Ah, stollen is a traditional German Christmas bread. It has been made in the Saxony region of Germany since at least the 15th century. My oma (grandmother) would bake it every Christmas. Delicious!

I immigrated from Germany to the US with my parents in 1960. Stollen is a German fruitcake. I have eaten all my life. Absolutely love it with hot coffee. We generally sprinkled powdered sugar over top of it or a powdered sugar icing. I am tickled that you are making a German recipe! It is pronounced like first time you said the name at the beginning of this video. 'stol-len' Thank you Tipper for sharing!

When my mother was first married at age 15, she used an old magazine to save recipes that people gave her. She glued or taped the recipes onto the magazine pages so it became her recipe book. This was around 1951 or so, in Coffeyville, Kansas. Your stollen looks delicious!

Stollen, yes! I didn't experience this in my part of Appalachia, but a relative with German roots used to make a stollen at Christmas, and she'd make a couple and freeze ahead of the season. Very delicious! Oh, and yes... I learned the grated butter hack earlier this year. Who would've thought? :) Perfect. Love your channel.

Merry Christmas! Stollen is a German bread. My family makes it every year, and has for generations. I make my own candid peel to put in the stollen. My family makes multi stollen loaves, and then one is saved to have for breakfast Easter morning. My German grandmother told me traditionally the finished stollen is to resemble a baby being wrapped in a blanket. My family soaks the dried fruit in rum or orange juice over night before putting it in the bread. Thanks for sharing your family's version of this bread!

My husband and I love you, Matt, and the girls! I'm going to try your Christmas bread, but also wanted to share a German stollen recipe that I have made for years; my family enjoys it and I hope you will try it. Wishing you all a blessed Christmas from Waco, Texas! Bread: 1 pkg. (2-1/4 tsp.) dry yeast 1/4 c. lukewarm water 2/3 c. milk 1/2 c. butter 1/4 c. sugar 1 egg 1/2 tsp. almond extract 1/2 tsp. salt 3-1/4 to 3-1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour 3/4 c. slivered almonds, toasted 1 c. golden raisins or dried fruit of choice 1/2 c. halved candied cherries or candied pineapple Powdered sugar icing: 1-1/2 to 2 c. powdered sugar 2 to 3 drops almond extract Enough milk, half & half, or cream to make a good drizzling consistency -- In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside. -- In a saucepan, scald milk. Add butter and sugar; stir until butter is melted and sugar is dissolved. Cool to lukewarm. -- Beat egg and add to the cooled milk mixture, along with the dissolved yeast, almond extract, and salt. Stir in 2 c. flour and beat until smooth. Stir in almonds, raisins/dried fruit of choice, and candied cherries/pineapple. Next, add remaining flour and mix until smooth (I let my KitchenAid stand mixer do the work, lol). Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1-1/2 hours. -- After dough has risen for 1-1/2 hours, punch down and knead on lightly floured surface. Pat dough into about a 12 inch circle or oval shape on a greased or parchment lined baking sheet. Brush the top with melted butter and let rise 1/2 hour in a warm place. -- Bake stollen on a lightly greased baking sheet in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until light golden brown. -- Mix the icing ingredients together and drizzle over the warm stollen (we pronounce it just like "stolen").

Growing up during the 50's, my mother would make Stollen during Christmas time. Our home was heated by radiators which made the room cosy. She would use the lukewarm radiator to rise the dough. My wife's step-dad was an 'old hardheaded German' as a buddy of mine said, and he always made a stollen, with a long 'O' as in something swiped or run off with. It was right good but I remember years ago that I helped my mom make fruit cakes. I got to mix stuff and pick out nut meats out of shells and clean the bowls which was the best part. Then actually got to eat some after they were done. That is some good eating so get some for me with some black coffee that you have to strain the beans out with your teeth. My A1C frowns on the treats. Thanks again and God Bless Yall!

