Design and you're looking at your options - maybe contemplating a major in Communications Design.
I received my Bachelors Degree from ECUAD in Communications Design in 2018 - and have been working as a Marketer and Digital Designer for the past two years. Honestly, I think my experience here helped me immensely as a Designer and if given the choice, knowing what I know now - I would go again in a heartbeat.
It's a great school - challenging at times, confusing and frustrating at others - but overall I feel it helped my develop my skillset immensely.
The program is very heavily focused on developing concepts, research and the creative process rather than technical skills - and I felt this allowed for deeper exploration of design concepts and greater creative freedom within projects.
This video covers my honest thoughts and opinions about the school, broken into four chapters:
- What is Communications Design?
00:44
- What is the program like?
3:00
- What is the school like?
18:37
- Honest thoughts and opinions
20:00
I could go on for hours about the school, my time, and my experiences - but these were my main takeaways about the program and school.
If you've got any questions please feel free to drop them down in the comments below - happy to help however I can!

ohhhh the part where she asked what grade you deserved before giving you a C+ made me so upset!!! as the child of an ECU alumni and having had multiple profs/teachs over the years who came from ECU, who've given me the experience... you gotta use that opportunity up!! 😭 talk about all the hard work you did! you deserve an A and that's what you have to sell! i know this is many years past but for anyone wondering what to do in that situation, talk about your research, your countless hours, etc! they will believe you because that's what they're looking for!! thank you for this so much btw. i applied for foundations (planning for communication design) this fall knowing nothing about what to expect. i guess i'll have to brush up on my public speaking! 😂 this was awesome.

Omg absolutely! Realize that now when they ask you that question they’re genuinely curious and they’re not just testing to see how modest you are 😂😂 Thanks for watching! 💞

Um this might be really late but I received an offer for ECU this fall! Just wondering how ECU compares to say like other schools like UBC, SFU, or CAPU and their Creative/Fine Arts programs. Think im leaning towards ECU though but thanks in advance!

WOW I'm so sorry for the late response... but if this doesn't help you anymore maybe it'll help others looking to attend. I'm not too too sure since ECUAD's the only Design school I attended. BUT I did have a friend that attended a 1 year program at VCAD and in comparison I'd say his program was a lot more focused on teaching techniques and concrete skills rather than concepts. For example, he had more core classes concentrated on teaching him how to use Adobe programs, whereas those classes weren't mandatory for us - the program at ECUAD grooms you be a "Creative Director" so there's lots of building out concepts instead. Hope this helps!

Hi! thanks for this video it was so informative could i please ask you about "illustration" program? i wanted to know if they only teach hand works or digital works too
@gloriacondy
@gloriacondy Жыл бұрын
Sure! I know this is a late response but maybe it'll help others. You definitely can take more digital-centric courses, you can even throw in a random animation class if you wish, but I chose traditional art (painting and drawing in real life).

Is this a little bit different than UX design or Human Computer Interaction/Interaction Design? I want to learn something related to UX design for Bachelor’s and looking for university transfer program at college. This seems more like book or poster project design? Which is still cool but not sure…. I’m Japanese who wants to study UX, cuz it’s related to phycology, Marketing.
@gloriacondy
@gloriacondy Жыл бұрын
Yes, very different! In a nutshell, Communications Designers create concepts for creative marketing campaigns (Posters, social media marketing ads). The course also goes over graphic design and just a little UX design - but there's an Interaction Design course that I think is better suited for the program you're looking for.

@3:40 it would have been nice to see what "good" graphic design is compared to the "bad" stuff you showed, it may be obvious to you, but to me those looked good haha
