Louise Penny is amazing. Her last book was based on a quotation from the Tempest. "Hell is empty; all the devils are here." A quote for modern times.

I've read that first Wexford (need to buy the second!) and I've read The Beautiful Mystery by Penny and I really liked both of those books. I get more recommendations from your channel than maybe anyone else's! You're just so enthusiastic about these books and it makes me so excited to read mysteries!

I LOVED this!! I haven't read any of these mysteries - but I've really only just started to dip my toes into the genre! My dad is a huge mystery fan, like I may have mentioned, and I've heard him mention PD James on multiple occasions. Now I'm curious if he's read Ruth Rendl. I'm going to ask him. And add both to my (ever increasing) TBR. I'm so glad you felt inspired to do this video!

Great video! I'm planning on trying P. D. James and Louise Penny. I read Tey's Daughter of Time on recommendation from Jane from yesmissjane after she read it, and I really enjoyed it. I am going to continue with Ruth Rendell after reading her first book. Also, yay for inspector Lynley!

I have read most of the series that you mentioned. P.D. James and Josephine Tey are one of my favorites authors. I discovered P.D. James via The Murder Room and I read Josephine Tey's The Franchise Affair when I was in my early teens. I haven't read any Elizabeth George so I may consider it in the future. I am currently reading the last 2 books of Henning Mankell's Kurt Wallander books. By the way, have you read Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series?

Great video! :) I'm not sure if you have mentioned these somewhere else, but I think you might enjoy Tana French's novels. I've only read In The Woods yet, but I really loved that one :)

Thank you, Jackie! Unfortunately I think there's a bit more gore and violence than I like to see in mysteries in Tana French's novels.

I heard "anglophile" and i stopped everything i was doing! Ha ve to pick up! I love my misteries set in England..... I had previously added both Elizabeths to my tbr to try and have read a Ruth Rendell book years ago and i didn´t hate it but wasn´t a favourite, but i will try another one. I know you are big on the misteries, but i would like a vídeo on your hist-fic recs, too.

Of all of Tey's wonderful mysteries this is my least favorite. Try "Brat Farar " or "The Franchise Affair". Also " To Love and Be Wise" is great.

So many good recommendations, I'm glad you made this video :) I've been wanting to get into mysteries for a while now, and I already had Daughter of Time on my list of books to try. I think I would like cosies and the more literary ones, but perhaps not the more gruesome ones. Would Ruth Rendell be okay for a scaredy-cat like me, or should I begin elsewhere?
@katehowereads
@katehowereads 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Hanna! I am such a scaredy cat too and I actually think Ruth Rendell would be ok. Her standalones definitely seem scarier but I think the Wexford series wouldn't be too scary for you!

@katehowereads

Thank you so much! I think that it depends on what kind of a reader you are - Wexford doesn't really have to be but I've enjoyed seeing his life happen in order. I think P.D. James Dalgliesh and Amelia Peabody series don''t have to be. Louise Penny's series, Flavia de Luce, and Elizabeth George's Lynley definitely has to be read in order.

Hi, Kate. I've just discovered you and am loving your videos. Just one little teeny correction to this one: PD James was high Anglican and not Catholic. They seem similar on the outside but are in fact different. Here in the states she's be called an Episcopalian.

There is a lot of mystery writing that is really literature travelling incognito. The danger is that such writing can lure you into a magic wood from which it is difficult to exit. Who wants to read The Magic Mountain when a walk in the Ngaio Marsh beckons.

I would like to recommend Faye Kellerman to you for her Peter Decker/Rina Lazurus mysteries.....they must be read in chronological order to see the Peter and Rina's relationship flourish. If you like Death in Holy Orders, I would recommend you look at Father Andrew Greeley's Blackie Ryan series or his Nualla Anne McGrail series.
