I have a strong tendency to play Kobolds of varying classes. I enjoy being small and frail, or just small and stupid. I ran this Kobold Cleric girl for YEARS with one group, and she became like the divider in the group. Because they were all evil alligned, while she was neutral. And everyone liked her. Which created the whole "Protecc the 'bold" feel for even the evilest of the group, this old human necromancer-focused wizard. It's great to be cute and loveable in a group of evil people, because then you can see that they are not that evil after all. Kobolds are the best.

Maybe the reason that humans are so common is that they're the easiest to identify with immediately. It can be hard to picture yourself as a halfling or dragonborn, but you know what you look like, so you can just think, "me in armor! Yay!" and that's easier to have fun with.
@brosephnoonan2237 жыл бұрын
Max Pierce it also helps that humans are VERY strong. +1 to every stat can mean a lot for someone who rolls high on stats allowing them to gain lots of hard stat advantages, or low on stats to help mitigate the disadvanges the dice gods tried to force on you. While the +1 to two isnt awful, and the starting feat can be GAME BREAKING. A level 1 fighter with sentinel and tunnel fighting means they have unlimited opportunity attacks, and any creature they hit with an opportunity attack has its speed reduced to 0. Combine this with any REACH weapon and its busted, you can prevent most enemies from getting into melee with you by spending your reaction to take an opportunity attack on any creature that moves within your melee range, OR you can put a complete STOP on enemy retreats. They will be completely unable to disengage with you, because sentinel allows opportunity attacks EVEN if they uses the disengage action. The same is true for a Monk with either mobile or mage killer. If you're a mobile monk, at level 1, no body will be able to touch you or catch you. Run in, take a swing, back off. If you're a mage killer, once you have ki you can stunning strike a mage whenever they cast a spell, preventing the cast of the spell and leaving unable to anything for the rest of their turn. Plus, with the amount of attacks you get you can DESTROY their concentration. A ranger or a ranged fighter woth Sharpshooter gain +10 to damage and with the Archery fighting style and 16 dex, you effectively trade your fighting style and dex attack bonus for +10 damage. You'll tear apart most enemies with this. Plus, you won't have any real limits on your range with those attacks, so don't be afraid to fucking snipe dudes off at 300 feet off if you can.

The human variant is definitely why most people go with the human. I've only seen one player pick the +1 to all stats and that was only because he didn't have the PHB and didn't know about the variant. Also, you probably just got a lot of player characters killed. Because anything the player can do the NPCs can do as well. :D

Max Pierce I honestly prefer Tieflings, Drows, and Dragonborns over most races. Human is too bland for me.
@oOPPHOo6 жыл бұрын
Humans are common because they are versatile. I'm pretty sure they are designed as versatile to explain why they are so common in your average DnD setting. People tend to think "I wanna play a specific class". No matter what class they think of, the human variant will mechanically always be a valuable pick. It's basically as if they human has as many subraces as there are feats and that matters. Just watch out. Recently, UA released a bunch of infernal tiefling subraces tied to each arch devil. With different stats for each tiefling, you can now make a tiefling optimal for pretty much any class as long as you're fine with playing a specific subrace. That's gonna increase the popularity of tieflings because suddenly they are opened up to people who wanna play a specific class. The variant human definitely is strong, but I'm pretty sure it's the fact that it's so versatile that matters the most.

Okay, speaking of Classes in D&D - I have to admit, I never played Dungeons and Dragons, and only had two lukewarm RPG-Sessions during the last two Months. Pen & Paper RPGs weren't well known in my Country until a couple Years ago, so it's hard to find Poeple to play. So, as I said, never played Dungeons & Dragons, so I have a dumb Question, that probably is even dumber to any Veteran Player: Where the fuck is the Difference between a Wizard, a Sorcerer and Warlock? I mean, in Game Terms. You said in the Video, Warlocks are more about Social Manipulation and Stuff, but more than that, I don't know, as I don't really get the Magic System yet and hadn't had the Chance to get physical Rulebooks; let alone read about the Differences. Adding to that, my native Language (German) makes it a bit hard defining a Difference between the Words "Sorcerer" and "Wizard", as they mean the same Word in German - "Zauberer". And even "Mage" - "Magier" in German - is just a Synonym for Zauberer. tl;dr Sorcerer, Wizard and Mage are - to me - the same things. Only Exception is "Warlock", wich gets translated to "Hexenmeister" - literally meaning "Master of Witches", so I would assume, a Warlock is more about summoning Demons and/or Minions and cursing Poeple, adding to his Feats of Social Manipulation and Disguise. Please Help. D:

