My Experience Working as a Server at Chili's

I had a similar experience as a server at a sports bar. I got paid $2.15/hr and often, usually during afternoon shifts, my tips wouldn’t even reach minimum wage (which was 7.25/hr) and my employer would have to make up the difference. I still remember one newlywed couple that came in. They were so happy and in love and they bought me a tray of deep fried pickles after I told them I had not tried them yet. They were so sweet and kind and left the table giggling and whispering to each other. When I cleared their table they had left me a $30 tip 🥹 It was such a kind gesture that I have remembered even years later. On the flip side, one day I got a couple who came in with such a bad attitude. The cook messed up one of their orders and had to remake it, so by the time that they got their food, one entree was cold and they were not happy with the portion size of the other entree. The couple asked for the manager and got a free meal. On the way out they told the manager that they were never coming back. So in response, the manager fired me and kept the cook. Sometimes it’s the little things people do that make the biggest impact.

I love having a second job as a server. Wind up making $20-$30/hr and get exercise. It’s hard work, but definitely makes you appreciate the value of a dollar.

I work at Chili's and I average $200 to $300 on a normal night.

Thanks so much for sharing. Ten years ago, I worked two retail jobs to help pay for university. It was really humbling in that people were such jerks and they treated me terribly as a cellphone sales person. Now I'm in a position where I haven't worked retail in almost ten years and will never have to. I'm thankful for the perspective it provided me.

Huddle house was that job for me. It was my first job. I currently work at Chili's. In 12 days it will be my one day anniversary there. I started out as a foodrunner, then switched to Togo, QA and host, in two weeks I will start serving and the bar. I really loved your video. Thanks for sharing.

Great video girl this brought me back to my college days busting my ass working two jobs. The good and the bad helped me become the women I because today. My job was working in childcare getting pee and poop on me but loved teaching. It makes me appreciate all the work I put in early to stand out in my field. Now I have flexibility as a educational director and can appreciate my own babies.

I always tip generously at restaurants like that... my uncle and I used to meet at Chili's every Friday night after work, same table, staff all had our orders memorized basically. I'll never forget a night where one of the hostesses who worked near our table randomly got catcalled (I think is the right term?) by some creepy college dude. She was 17 years old, still in high school. He said something like "Hey girl, can I get dat Snap?" (Meaning Snapchat). She shook her head and he left and we were like "what the f..." I asked her how often that happens to her, and she said the worst case was three in one night. Service workers don't get paid nearly enough for the BS that these customers throw at them.

Hello Justine, thank you for the video. I have a bit of a different perspective in that I had a very hard time finding a service job as a young person because I have a small disability that is sometimes hard to hide. I had to find work using my school and knew that I had to save and micromanage my budget down to the last penny. It was a horrible experience, but the budgeting/saving has served me well as I've moved up in my career. I hope people are more compassionate with people looking for low wage entry level work and have disabilities than they were 20 years ago.

Oh the good of Chili Days! Cleaning the chip machine, being asked to mix ranch and salsa (barf), but then getting the cooks to make us a quesadilla after our shift 😂 Chris was an angel! ❤

I ran a laundromat for 5+ years. The one thing I learned was how lonely people are!😢 Some people would come in to do their laundry even if they didn't really have anything to wash just for something to do and in the pursuit of conversation. I would always converse with these people because I believe the 2 biggest problems in America are cheating spouses and loneliness.

I know the feeling. While I wasn't depressed or really lonely, it was nice when I recognized some people at my local laundromat and we would just chat the few hours it took to do our loads.

as someone currently working in fast food hearing you call an 8 hour shift a "double" gave me whiplash 6-7 hours is a normal shift for me, and a "double" would be 13+ 😅

EXACTLY! I work at Disney Springs in Florida and a lunch shift would 7hrs, dinner be 8+hrs and a TRUE double(opening to close) was usually 13+hrs. Sometimes, I'm lucky and get scheduled a mid shift like 12noon to 8/8:30ish. I don't think this young lady was meant to be a server.
