Great to hear your thoughts on one of the most compelling characters in fantasy, Johanna! Jaime is a great example of the William Faulkner quote that George R.R. Martin is fond of: "The only thing worth writing about is the human heart in conflict with itself."

I love that quote, and Jamie's internal conflict is perfectly captured in this book! Thank you for sharing that, and thank you so much for watching, Philip!

Jamie is such a great character, and I’d never thought about him as a study for how we mask pain. Thanks for this Johanna.

Thanks, Chas! The laugh might not always run that deep, but I think it does at times. I suspect he is severely traumatized from having watched Aerys in action, and to have been an enabler as a knight of the Kingsguard. I can’t imagine not being traumatized by that. 😣

Jamie is by far the most well-adjusted of Tywin’s children in my opinion. Really love the character and his arc too!

That’s an interesting thought! I think he found ways to cope, but there’s clearly a lot going on under the surface.

Great analysis! Reveal or Redeeming? "Why would the stars want to look down on such as me?" I think it's an interesting question for start, because I believe here both aplies. But it could be said that there's a certain point were the redeming arc begins and that one I think is when he catch up with the writes of the white book. I think its the point were he begins to take the right decisions( I love when refuses on Cersei in the White tower; delivers Oathkepper on Brienne with the task of the search and protect Sansa; when defends Brienne(""You are speaking of a highborn lady, ser. Call her by her name. Call her Brienne.""); and when finally rejects on Cersei(""No," he said. "Put this in the fire.""). Of course when he saves Brienne it's an important moment, but how he gets to that ("I dreamed of you") shows details, which I don't know if I can explain completely well... It's how that feverish dream ends up revealing his trauma of not being able to save Elia and her children (Rhaegar, Cersei abandoning him in the darkness, Brienne with the blue fire sword), I mean I see it as a kind of reminder of something he should have done and how that takes him to make the decision to return to save Brienne.

I love your thoughts on this! Of all the characters that Martin could've chosen to shift Jamie, Brienne couldn't have been more perfect. I love the details you shared about the fevered dream because getting Jamie's perspective/action from point a to point b (even returning to the trauma) felt so convincing. Every moment and detail adds up to believable shifts and character arcs.

I hope you and Allen can rekindle the friendship since his 10k milestone. 😂. The chemistry between the two of you is pleasant to watch and the conversations have never failed to be anything less than engaging. Not to mention your way of speaking in this melodic way…You’ve a gift…or maybe it’s the PHD? lol. I really hope you never stop uploading. You deserve 10x the amount of subs that you have now. Nevertheless, I’ll be looking forward to the next video and hopefully more discussions with Allen in the near future. 😁. P.S. You’ve become my favorite booktuber since the algorithm blessed me with one of your videos a few days ago. Keep up the great work!

Look, I've been loving all your ASOIAF related content, but I think this might be my favourite video yet. I totally agree with everything you said, Jaime quickly became my favourite as well and I totally wasn't expecting that. I mean, I knew I enjoyed his character from the show, but I found him to be so much more compelling in the books. His dynamic with Brienne is one of the absolute highlights of ASoS, which is saying a lot considering the fact that that book is filled with greatness from start to finish. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, I loved this!! :)))

Wow, thank you so much, Esmay! I’m so happy to hear your experience of Jamie and how you connected with him as well! I feel so passionately about his character and think Martin was briliant in pairing Jamie with Brienne. Martin didn’t make his job easy by presenting Jamie as so deplorable at the start. I’m still in awe of all the details that go into shifting that perspective. It means so much to me that you loved the video! 🥰

Great video! Would love to see more stuff like this with other characters and series. Maybe you’ve already done that, though! I’ll have to go check. Anyway, I was surprised by how my feelings about Jaime changed in A Storm of Swords. I never expected to have empathy for him! Looking back, I think Martin’s detail with each character is one of the best parts about ASOIAF.

Thank you so much! Actually, this is the first character deep dive I’ve ever done on my channel. I felt so passionately about Jamie on this reread that I just had to do one. Martin did not give himself an easy task getting readers to feel empathy for Jamie, but he hit a homerun with every detail. I apprecitate it!

Thank you, Andrew! I agree that Martin is peerless when it comes to character work. I still can't believe how many details he added to Jamie's character arc alone, but then there are so many additional characters woven into the narrative.

What a fantastic video, Johanna! Jaime, amongst many of the characters in this story, has stood out to me as well on my first read through. I have had so many conflicting thoughts throughout the first 3 books regarding my feelings towards him. For a while I think I was preventing myself from "liking" him because of the horrendous and dishonorable actions he's made in his past, but I feel myself almost giving in to pulling for him even though I don't know if i want to! It's amazing what Martin is accomplishing with Jaime.

Thank you so much for watching, Colin! It's brilliant how many details blur that line between the either/or, good or bad assessment. Jamie is one of the most complex characters I've ever read in that regard, and Martin really is a genius!

I like to think Brandon Stark personality wise would have been a lot like Jaime, sort of a smug prick you couldn't help but love anyway, playing pranks on his siblings etc. but acting like "a bit of a dick."

Completely agree on this. Jamie is probably the character that has the most nuance and goes through the most changes. Hound as well. The rest, while still engaging, are pretty much the same on page 1 as page 1000. Sansa and Arya would be exceptions but the former is not done as well and the latter not enough page time. Thinking about this more, Martin seems to devote more attention to his 'villains' than his 'heroes'.
@Johanna_reads
@Johanna_reads Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Eric! The Hound would also be a fun character to explore, but I'm honestly in awe of just about every character in this series even if some are not as morally gray as Jamie. Interesting point about where Martin places his attention!