(players in my campaign: on the off chance that you find this, you are not allowed to read it.) Well, I am the DM of this campaign, and my party is very small, so I have my own character. I presented him as someone who is there to fill out the ranks, give support to the rest of the party, and provide guidance from behind when they need it, but in actuality he is the main villain of the campaign who implanted himself in the party from the start. People think of Aasimar as nice and of bards as harmless, but I'm planing for my guy to be a major threat to the party through subterfuge and misdirection. The party would beat him in an all-out fight, so he's not gonna GIVE them an all-out fight. Also, it's up to the party to figure out, "oh, this guy is why so many NPC have been randomly dying on our journey." They're gonna just have the main villain giving them buffs until then. Also I had way too much trouble giving him an alignment. He legitimately believes that killing everyone in the world is the right thing to do because it ends all suffering, but basically anyone else would see that as evil. I put him as lawful neutral even though that still doesn't feel right because there's a paladin in the party and I don't want him found out too fast. And he's lawful even though bards are generally on the chaotic side of the spectrum because he has a pretty simple code of ethics: "everyone must die for their own good." So yeah, party member bard villain trying to do the "right thing." Very excited about him and hope I don't flub it too bad.

It's easy to see why people choose human; they're one of the best races. There's the aforementioned mechanics, but it also is the fact that they're designed to be able to fit any role and role play. I think this is still leftover from when Gary Gygax used the mechanics of the rules to basically force people in a certain world. Namely a world where the Age of Men was about to or just started. The other races were declining. It's *their* ruins and dungeons you're exploring. Anyway, in my current campaign I'm running my first fighter ever (Dragonborn). It's pretty fun and helps speed combat along. In the battle I expect to be the toughest I output an average of 44 damage. Well above the rest of the party and a good chunk even if the heavier enemies are the moment. Next level that will rise to 88 (Though now only once). Though I have to admit, being a Dragonborn isn't as great as I thought. I don't get darkvision, no blindsight, my breath weapon kinda sucks, no bonus to AC... Edit: recently I had played a 3 part 1-shot (yeah I know xD) where I was a Hobgoblin necromancer and coroner of the Lord's Alliance named Grak Boneweave. It was too short to really get a feel for the race, but the group was more RP heavy than my current one (all but me and my buddy; the DM are total noobs, so can't fault them for it) so playing what used to be a monstrous race was fun.

In terms of Pathfinder, One time I played a Gnome Bard named Mavin, the Story Teller...his gimmick was to tell stories of his adventures or even ancient history. In the campaign, he was literally the ONLY Gnome in existence, so he was given a second Title "The Fey Bard" (Funny thing about the Second Title, Because of it no one else knew my real name. They just knew me as "the Fey Bard"), I was so easily recognized that I actually had to disguise myself just to avoid civilians. I gave him the tone and accent of an old Irishman, when disrespected, He goes into rants like "I lived three of your lifetimes you little brat" or "Respect your elders, do you want to be part of one of my bad stories?" Then came to combat, he basically use his voice to echo through the field to confuse his enemies and inspire his allies, (Favorite part was the crowd control aspect of the bard). Long story short, he had an answer for almost any situation that did not relied on violence. GM even loved the character but one of our players hated him and tried overstepping into my role on multiple occasions. If I ever find myself in another campaign that needs a support class, I will definitely bring him back in.

In my sessions, I've had only **ONE** human (played by the same guy who just refreshes his sheet to lvl 1 stats every time we play instead of being original and making a new character >_>), the rest are always dragonborn, elf, or some random race from the other hand books (we use all 3 4e hand books including eberron)... then the classes that were common were barbarian/fighter, wizard, BARD (one guy plays literally only that every time as well [no not the human character]), and a paladin...

