Hoods have started going away on military garments due to a combination of several factors. Helmets are getting bulkier and used for mounting important equipment like nods, thermals, and electronic ear pro/ radio mics. They also catch things like grenades, or more often in training artillery sims which has caused several medical separations after having ear drums ruptured while wearing unauthorized hoodies that caught various types of training sims in them. Lastly because better face masks and hats have been getting issued so they're not as needed. That being said if I was in the arctic circle I'd probably appreciate it but even when I'm shooting in -20 on my family's land, I find hoods more annoying than helpful, but I'm also not living outside in those conditions.

@@myk153da9 it really depends on the environment you live in, but I think Massif’s level 7 is the most well rounded

Level 5 softshells are the most versatile, you can just add or remove layers underneath depending on how cold it is. Level 7 is really only useful during winter and mostly only when staying put in place, you're going to cook yourself alive if you try to hike with equipment on you while wearing lvl7, it's just too warm. It's an extreme cold weather jacket after all. Level 5 is a jacket you can use all year round.

@@CmbAdvisor I almost always have a lvl 2 grid fleece and a level 5 softshell on, that’s the best combination in my opinion. It all depends on your use case though.
