Ahhh the memories from the early 80s EXH bring back. I would find out where the parties were and set up my gear. On the floor was a Memory Man, Flanger, Proco Rat and a wah. Turn the lights off, crank the strobe light on which highlighted the thick blue smoke and then proceed to melt their brains "and mine" Probably sounded like garbage but back them it was magic.

This pedal version is the most mood enhancing one to me. There's just something about this circuit and parts design that makes the listener mellow right out when they hear it. Got rid of mine after a a local repair person fiddled with it and the mojo was never the same afterwards. Instant U2 edge tone in a box.
@bonsummers26572 жыл бұрын
Interestingly I had both the DMM and a Zoom1010 multi-effects pedal back in the 90's through 00's. I preferred the early U2 sound from the Zoom1010 over the DMM. But, maybe I just didn't have the right dialing in of the amp, and the overdrive factor being another limiting factro with the DMM. The Zoom1010 had overdrive.

This is one of my favourite pedals. I have an all analogue board with a DOD stereo flanger going to seperate amps. I put the MM before one amp and an old 1970's JHS Echorec to the other. I always have the vibrato(tremolo) on to some degree.
@arthurdib7 жыл бұрын
My DMM is from 2005ish as well. I use this for guitar as well as vocals. I insert it into the lead vocal channel and give our singer a few subtle repeats and a tiny bit of chorus. The level control is usually set to a bit above 9 O'clock which adds a hint of that old tape saturation sound on the vocals when the singer belts out a note at close proximity to the mic. Caution should be used not to over drive the level to the point where a singer looses dynamics, unless that is the effect your going for. It's really stunning how nice vocals sound with this pedal inserted into the channel. I use an extension on a simple TRS cable to extend the pedal to the feet of our singer. She has tons of fun experimenting with ambient chaos at the end of songs and just finding interesting settings to serve the song.. We also have a compressor limiter to protect our speakers because wild oscillation can get very loud and damage speakers or cause hearing damage. Now that she's heard a real, analog delay, she really dislikes the various digital gear we used previously.

These are great pedals. I have the Stereo Memory Man (analog- not the digital/Hazarai), and it sounds a lot like this pedal- but with shorter delay times and no chorus on the repeats. For short delay, I've never heard its equal.
@nickolasecker95962 жыл бұрын
I’ve tried several different pedals that emulate or are similar to the dmm, including the tc alter ego x4, tc flashback, the dmm mode on the Belle epoch deluxe, mxr carbon copy deluxe, way huge Supa Puss UA Starlight and the j rockett clockwork. I’d say that the UA Starlight is the best digital emulation, where the j rockett clockwork comes pretty close to the dmm and sounds great, features extended delay time and tap tempo (this pedal was designed by Howard Davis who engineered the deluxe memory man). Of all these though, I cannot find anything that fully replicated the magic of the original units. I briefly owned a stereo memory man, which lacked the modulation, but still had that magical, moody atmosphere. Perhaps it’s the Panosonic chips, or something in the internals, there’s just this warmth and lofi warble to the repeats that no one can seem to get right. The UA Starlight comes very close, and is arguably your best bet out of what I’ve tried. It’s tragic how expensive these have become. $500 will get you a beat up unit, you have to pay above $600 for one that doesn’t look as if it will fall apart the moment you plug in.

I find the ones with the MN3008 chip have brighter repeats than the MN3005. I have the same model, same mod from Analogman. I also have the XO with same chip, same mod. Both amazing. Still the best analog delay circuit
@bittuh4 жыл бұрын
@joesl8 he uses digital delays these days, but he started with the Deluxe Memory man back in the day. If you watch "It might get loud," you see him with one. He says, "that's the sound." I use the XO with a 40 dollar upgrade done by Analogman. Love it.
@bittuh4 жыл бұрын
@joesl8 the modded XO is the same circuit as the DMM, smaller box. The Analogman mods make it way better too. I have used many delays, and it's my analog favorite.

Hey Mr Shnobel, have you ever played any delay pedal that captured this sound? The reissues dont have the magic juice, from what I heard so far...
@ebeep7 жыл бұрын
In my humble opinion, the JRC4558D op amp is the heart and soul of the '90s DMM's. Unfortunately, I believe this post-2003 version in your demo has the "cleaner," louder, more hi-fi sounding op amp (TL072?) that makes for harsh clipping that can be heard in this video. The Analogman page (pre-store) has long since been changed given these are no longer available, but the op-amp change was noted in their product description in 2005. I believe the last production versions switched back to the use of some variety of the 4558 op-amp before this pedal was discontinued in '09. I owned 3 of the '90s DMM's and still own 2 (I didn't want to be a DMM hoarder, so I sold one), and had all of them modded for the external transformer (aka wall wart) and true bypass. BTW, the internal transformer design was noisy as hell; I was so glad to be free of that via modification! I bought one of these later DMM's from Analogman in 2005 just because this pedal is as important as my amp for my tone and I wanted to hear the difference in op-amps. Yes, it teases away the repeat from the dry signal making it more distinct, yes it's slightly more defined/clearer, but the clipping is awful, and the clipping from the DMM's JRC4558D is so amazing and essential that it allowed me to be free of my TS-808 (same op-amp for those who may not know). I sold the 2005 DMM within the year. My DMM serves as a preamp that is always on with my use of the pedal as a delay being optional. In fact, I wish I hadn't modded them to true bypass as the signal always went through the preamp with the old switching. Instead, I use the blend knob to "turn on" delay using my foot. Anyway, it's simply impossible to get a bad sound out of the '90s DMM's, but not the case with yours I'm afraid. My 2 cents anyway :) Thanks for the great video! Your tone is fantastic! Oh, and here's a fantastic example of the sound of the JRC4558 op-amp as used as a preamp via the DMM: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXe0gqmOj9hsedkm25s

@javiceres6 жыл бұрын
ebeep 4558D is a cheap run of the mill IC chip. A little variation in the input impedance of the pedal has way more effect in the sound. This being analogman modded probably has higher (proper) impedance compared to an stock DMM (of any era). It's one of the most famous analogman mods for the DMM and makes it sound clearer, or in other words fixes the issue with the standard classic DMM units sucking tone like there's no tomorrow.

It's the nature of the analog chip set. You get an exhale sort of sound on the repeats. If you're playing anyone else, you'll never hear it, but I know your frustration. You have to go digital to lose that.

Schnobel, could you please help me out with this: does the Overload LED affect the chips's life at all? does overloading the pedal with max feedback + delay/chorus/blend/level tweaking affect the pedal in a negative way? I have the EC2002 version with MN 3008s and love messing around with it. I did not know the DMM had such a good reputation till I searched around for a new one and found they were no longer sold back in 2015. Mine is stock, has occasional tune-ups. Didn't really use it much since I bought it late 2006.I think it sounds well. I experiment with all settings regularly nowadays and the Overload LED comes on almost as much as yours does throughout the video. It's so much fun to really dig into the pedal!!! (I'm sure you know this). I'm just worried that I may mess it up somehow. I plan on getting it modded once I save up. Should I worry about killing the chips b/c the pedal Overload LED is constantly on? Is the Overload LED just an indicator of possible distortion in delay repeats? I've written a lot... If you and/or anyone can give me some input, I would greatly appreciate it. Just trying to get "the tone".
