God Bless America! =) I think you'll be hearing from some Dream Theater and Tool fans. =) I'd also mention the band America, if for no other reason than the band name =) and they knew how to write a great song. Ambrosia and Alice Cooper both hold a special spot in my heart, as does The Dear Hunter for modern prog. Beach Boys? (I think you didn't mention The Eagles and Bruce Springsteen, perhaps ashamed of those. haha) I added a bunch of these to the Musical Musings by Scot Lade on Prog Radio, and when putting it together I was SOOO hoping you'd mention Grand Funk Railroad..."We're an American Band...oooh hooo," but I would have played Paranoid...love that song.

PS By the way, I had a pleasant shock when you held up that record by Minor Threat. Our bassist (Keilan Knight) is a major fan of American hardcore punk rock, especially from the 1980s and Minor Threat are one of his favourite groups. He joined UNIT in 2017 and for his first album with us (Revenge & Retribution, our 32nd album), we opened with no less than 4 covers of Minor Threat tracks - Straight Edge, Bottled Violence, I Don't Wanna Hear It and Guilty Of Being White. For me this was a formidable challenge as I detest punk rock! Still, playing that stuff keeps me fit and I admire the sheer tempestuous energy required to churn out music at that tempo. It still amazes me that Keilan likes all that DRI, 7 Seconds, Bad Brains and Minor Threat racket but also ranks Yes, Genesis and Gentle Giant as 3 of his favourite groups. Evidently he, like you, has a far wider taste in rock / pop music than I do!

Happy 4th of July, Scot! You’re the man! Cool show spotlighting our fine country. Loved the Prog and indie-type rock choices as well. Working in record stores for decades enlightened me to the pleasures of GBV, Pavement, etc. All great stuff that open minded proggers should give a chance, a glance askance, AND a listen to. 🫡 Your pal and mine, The Demented Cementhead, Rockhead, Blockhead Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS.

Happy 4th July. A lot of us here in the UK are hoping we'll have our own reasons to celebrate it in times to come. Politics aside, here are some of the albums from American artists you didn't mention that I've treasured over the years. If they're not strictly prog, they certainly share its ethos. Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends Daryl Hall & John Oates - Abandoned Luncheonette, War Babies America - America, Homecoming, Hat Trick Isley Brothers - 3 + 3 Tubes - Remote Control Bourgeois Tagg - Yoyo Throwing Muses - Hunkpapa To say nothing of the pleasure James Taylor, Laura Nyro, Stephen Stills, Brian Wilson and a little-known duo called Becker & Fagen have brought me since I got my first record player on Christmas Day 1966. These people, and others too numerous to mention, have done your country proud.

Nice variety! It's awfully hard to pick favorites for me, but as for a small selection of American artists (separated into prog and other genres for the sake of making it easier on me): Prog: Octavarium (Dream Theater), Lateralus (Tool), V (Spock's Beard), V: The New Mythology Suite (Symphony X), Terraformer (Thank You Scientist), Promised Land (Queensryche), Second Nature (Flying Colors, yes it's got Neal and Mike in it but I say it counts separately enough), The Joy of Motion (Animals as Leaders), The Afterman (Coheed and Cambria, both discs because I couldn't choose), Frances the Mute (The Mars Volta, yes I'm counting them, I know they moved to Mexico at some point but they were founded in El Paso so that's good enough), and to finish on a sort of obscurer note, Feathergun (Rishloo). Other: Boston (Boston), An Evening With John Denver (John Denver), Master of Puppets (Metallica), Crystal Planet (Joe Satriani), Van Halen (Van Halen), Death of a Bachelor (Panic! at the Disco), Blurryface (twenty one pilots), Blackbird (Alter Bridge), Time Out (Dave Brubeck Quartet), and Head Hunters (Herbie Hancock).

Great list! Wondered which Kansas album you would talk about...nice call with One Size Fits All, like his jazzier albums like that and Hot Rats, of course. Interesting no Utopia made the list... Ra is a pretty solid one or Todd Rundgren's Utopia. The Bears were amazing, essentially an extension of the fantastic regional band The Raisins (and after The Bears Psychodots).

