It can be very relaxing…sometimes late at night I find myself fast asleep at the dining room table where I have been working on my collection, and that’s not because the material that I have been working on with was boring. But it can also be very thrilling…hunting for items at a stamp show and being excited to find something excellent for the collection…bidding at an auction and feeling the excitement when an item (usually a bigger lot or a collection) that I am interested in is coming up, and feeling anxious not to overspend because the dealers and agents around me have much deeper pockets. And then feeling very joyful when I got what I wanted. It can also make you feel anxious and frustrated…but let’s keep up the good vibes; that’s certainly what you are spreading, Mr. Silk.

You are so right about the therapeutic effect of stamp collecting - sorting, researching, valuing, arranging and displaying- perfection! I’m also keen on photography and one day it struck me that a screen full of picture thumbnails look exactly like a page full of stamps! And vice versa…

It´s well kown that philately can be a very relaxing hobby, so thanks for your great advice ! 👌 And you also got a pretty neat collection of early U.S. stamps as well, highly appreciated. Keep it up, and hope everything is going well in your new job, fingers crossed. 🤞 Greets from GER, U.

After lunch, began sorting a long neglected batch of off-paper US stamps. The next thing I know, its dinnertime. Visits to alternative worlds are good.

I agree with the therapeutic effects of even simple tasks with stamps - but put on some good music, too. My favorite used stamp is US 292 - "Western Cattle in Storm". An absolute classic.

Yes, who would have thought that fiddling around with stamps could be so relaxing? It was a nice surprise for me. Only thing is, sometimes I get a little obsessively involved and fiddle too long...which can be more tiring than relaxing. But it does clear the mind! Your State Fair entry is looking great. I suggest a one-page "key" at the beginning of the album that explains a few of the types of cancels, like the cork cancels and the precancels, and those cancels with the bars and numbers (which I just learned are also considered "cork cancels"), etc. Maybe showcase one actual stamp example to the left of each brief explanation. I think that would add to viewer appreciation as they leaf through the album. Hope the new job is going well!

Yes, collecting stamps is relaxing. And it is so different from day-to-day-life. I wonder why not more people are looking for this sort of hobby. To collect something is always relaxing and to hunt special items is also a lot of fun. I like both. From USA I like the Omaha exhibition set and my favourite stamp is same as you the orange 4 cent. Many say, the 1 $ with the cows is the nicest, but I prefer the 4 cent stamp with the native indian hunting a buffalo. This is classic Wild West, I love it. On the other hand I still have many cows where I live in Germany. Besides this USA has a lot of real fascinating stamps especially showing nature. Really great. I collect every country til the 1950s. Some of the modern stamps as well, if I like them. But I focus on the older ones, because they show a lot of topics/people which were interesting somewhere from 1840 -1950 (in my case).

What a wonderful collection for submission. At the beginning of the video you scanned around the albums you have on your shelves which made me salivate. What a cool library of albums you have. To digress a bit, I won a trophy for the best display in the new commer section of an exhibition. I felt elated. The exhibiting committee had then to change the rules to state that if there was only one entry in any category, (which mine was), then no commendations would be given. That's life.......

Now that you mention it, I decided to keep an American banknote. It's a State of Florida $2 note 1858 - this is when there are pen signatures and pen serial numbers! The note i am keeping is nice condition but the special bit is the second serial number top right of note that has the last number crossed-out; top left reads 4384... top right 4383 and you can see the 3 crossed-out and a 4 as near to it as possible, clear as day. Probably at some desk, in time and space, right?!

Hey! I just found one of your stamp cards with a 5-cent Columbian Exposition in a box of stamps from Stamps for the Wounded! Not sure if you donated or one of your viewers did but it was much appreciated and it filled an empty space in my collection! Thanks! Very much agree on the therapeutic value of sorting and organizing stamps. Good luck on the display - you have built a beautiful US collection, especially the cancels! Love the steelcase file cabinet storage system lol - I use Ikea shoeboxes :)

It is therapeutic going through a pile of stamps; and you never know what you might find, even when the stamps appear to be of low value. The coil pairs you pulled out at 1:10 - 1:20 are an example. They appear to be Scott 391 and 393 (perf 8 1/2) which are of a much higher catalog value than the other stamps that were visible in the bag.

Those are nice and usually my stress level does go down when going through a new lot of stamps. Though recently I tried organizing a few hundred stamps from the far east. Having to identify the Republic of China, People's Republic of China, the different Chinese territories (with their multitude of different overprints), Japanese, North Korea, South Korea and all the different occupation stamps was enough to put this collector from the West in new levels of stress. So, I guess it all depends on what you're sorting. And I have to ask, have you ever thought of using Steiner Pages to put stamps on?

Let me tell you a bit more about your 6c Madison Sq cancel, I noticed it is also perfinned MLI/Co. Which is Metropolitan Life Insurance of NYC Perfin style M164 used between 1917 and 1933 and value rated "F", or fairly common. If next year you wanted to knock the socks off the judges, find some Minnesota precancels with various perfins such as the initials MP/Co ( Minnesota Paper Co ) only available on Wash-Frank heads 1914 to 17 and so far only on 1 to 6c stamps. OR even an M/STL on the perf 11 1923 1.5c which is The Minneapolis & St Louis Railroad. And further include a fair number of the 1894/5 series with Minneapolis Precancels Type L-1E. I have one that is a colored cancel, inverted and carries a value of $75 Very nice and vary clean. BTW if your interested in overloading yourself with US Used, I have a USPS Large Box stuffed which as soon as I get pix will be on eBay. must weigh close to 8 lbs. Happy Collecting, and BTW come join our stamp collecting group on GAB Social, we need more input there too.

Hi Silk, thanks for sharing your album of used US stamps. What is your approach to mounting them? I see some mounts and some appear to be hinged. Also, did you rob your Davo album, or are these surplus stamps?
@silkontheweb4 ай бұрын
Nope! Those are extras... and a lot aren't in the best of all shape. For these I mostly used mounts for the pricier stamps, and hinges for the rest... bit of a hodge podge result

you forgot the MOST important thing, the F***ing cost of the Scott's albums or Catalogs a freeking $100 for the US Specialized alone. and nigh on $1000 for the world. Thats why I quite US stamps for perfins and Precancels as well as Perfinned Precancels.