My other grandmother (not from N.C., she came from Austria) used to make this... She pronounced it "SHTOH-len". Her's wasn't very sweet except the powdered sugar coating on the outside. She put dried tart cherries, raisins, almonds (sometimes pistachios), almond extract or almond liqueur, and, instead of lemon peel, she used grated orange zest. I didn't like it much as a kid but loved it once I was older. So good with fresh coffee ❤️

Stollen is pronounced "stolen". German in origin dating back to the 14th century. It's normally a yeasted dough. The fold of the dough is made to represent the humps of the camels the wise men rode to deliver gifts to the Christ child. the fruit in the bread represents jewels and the fragrant citrus and spices I think are to represent frankincense. Everything in it symbolic of Christmas. I have made the yeasted type. it is a delicious bread no matter how you make it. Cheers, tipper, and a blessed christmas to you all.

For almost 28 years I’ve made the same Christmas breakfast. It’s a breakfast casserole that you make the night before so all you do is pop it in the oven while everyone opens gifts and has coffee. By the time we are thru with the gifts it’s done and everyone piles into the kitchen for breakfast. This year I’m changing it up, the kids are coming over on Christmas Eve for dinner and gifts this year so we will be down to 5 1/2 people Christmas morning. ( 1/2 being only 2 years old but that boy can eat!😂❤) so it will be bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns and biscuits with homemade blueberry jam.

I thought my marriage was the longest at 46 years on 12/13/22 (married at 20 years old), but God bless you for being married for 59 years! And thank you Tipper for sharing this recipe ❤

Looks delicious! I know traditionally it’s a German stollen but with the ricotta and lemon zest it’s almost Italian. Either way it looks wonderful and toasted the next day with a cup of coffee sounds good! 😋. I love your cooking videos!! Merry Christmas 🎄

You did a beautiful job making a Stollen. It’s pronounced like you did the first time except that the st has an sh sound first so it’s more like shtollen. The reason the sides don’t meet up when you fold it over is because it’s supposed to represent the baby Jesus in swaddling clothes. My German mom used to make this. You’ve inspired me to try your recipe.

I love that bread. Well, I don't have heat here in FLA. We are expecting flurries, up coming week, single digits, Florida..!!! Electric blanket, electric mattress pad, a blanket over my indoor bunnies, in their cages on my bed. I am buying a wood stove, next week. For heat and Jugging, for calfe's milk, we bottle feed 32 calf's, twice a day warm milk.

I make my scones the same way with grated frozen butter but instead of using a pastry blender I use my fingers to incorporate the butter into tiny little pea sized pieces and then I add sour cream. This bread sounds really delicious! Gonna have to try this!

Thank you so much for sharing your Stollen recipe - it looks very delicious! My mom always made German Stollen during Christmas, using a traditional yeast bread recipe and candied dried fruit, topping it with a with a glaze. On Christmas eve, we got into the car and delivered her homemade German Stollen to our family friends, after which we went to the Christmas Eve service at our church - such special memories! On Christmas morning for breakfast, my mom served the Stollen with egg nog, fruit salad, chicken wings, and deviled eggs - Yum! Thank you once again for sharing another delicious recipe!

Tipper, I just made this today and I’m so excited to try it later. I grew up having traditional German Stollen sent from relatives from Germany every year as a child.Although I always loved the traditional kind I find it too sweet and heavy these days. Thank you for sharing this recipe. I so enjoy your channel and your sweet family. Merry Christmas!

Sounds and looks delicious! I have German friends and they make it but their cakes are always a little bit dry so I’ve not been enticed to bake this. Yours looks and the sound it made while you were cutting it has made me change my mind

You make this recipe look so easy and sounds delicious, we need to try that this holiday season and I want to try your roll recipe too. You never know what treasures you will find at a yard sale or a thrift store. I always enjoy looking to see what I can see even if I don't buy anything, kitchen items or hard to find books out of print even. Wow! You found a great bargain, more like "a steal" at 50 cents, in that pastry cutter, OXO makes really good products; all of their items are well made, well thought out products, I have always thought. Thank you for this recipe.
