Kiaora from New Zealand. It's very interesting to see, that there are close similarities between your Irish wake, and what we call a tangi. We Maori begin the mourning process immediately at the cessation of one's life, and it's amazing how quickly everything moves. Grief is a very important process and the burden is shared with the immediate family and close and not so close friends and neighbors. It continues for two or three days, and one is supported through this grieving process, tears are shed quite openly, acts like a valve., and relieves any pent up emotions. Death is a very real thing, so life and death are celebrated in their own way. Thank you for sharing your culture away from the sterility of today's fast track life style. God bless you. P.S. I have Irish ancestry too, Sullivan.

I lived in NZ for 2 years and there's a surprisingly huge overlap between Irish and Maori culture. From the humour, to the friendliness, to the myth and to the outlook on life. Two strong, beautiful cultures who have suffered so much but remain so strong to themselves. Kia Kaha bro

Thank you for posting this video. I am doing my first one for my father. He was my best friend, the best person, the best giving person I have ever known. I miss you so much:) RIP

So warm and beautiful. I cry to think of the cold loneliness of the funerals of my family. I wish we had experienced the old ways of saying goodbye and the comfort of our friends...

The etymology behind 'wake' goes back to the time of disease and famine in Ireland. A body may appear to be dead but is actually awake. I'm not so sure .. I like to think of it as the trail left by a boat. The boat appears and then disappears leaving just a trail of its passing called 'wake' en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake_(physics) Be sure to leave a few ripples.
