I loved hearing your views on these Laura. I haven’t read any of them which is surprising. I still really need to get to Gone Girl. Maybe if you reread it at some point I could read it with you. Could possibly be fun to do a follow up video to Dark Places. I don’t have a copy it but it’s been on my list for a long time.

Good list some my favorites are on that list and another one of my favorites is the Yellow wallpaper by Charlotte Gilman even if it’s a short story it’s always make me feel uncomfortable and sorry for the character and has a ending that I didn’t expect

A few other suggestions: Jane Austin's Emma - The first book where I truly appreciated Austin's subtle and biting wit. It's actually a very funny book, and Emma is a deliciously flawed, yet fascinating, character. I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith - an eccentric and wonderful coming-of-age story of Cassandra Mortmain. I love the book and I often recommend it to people. If you're not already familiar with it, I have a feeling you'd enjoy this. Sugar in Michel Faber's The Crimson Petal and The White. A huge, sprawling Victorian-era saga and Sugar is a formidably intelligent and capable young woman who has been forced into a life of prostitution, a life which she longs to escape. Whether you'd like this or not, I'm not sure, but I think it's a phenomenal book - and Sugar is a marvellous character - one of my all-time favourite literary characters. And one more, a book I read just a few weeks ago - We Begin At The End by Chris Whitaker, ostensibly a 'crime' novel - although it's really a fusion of genres. It switches between two different narrative povs, one of which is 13-yr-old Duchess Day Radley (that's her name - Duchess) - and wow, what a character, what a book. I loved it.

So interesting u mentioned Eminem as he has actually disowned a lot of his earlier works because of the misogyny towards women in them. He said that having a daughter (Hailie which he wrote the song "Hailie's song" for) completely changed his views towards women and that's why he won't even performed live some of his early works because of this.
@WhytheBookWins

Yeah I do like that he had spoken about that! There are songs about his mom he doesn't sing anymore either because of how harsh they are. So I admire that he has spoken out about his own lyrics.

I can't get enough of Jane Eyre. I watch or read it all winter long! Very cool video, although I will admit to not being aware of issues with Friends! It's one of my favorite shows, especially when Rachel makes her Thanksgiving truffle!
@WhytheBookWins
@WhytheBookWins Жыл бұрын
That's a funny one! My main issues are with Joey and how they make him the "cool guy" even though he treats women terribly but they play it off like he's living the life by sleeping with women and then ghosting them and it's seen as just being funny. And then he is so self righteous when Chandler kisses the girl Joey was dating, but the reason Chandler was alone with her in the first place was because Joey was off cheating on her! Ugh. That plot line really bugs me lol. Having said all that, I've seen the series multiple times so I definitely enjoy it. I just skip the episodes that I know bug me.

I'm so glad you've read My Cousin Rachel! What a phenomenal book it is, and I'm so glad you liked it. I'll hold off saying more about it in case you cover it in a later video, but I think it's a masterpiece - it's ambiguity done so well; layered and subtle and nuanced, open to multiple interpretations, like du Maurier has written a book containing multiple parallel universes coexisiting - and I think it's a book that has a lot to say about how the sexes perceive each other. It's good to hear you talk about Jane Eyre. Have you read Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys? Back in the day I always classed it as one of my favourite books, but it's been a long time since I read it. I think it's due a reread. It tells the story of the first Mrs Rochester and it is an impassioned and brilliant and angry and devastating book, giving a voice, a personality, a history, to the 'madwoman in the attic'. And a recommendation of a recent book I read - it was actually a quote from Julia Armfield that turned me onto it - the brilliantly titled, 'For Thy Great Pain Have Mercy On My Little Pain' by Victoria Mackenzie. It's a short book, virtually a novella, telling the story of two intensely religious women in the year 1413, and how they were at risk of being deemed heretics due to the religious visions they were having. It has interesting things to say about the time in which it was set and also more broadly about women in literature. I liked it a fair bit when I read it, but it's a book that's grown in stature in my mind in the weeks and months afterwards. I find myself thinking about it from time to time. I'm very glad I read it. Always great to see a new video from you, Laura - you always brighten up my day!

@@WhytheBookWins Wide Sargasso Sea actually popped into my mind when you replied to a comment I left on your last video - about Hitchhiker's Guide, and books that are adaptations of other works. Wide Sargasso Sea, while not an adaptation, is inspired by Jane Eyre and written as a prequel to it - and it was the book I immediately thought of when you left that comment. Now here you are in your next video and the first book you mention is Jane Eyre! Quite a coincidence!

One of the things I actually like about Jane Eyre is the fact that Jane refuses to be Roger's without a ring. I feel like a lot of feminists books today tend to say "women shouldn't be married because marriage chains the woman to the home" etc while in reality Marriage is quite beautiful and a sign of commitment between two people. I say this as a single person but my parents have been married 45 years and my grandparents were married 49 and over 50 respectively and they said that the key to long marriage is to know when something isnt a big deal and still go on regular dates and making time with each other and have conversations with each other. For example my dad was a pastor in a church for many years (3 different churches but all of them close or next door to where we lived) so he and my mom would always have lunch together (my mom was a foster mom and stayed at home but definitely worked looking after us) to have a conversation and apparently my Dad still calls my Mom at lunch time even though he now works as a prison chaplain.

One of my personal favorites is Lisbeth Salander. She's a troubled, complex young woman who takes action instead of moping around saying "Woe is me." She dishes out revenge in an eye-for-an-eye manner, and forges her own destiny the best she can. Oh! I have to check to see if you've done a book vs. movie comparison. Bye . . .

Well, really we're all just working through our own stuff throughout our lives, which is scarcely enough time to solve ourselves. I'm sure at the end, looking back, nothing is as simple as men vs women, black vs white, coke vs pepsi, although there are those who use those polarizing tools to their own selfish advantage. You probably would just ask yourself why people need a foil to blame, like getting leverage by pushing off from someone else that you feel opposes you. I found this hard to watch--to use your word, "cringey". But, it would be hypocritical of me to not allow you the same time I've had at least, you're clearly very smart, it just takes a lot of time to readdress all those things we take for granted that were handed to us early on. You acknowledge your own humanity and evolution, so I bet this video would look different to you in ten years, say. A good start is that those people who said those childish things, were children; and we're all a work in progress. Love your stuff, keep it coming!

This was a more vulnerable video for me to make, at least in the moments when I got more personal. I hope I don't look back and find it cringey later in life, but who knows. I don't have a men vs women view of the world and I didn't intend to come across that way in the video because I agree that life is far more complicated than whatever us vs them narrative some people have.
