Hi Bel. I went to York to study English and Related Literature as a mature student in 1996. Lot's of what you say here chimes with me. It was an inspirational place then, and by all accounts that's not changed. I loved York so much I stayed to do my masters and then my PhD there (16th Century Court Poetry natch!). English was based in Langwith when I was there, but there wasn't a dedicated English centre then, either. I loved the seminars best too. Perhaps a little bit too much, as I should have probably shut up occasionally and let someone else have a go. I was like a pig in clover! I did a bit of teaching on the Shakespeare and his Contempories module at York, but sadly a full-on academic career turned-out not to be for me. I'm teaching English in the Langauage Services Department of the University of Nantes now, and our daughter is at school in France. That's how I found your channel - she's studying Antigone this semester and I was looking for some help for her. Your summary is excellent. Hope your Masters is as much fun as mine was. I met my wife in Langwith Coffee Bar...

How did you study English if you wrote 'lot's'?! 🤣

@@bbmcgee33 More carefully than I write comments on You Tube obviously. I think the question you meant to ask in this context was "did you really study English?" rather than "how".

Hi I'm about to start a degree in English at York in October and I'm really excited. Just wondering if you had any tips on how to bridge the gap between A-Level and degree level as you said this was one of the cons you found in first year?

That's so exciting! Congratulations! Yeah of course, so I would recommend just a few really simple things: firstly, try and read widely (literature from lots of different genres and periods) until your degree starts, and get used to annotating/thinking about themes as you read. Secondly, really use the office hours of your tutors. If there's a lecture that confused you, then go to an office hour and ask for clarification, or if there's a topic you really enjoyed, go to an office hour and tell them that, and start a conversation about it! And lastly, when it comes to assessment time: always always, when you first think of your essay idea etc. go to an office hour to chat through your idea and get some good advice! I think these tips would really help with that gap: the gap might still exist, but you'll be equipped that it will be easy to handle! Have a wonderful time studying at York Eliza, I love it so much here!

@@BelsBooks aww thank you so much this is really great advice, I really appreciate it! One of the main things I love about Literature is it's versatility and openness to interpretation so being able to freely discuss it with tutors and learn the different perspectives of other people is ideal. I will definitely use the office hours! Thanks again :)

@@elizaweeks3062 I’m happy to give it! When I went to university and got to speak to other people as passionate about English as me in seminars for the first time, it was so life changing, and SO much fun. Also to be taught by lecturers who were so passionate about their subjects! It’s just fantastic

I loved your video it was so helpful thank you very much! I'm thinking about applying for English literary studies for ma but I'm not from uk and have doubts about acceptance :( Do you think it's really competitive and quite hard to get in for MA? Do I have to have super high grades?

Hey! I would definitely apply - I didn't do the MA Lit Studies, I did MA Medieval Lit... I think you do need *good* marks but they don't have to be perfect or incredible. You'll probably have to submit a writing sample or two, and I think this will be more important! Just make sure you really submit something that showcases your abilities and skills. Definitely apply though - better to try and be rejected than not try at all! Does that help at all?

I start my English degree at York this October! I had to defer twice, which they usually don't allow, due to becoming homeless during the pandemic and due to disability. I am honestly ecstatic to finally be going and I can't wait. I have so many fears and nerves, but I just fell in love with York as a uni and with the English department and having 2 years deferred has only made me more excited and determined. Thanks so much for your video! It's incredibly helpful :)
