as a native spanish speaker la aran~a discoteca is way funnier when you truly understand it. it's not a disco-spider in the sense of a spider who goes to the disco and owns the dance floor. but in the sense that the spider IS the disco, like the physical building. translation mistakes like that are awesome. strangely enough they did translate chang racist spanish lesson very accurately. except the explanation of "ustedes". it's not formal or informal, it's just plural. but "usted" IS formal. what surpised me the most of that translation is that they got the difference between "ser" and "estar" right.....which is quite remarkable.
@vicalonso6597 Жыл бұрын
@@sabin97 They are kind of right since in Spain "ustedes" is actually formal and "vosotros" is the informal way. But yeah, in LA we don't use "vosotros", so "ustedes" is both the formal and informal way as you said

@@vicalonso6597 they dont use spanish from spain. if you watch the show you realize that it's all american spanish, not european spanish. in america nobody says "vosotros". it's always "ustedes" regardless of formal/informal, context. so my point remains the same. they got wrong the formal/informal. but they amazingly got right the ser/estar....

Lmfao pierce's last line
@SteveBluescemi2 жыл бұрын
That last line is an example of a concept Harmon (and Rob Schrab I think?) coined: a "Monopoly guy joke". It is a derogatory term for a particular kind of hacky comedy writing, named after the joke in Ace Ventura 2 where Ace crashes a fancy party and makes fun of a guy who looks just like the Monopoly guy from the board game, with the huge mustache and tuxedo. It's a cheap joke because the punchline is merely mentioning the pointless contrivance of the setup. Setup: a man is dressed to strongly resemble the Monopoly guy. Punchline: Ace calls him "Monopoly guy". There's just no cleverness there. Here, Jeff is very conspicuously dressed with matching shirt and socks. Pierce points that out with a sort-of-joke. It's a bit more elegant than the eponymous example, but still fits the pattern.
@IRanOutOfPhrases2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, its a fineline between what Community did and what Ace Venitra did. They're very close to one another, but there's a distinct difference. Another example I think that executes this well is I Think You Should Leave. The skit where the hotdog car crashes into the store. Then Tim Robinson calls out a character whose wardrobe looks very hotdog-esque. While we're kind of laughing at the 'coincidence', it alao doubles as a funny attempt at a defense that just because Tim's character looks like a dog, it doesnt mean he was the owner of the car haha
@eduardo_moya2 жыл бұрын
Good example of it working well
@night1hal12 жыл бұрын
That sounds like some hacky shit. Not surprising though, considering how far Harmon's head is up his own ass.
@SteveBluescemi2 жыл бұрын
@@IRanOutOfPhrases I don't the hot dog sketch counts. The joke is that the guy is brazenly denying responsibility when he is obviously the guy who did it. There's no ambiguity in his wardrobe, he's literally dressed in a hot dog costume because he literally is the guy who drove the hot dog truck and everyone knows it. The humor comes from how intensely he doubles down.