I mean unless it contradicts the setting of the campaign, let the players play what they want. I myself play a lot of Humans and Dragonborn (even though Dragonborn are incredibly underpowered, I just like them), but it's always because that's what the character calls for.

I also made a tier list of how I prefer classes. Tier 1: Druid (my personal favorite) Bard (Fun to roleplay and keeps players invested in their own characters) Paladins (I hate barbarians, so whenever I want to play someone who hits hard, the Paladin is who I turn to) Monk (They're really cool when described "martial arts-ing" the opponents. Tier 2: Ranger (Fun, but I don't see much that's particularly notable) Cleric (Interesting concept. I've never played one.) Sorcerer (I enjoy them and their character motivations) Fighter (same as Paladin, but I think Fighters are easier to use) Tier 3: Rogue (I think they're just too easy to play) Barbarians (I think it's hard to deviate a barbarian character's personality from "I'm big and I just hit things") Warlock (I've never played one, but 2 spells seems SUPER difficult Wizard (Maybe your CHARACTER studied for years for magic, but I think YOU get lots of spells for such little effort compared to other classes that have a much more limited selection)

I like playing races against type. I loved playing as an half-orc wizard. He was actually quite intelligent, but when he was in town he would refer to himself in third person and just let people think he was the typical dumb brute because those people would under estimate him when he started shooting lightning bolts and fireballs. The only races I never played were Gnomes and Halflings.

I don't get people who play humans in a fantasy RPG. I'm not angry or judging or anything, I just don't get it. (Unless you're a min-maxxer and want that sweet +1 to every stat. I get that.) The only time I wanted to play a human was in my friend's homebrew campaign where humans were the half-breed offsprings of orcs and elves.

blueskyscribe I get what you’re saying, it’s a fantasy game, why not be a fantasy race? I think some people choose human to play an alternate-fantasy version of themselves, do things they can’t/won’t do in real life y’know?

I've only played a few classes, but Wizard and Monk are at the top for me, with Cleric close behind. My current (and actually first, I just haven't gotten to play him for real until now) character, Malvedar the Dragonborn Wizard, is heavily built around support and debuff. His only spell that deals direct damage is Firebolt, while the rest are either utility, like Unseen Servant, Mage Hand or Alarm, or debuff spells like Sleep and Color Spray. I've also recently made a new character I really want to play sometime I named Motzu. He's a kobold artificer who I thought of playing like an alchemist plague doctor, always wearing a mask so no one knows what he looks like. He also introduces himself as "I'm Motzu, I'm doctor". Not because he has a doctorate, but because Motzu means doctor in draconic. As you might have guessed, I'm a bit of a sucker for support classes

Okay, my first ever DnD character was a Dwarven pothead (Wizard Weed, we always call it in game) named The Improbable Sir G. It was a very lighthearted campaign, so he fit right in. Towards the end of the second or third session I attended, Sir G fell into a pit trap, breaking his legs and seriously injuring himself. He took out his bag of dank wizard weed, packed his finely crafted dwarven pipe, lit up and pretty much said "whelp, I guess I live down here now". The other characters were all saying "Don't you want us to rescue you?" and "we could pull you out with a rope!" I steadfastly remained in the pit trap, getting happily stoned. Sir G was an improbable man, indeed. (I did this 'cause I wanted to kill him off, I was just starting and wanted to try different characters)

In 3rd edition, human fighter was a really strong combination. Humans got a free feat and could multiclass without worrying about XP penalties, and the fighter class was all about extra feats and had a bunch of them for free at first level. It was entirely possible start one level in fighter and then switch to playing in your "real" class after that; with the ability to wear any armor, use shields, and have a ton of options for weaponry with pretty decent starting HP. Sure, you'd always be one level behind a straight class character, but that one level bought you a lot of flexibility and made it easier to qualify for quite a few prestige classes. Honestly, fighters were only as boring as the feats they chose. A fighter spec'd in sunder or bullrushing with a sledgehammer was a whole lot different than a fighter that bought a spiked chain and tripped everyone in a three mile radius. They could also make really great ranged characters as well, rivaling rangers if built that way.

