I bought a Blacklabel V2 as my first fixed gear bike and i got to say after almost a year of riding it almost daily in the warmer seasons it was totally worth it. It seems that State has taken this video seriously as i didn’t experience any of the problems presented in this video. I’ve upgraded the crank (even though the updated bike probably didn’t need it), saddle, bars, and rear wheel (i didn’t experience the metal noise in this video), and it has been an extremely solid bike for what I’ve put into it. I see myself riding this bike for MANY years to come. If you are looking for your first fixed gear bike this would be a very viable option for you.

I am really loving my Black Label. I bought the same color frame set but built it up in a straight army green / black which I agree looks so good! I also agree that the bike is actually very comfortable for being as torsionally stiff as it is. I think the full carbon fork along with 28c tires smooth out a lot of the bad road chatter. I can actually say that I didn’t have any of the QC problems when I got the frame set. Cheers!

Ive had a State Black Label V1 for about 1.5 years. I logged 1500 miles on it this year alone. I have only had one issue, when I received the bike, a spoke on the front wheel was damaged. I contacted State over their website's chat box. I shot some pictures over and they simply sent me to my local bike shop to have it repaired. All I had to do was send a copy of the receipt for the repair (about $40) to them and they would reimburse me. This was a super easy process and the bike has been perfectly fine since then. I look forward to logging many more miles on this frame before looking for my next bike.

I have 4 fixies from different manufacturers. The Black Label V2 is the best of them. It's very well made, lighter and lightning fast. Beyond its badass looks, it's high quality. I bought it in 2020 and did not have any issues. This vid was made in 2018, so I expect State improved their QC process since. My bike was flawless. For my preferences though, I replaced the handlebars with pursuits, upgraded the tires to Fyxation Session 700s because I trust them, and replaced the saddle to match the other bikes I have. This bike rocks. It's the best bike I've ever owned, and I can fly on this thing. I will probably buy State again someday. Until then, the V2 is all I want to ride.

I had the Blacklabel V2 in that same color and I SERIOUSLY regret getting rid of it. Highly recommend the panaracer gravelking tires for it. It was a sweet bike for my city slashing and commuting needs. Wish I could get it back.

I know this video is almost four years old, but State Bicycles are looking more attractive today than when this video was shot. Aventon ONLY sells e-bikes now (seriously!! check their website), and Wabi cycles is out of every single bike except for one model in a 60 cm (XL) frame size. Yeesh. I want more competition and brands to choose from not less!!! ;(

I bought a black label last year great bike no issues with it put and I have over a 500 miles on it.I have made a few upgrades on it like a new seat , tyres and clipless pedals. Bought it on line from sbc had no issues accept for the over torking of the carbon forks. Only had to true the wheelsets once in a year I commute to work everyday I would highly recommend this bike .

Bought the matte black frameset a couple months ago and built it up with my older archetype to dt Swiss wheelset and a few newer parts from retrogression. Ended up being a pretty cheap build as my second bike and I’ve loved it ever since. Very beautiful and responsive frameset

I bought a matte black Black Label in June, and have ridden it for over 1300km since. Fortunately I didn't encounter any of the same quality control issues. I swapped the generic 23c wire bead tires for some 25c folding tires - the ride is noticeably more comfortable, and saved a decent amount of weight.

@@geoff5623 Thanks for that. I'm switching over to a v2 from a cx style commuter with Big Apple tires, so the lack of tread / water handling makes me nervous. Do you ride with these in the wet?

@@johnbravodemicoli1456 Yup, I've done a lot of cycling in the rain on 23mm and 25mm road tires. A little more caution is required when cornering or braking in the wet, like on any bike, but narrow cycling tires don't really need tread to help push water out of the way to contact the road surface. I'm more worried about sand/gravel or oil patches while cornering than about water.

I’ve been riding a black label V2 for nearly a year. I actually got lucky and my bike arrived without damage (this time) and I’ve really enjoyed riding the bike, probably but about 1000 miles of that bike and it’s always been a blast to ride. I have changed quite a few parts though: stem, bars, seat, post, front wheel, pedals and sprocket, most of which happened pretty quickly 😂

Love you videos, keep them coming! I own a 6061 Black Label and love it. However... I did build up the bike myself, with a coaster wheel-set. I ride seasonal and rode for at least 2 months 6 miles a-day on it. To me this bike/frame is more of a casual cruiser with track inspired styling. I am 6ft exactly and ride a 59cm.

Thank you for this, I have been thinking about a black label for a while. I really dig the army green color. My issue is that from citygrounds they only have a 52 and 59cm size one being too small and the other being too big. It sucks because a 55 is almost too big to standover.

Agree about quality control. Bought mine used and neither State nor the previous owner had put grease on bolts, seatpost etc. But the pedals and seat had been upgraded to aftermarket items 👍 They're even better value used.

Just a thought...round chainrings actually do slacken the chain just KZbin the slow mo of it on the other hand oval chainrings don’t have any slack while pedaling so having a perfectly round chainring really isn’t the positive that you’re describing it to be...now if it’s supposed to be round and is oval you’re right that is a problem

Zach - one thing I wanted to bring to your attention are the bike reviews on their site. They seem to be controlling which reviews are posted to possibly skew their bike ratings. You will hardly see any low ratings, which is strange. I am currently waiting on my rating to be posted. One of the reasons I went with this bike over the Aventon Mataro is because of their "good" reviews. Now I'm starting to feel suspicious. Perhaps you can get an answer out of them quicker than us?

My first fixed gear was a SB black label 1st generation, I was happy with it. However these 2 generation have not the level of components the 1st ones had. They are cheaper and not as good as the previous version, but the bike itself cost more or less the same as 1st generation and for that reason I did not purchase another SB. Also when you post a review on their website that does not suit their standards, they will just ignore and delete it so as to have only amazing reviews... Customer service is brilliant though.

Great bike. BUT, the crankset is weak, the seat is very uncomfortable (at least for me), quality control isn't great, and ordering through state's website is confusing if you aren't familiar with bike components. Buy from a bike store and upgrade to a stiffer crank for a solid ride.

I have owned once since 2013. It's heavy yet reliable. Too large a gear but easily rectified. wheels are super heavy nice ride love the bullhorn bars

probably best to define a price point. because the best could mean it is 10k. if you imply cheap, so bang for buck.. i think it comes back to Kilo TT like everytime. i dont have one but a friend has the WT version, it just has wider tire clearance, and the bike is really nice to ride and does not weigh what it looks like it would.

Kilo TT. I got one from bike island with extremely minor scuffs, but brand new for 250 bucks over Black Friday. All you need to upgrade is pedals, tires and saddle. Which you are probably going to do on just about every bike you buy. Amazing quality to price ratio.

Only thing I dislike about the Black Label V2 is the full carbon fork. I ride HARD in the streets, and I do not want risk cracking the fork. But if I did crack the fork, it shows that I am pretty strong, so....... 🙄😏 I wished I built up my own frameset!!!! >:(
