I have to tell you about joystick modules because they've changed my ability to perform expressively on synthesizers that don't have expressive keyboards or sophisticated built-in controllers. A joy stick allows the user to expressively send control voltage signals according to varying positions of a stick. You can also use it to mix up to 4 different audio signals to create morphing complex sounds from simple sources. I'm demonstrating this type of controller using the Intelijel Planar which is a relatively inexpensive Euroack solution that can be integrated into many types of setups. In this video, I've integrated it with my ARP 2600 and show you how to control filter brightness and vibrato at the same time with one hand movement. It would otherwise be impossible to simultaneously change these two parameters while playing the keyboard with your other hand (without the joy stick). I've added some efx pedals to the sound to achieve a vocal quality that pairs well with the joystick modulations. There are many more uses for this expression controller, so stay tuned for more advanced applications and musical examples in upcoming videos.

Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

Very cool!! Anthony, thanks for interviewing Dr Mix BTW! I am exactly his age as we speak. Your name sounded so familiar, but I couldn't quite place it 'till I saw your interview with him... and then I find out you were THE guy behind the sound of all those songs I listened to back in the 80's. Thanks for your channel, and especially for the Jump video. I really miss Eddie Van Halen.

Great video and a great tip. I have a lot of vintage synths, ie most all of the ARP synths, and I really appreciate any tips on how to use various modules, effects, and other devices that will improve the performance of a vintage synth. This was an excellent example. I had been planning to build my own Joystick module for my Buchla 200 modular for awhile. This video moved that project back to the top of my list! Keep up the great work! I love this channel!

Joysticks are so incredibly useful! I made one by taking an offset generator and replacing the pots with an ibm pcjr controller. It's such a fantastic, expressive module. Would love to hear more about your eurorack, specifically modules that interact nicely with your arp.

You can use the up-side down place and turn the Planar so that jacks are on top. that is how I have mine. I also have a Doepfer A-174-4, which is 3 axis (the top of the joystick is a ring that twists, giving the "Z" axis) and I got that because I wanted a joystick that has a spring and goes back to the original 0V (or whatever voltage you have dialed in its on board offset knobs). Unfortunately it does not always go back to 0V upon release, so not the one to use for precision voltages....but the thing I missed on the Planar *some times* is to go back to 0 modulation/offset when letting the joystick go...but I also wanted the "springless" joystick that I can use as an offset and just let go at what ever position I want and it will stay there, until I move it to a new position. Also, bonus points for the Planar, it is also a vector mixer/crossfader...so I kinda need to get another one at some point. Not interested in the CV recording, I can already do that with the O_C CV Recorder, so another Planar MK1 is what I want. Less hp too.

Future Retro Vectra has four joysticks. :) Kawai K1(-ii)m is still on my synth bucket list as well. I'll probably never be able to afford a Prophet VS, but the stick action is strong on that one, too.

I personally think knee bars are due for a comeback. All the organists really blazed the trail for synths, we ought to look at their setups as keyboardists and adapt some old ideas in new ways.

Anthony, a course in synthesizers would be great! I really wish a lot of synthesizer and controller manufactures would use joysticks… they are so much more expressive. Everyone seems so content with a two-wheel modulation system that is hard to control both in real time, unlike a joystick. As for ring-modulators, I have built one way back in the day, but didn’t know about the DC-coupled application of it. Nice video, love that funky sound you have! =)