I know a guy who once played an entire campaign as a bear, but he had such a high deception that everyone around him would make a check and, if they failed, they would think he was normal and go on with their day. Eventually, everyone the bear met FAILED their check, to the point where the DM sighed when he had to roll the deception check. Then, in one hilarious twist, this bear had won the respect of the king and was about to be KNIGHTED when the guy who was supposed to be knighting him SUCCEEDED THE CHECK. So, he saw that he was a bear, and yelled and pointed and did all the general things you would do when you see a bear in the castle grounds. But, because the king liked this bear so much, and failed his check so badly, he had the guy put into the castle dungeons for false accusations and for being insane.

I've seen so many elves and half elves before I started playing DnD myself that I refused to play the race (still haven't, but maybe one day if the background fits the character). First was a gnome wizard and second was a half orc paladin. I didn't want to do human or elf for my first plays since I wanted something different from what I see every day. Wanted to have fun with different characters to make roleplay interesting.

weird druid and bard are my favorites but that aside if you ever really want to try something different race wise it's pretty easy to put player levels on to an npc CR one or lower and still convince your DM it's fair, of course just using the base stats as a starting point instead of rolling or point by and rest of the stat block can just be your race features I tried it with a pixie it was pretty fun
@birdlord42102 жыл бұрын
Based off of personal experience being a human fighter is a good starting character for people first jumping into D&D because humans are a lot more familiar to new players than other races(because that’s the race the players is) and fighter because it doesn’t have any complex mechanics
@synashilp4 жыл бұрын
I also played human fighter for my first character. It's a boring, but reliable race-class combo. Humans in general have been a pretty good race to pick due to their ability to fit into any class, especially in 3.5e/Pathfinder 1e where that extra feat put them ahead of their feat progression compared to other races. Fighters are a good pick because they can be customized to be experts in any area of combat. Plus, they're both simple to play, so they combine to make a great "baby's first character" template.

I love playing an Eladrin Wizard. Or a high elf before Xanathar’s guide to everything. I’ve played a few other but second I would say Dragonborn Barbarian. But I play the Wizard all the time and even reuse my name. 🙊 My excuse was I never got to play it to 20th level so I’m not bored of it since I still have stuff I want to do. Last campaign we played from 1st to 16th level...so close. But I did get my demiplane and my staff of the magi. The npc Wizard was using fly on me over the negative energy plane when he was knocked unconscious. The rogue didn’t seem to mind that I might die. I reminded him that the all of the treasure from the 3 dragons that we killed was on my demiplane that only I can open the portal to. He was more concerned about me then. But thankfully feather fall saved me and then I teleported to a safe space. And the other Wizard had cast fly on me because I had cast sunbeam and I can’t concentrate on two spells at once.

Dude, that is far from a problem. I am DMing a group right now that is made up of the following: A Wizard (that has +5 in Dex and +3 in Int), a Sorcerer and Hexblade Warlock. I am constantly in fear of throwing a few brutes at them and they TPK. Literally no one got anything to heal themselves with, and even when I do the subtle (You should prepare everything you need as he will not be able to resupply when we leave) warning. *THEY STILL FORGET TO PACK MORE THEN 4 POTIONS OF HEALING WITH THEM!!!* Just kill me. Now they have to go down in the Underdark and fight an Aboleth. At least a Bard and Druid can heal the party in case of emergencies.

I haven't played as every class, but my favorite classes are Monk, Cleric and Wizard. Wizard because I love spellcasters, and Wizards have the most options for utility spells. Cleric because I have a bit of a leaning toward support casters, and I haven't gotten around to try Druid yet. And Monk because I just think it's a lot of fun, especially using Way of the Open Palm, so I can just punch out dragons with my bare hands. The next character I'm planning on playing is a Kobold Artificer specializing in alchemy, and after that I might try a paladin, either Oath of Vengeance so I can go total ax crazy and run into combat dualwielding heavy weapons, or just one massive greatsword, or Oath of Redemption, since I really like the fluff around that oath.