My American favorites! 1. Todd Rundgren's Utopia (1974). You got that right! Full throttle prog, and the 30 minute "The Ikon" became, for me, the prog equivalent of a counterculture white magic mass that guided me on my metaphysical journey even before I knew I was on one! 2. Desire Caught by the Tail by Adrian Belew (1986). You got that WAY wrong! I thought The Bears (two albums 1987-1988) were the ultimate commercial sellout. I didn't even know they existed when I went to see Adrian Belew and they were the concert. One of the few acts I walked out on. But Desire Caught by the Tail was an American experimental masterpiece. 3. Song for America (1975) by Kansas. You picked the debut-- which has three mighty prog epics-- but I prefer the three epics on this album: "Song for America," "Incomudro (Hymn to the Atman), and "Lamplight Symphony." Kerry Livgren was national treasure during this period. 4. Fountains of Light (1977) by Starcastle. The most epic of all their three prog albums, if only because they ran all the songs together! 5. Mantras, Beats, and Meditations (2014) by MC Yogi. American hip-hop about the love of metaphysics! 6. Blows Against the Empire (1970) by Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship. An American hippie spills forth a concept album where his family escapes the clutches of Gov. Reagan and Uncle Sam's right wing repression and heads to a planet unknown for a utopia of personal liberty! What's more American than that! 7. Illinoise (2005) by Sufjan Stevens. How could you skip this American masterpiece? I know you mentioned it before. A blend of prog, folk, and minimalism! 8. Are You a Dreamer? (2005) by Denison Witmer. A folkie indie album that I consider a companion piece to Illinoise. Brilliant from start to finish. And Sufjan plays on it no less. 9. Intergalactic Trot (1973) by Stardrive. What's more American than invention and this album invented the polyphonic synthesizer five years before we would hear Wakeman play one on Tormato! 10. I Know You Know (1974) by Meg Christian. An incredible singer-songwriter album that helped kick off the women's movement in recorded music, a stronghold of the LGBT scene. 11. Tapestry (1971) by Carole King. Nothing can be said that hasn't already been said about this album. 12. Leftover Wine (1971) by Melanie. The American hippie answer to gentle-singing Donovan was the tornado-intensity of Melanie's wailing. "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" was her take on Woodstock where she appeared as a virtual unknown but soon rose to international counterculture acclaim. 13. Mother's Spiritual (1984) by Laura Nyro. The classic cult artist whose fame mainly came as the songwriter for hits by other people in the late 1960s: "And When I Die," "Stone Soul Picnic," "Wedding Bell Blues," "Eli's Comin," and of course "Save the Country" which was a warning for America to not lose optimism in the face of fascism. But Mother's Spiritual is my personal favorite for its Goddess-tinged meditations on motherhood. 14. I Ain't Marchin' Anymore (1965) by Phil Ochs. The beloved political singer who said "Demonstrations should turn you on, not off!" Check out Anita Bryant's version of "The Power and the Glory." He would have been freaking out now with what is going on in politics. 15. Love Serve Remember (1973). What would America be without its counterculture religious prophets? Ram Dass was a Harvard psychologist turned spiritual hippie pied piper after meeting a miracle man in India, and this 6 LP set from the heyday of hippiedom is a testament to the shift from chaotic psychedelia to universalist spirituality.

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY! To celebrate I started and ended the day by playing The 4th Of July for orchestra by Charles Ives (1874-1954) whom I rate to be the greatest composer America has produced so far. I'm not normally a classical music fan but a few months one of the guys from UNIT (Colin Murrell, the sax and vibes player) recommended it to me and since then I've been listening to shed loads of works by Ives and his music really is incredible...from sweet, gentle, totally tonal works to riotous, cacophonous atonal pieces that sound bonkers and everything inbetween. The first ever atonal work was written by him - the Yale-Princeton Football Game, scored for chamber orchestra - in 1898! So my favourite American album right now is the Stowkowski recording of the Ives 4th Symphony. After that it's anything by Simon & Garfunkel.

Jazz (Bebop and fusion in particular), GBV, Zappa even that Styx album (I love it too) all are examples of pragmatism in musical form.
