This film definitely has the most fun tone of the series, fully embracing the colorful, adventurous spirit of the 1960s X-Men comics. From vibrant costumes, exploring character personalities, and finally gives characters other than Wolverine a chance to shine. That said, it takes plenty of creative liberties with the source material. In the original comics, the first lineup of mutants included Scott Summers (Cyclops), Jean Grey (Marvel Girl), Bobby Drake (Iceman), Warren Worthington III (Angel), and Hank McCoy (Beast). Notably, Beast wasn’t blue and furry yet he was just a regular-looking guy with over-sized hands and feet. They were all led by Professor Charles Xavier. Additionally, Charles Xavier lost the use of his legs before forming the X-Men. He also met Magneto prior to creating the team, but Magneto had no involvement in their formation in the comics. The movie also significantly changes Raven (Mystique). In the comics, she’s not related to Charles at all. In fact, she’s much older than him, having lived since the Victorian era I believe, during which she even disguised herself as Sherlock Holmes. By the time of the formation of the X-Men, she’d be closer in age to Wolverine. Some characters in the film, like Banshee and Havok, did appear in the ’60s comics, but they weren’t founding members the original team and would join later. Havok, Alex Summers, is actually Cyclops’ younger brother in the comics, while he in the movie he's the older brother. It’s definitely a looser take on the comics’ history, as the filmmakers had to adjust things to fit the timeline of the movies. Many of the characters from the 2000s X-Men films wouldn’t have been born or old enough to be part of the team during this era. For example, Scott and Jean are much younger in the earlier movies, while Bobby (Iceman) and Warren (Angel) wouldn’t have even been born yet, based on the timeline established in the 2000s films in which there teenagers. Overall, it’s a fun period film that perfectly captures the spirit of the X-Men. I’d absolutely love to see a Marvel film or show set in the ’60s featuring the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men. Nice contrast to the more modern re-imagining of these characters and teams.
@LittleGalaxyBoy5 сағат бұрын
It’s worth mentioning that Beast actually transformed into a grey, furry version of himself first before later becoming his iconic blue, furry self in the early ’70s while he was part of the Avengers for a long time. Also Charles, along with Magneto meet prior to the formation of the X-Men, same applies to Charles losing his ability to work which happened in between meeting Magneto and forming the X-Men. These three events in the film all happen together, unlike the comics.

In my opinion, the Erik-and-Charles dichotomy is rooted in the different ways we react to trauma and pain. Erik wants to gain personal power so he can make his adversaries feel the same pain he has, while Charles wants to work to minimize peoples' pain.

I feel like I say this every time I watch X-Men films, Magneto is the best Marvel Villain because you absolutely understand his point. He wants to force the world to accept what it cannot. He doesn't care how many people hate him or it kills because he sees it as a way to protect mutants from Humans. Coming from a Holocaust survivor it makes perfect sense. As we get farther and farther away from that part of him in history it gets more difficult to keep that connection but it really is integral to who he is. It is the basic foundation of why he does what he does. And it makes him not an anti hero but a villain you feel sympathy for even while you want him to lose.
@KallenSC2 сағат бұрын
Actually character of Magneto is more complicate...he care about Mutants, but he actually killed them too, so sometimes he is just a villain, sometimes he is only anti-hero, sometimes he was a Hero too. He is like a Loki of MCU, keep evolving...but Erik keep swap his character. The worst thing about he is mostly wrong with his ideas, he look normal, he got powers which could make his REAL HERO, if he would stop revenging, or protecting mutants(because many of them are evil person too) just safe random people, from criminals, real monsters of Marvel and very evil villains...most of humans could afraid much less him, and mutants. So he is reason why humans afraid mutants... because morality is social thing and no matter person is mutant or human, morality is the same for everyone.

@k.delpino11246 сағат бұрын
X-Men debuted 60+ years ago. Without a doubt, it's among the most legendary of Marvel Comics. But to tell the backstory of these characters within in the film franchise was a great idea. Because in this universe, they've been around just as long. Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Kick-A**, The Kingsman franchise) helmed this one. Casting of the characters was great especially with McAvoy as Xavier and Fassbender as Lernsherr. The building of the past for Children of the Atom with history we already know in the 20th century. Putting the Hellfiire Club on screen had been in early drafts of the first X-Men film in the 90s. Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw (cold and calculating) and January Jones aa Emma Frost (superhot) were perfect too. Part of a summer full of multiple Marvel movies along with Marvel Studios' Thor and Captain America:The First Avenger. Even with the newer MCU at the time, the X-Universe on film could stand toe to toe. Your gonna love the follow up to X-Men First Class. Believe me, it will be a union and reunion to remember.

31:45 random power facts n stats(from the comics at least) In a fight between Iron Man and Magneto--Tony modded his suit from nano-carbon fiber tubes instead of metal, so Magneto drew in the electromagnetism from Jupiter, the planet, and used it to beat Tony's ass up and down the beach they were fighting on. Magneto's whole shtick is control over the Electromagnetic spectrum, which is one of the 4 fundamental glue like forces holding the universe together. His power is basically limited by his imagination(like all the times he's weaponized his helmet to crush the skull of whatever top tier psychic or mindreader he forces it on) Moira MacTaggert, believe it or not, is also a mutant. Tho no one but her and like 3 ppl on Earth know and Moira only discovers her mutation after she dies. She reincarnates back to the moment of birth with all her original memories of her previous lives when she dies. Mystique is wayyyyy older than Professor X. She's closer to 100+ years old than she is to being anywhere near his age. She'd outlived most humans before he was born. Also due to the nature of Magneto's powers and the energy constantly running through him his aging is drastically slowed down. His origin is still set in WW2 despite it now being 2025 now in the comics Professor X--mindfried Magneto so hard that their minds merged into an almost god-level ULTRA villain named Onslaught. Pretty much killed the Marvel Universe. Prof X himself was once killed(that's right, as in just ONE of the times he's died) when Cyclops and 4 other X-Men got merged with pieces of the Phoenix force(ancient cosmic force of destruction and rebirth) and went full supervillains. Cyclops deatomized him after a , "you can stop and come home" style speech failed completely. Magneto killed a crew of Russians by lifting their submarine it of the water and destroying it so he could steal some missile warheads(hence all this submarine obsession as a redemptive arc instead of Magneto going on a self righteous murder spree) There are "multiverse" versions of Prof X and Magneto where Eric is responsible for Xavier's paralysis but in the comics, when they met, Xavier wasn't fighting Magneto when he got crippled, he was fighting an alien(named Lucifer, if not mistaken--don't--don't ask) and got crushed by debris. It just sounds better in hindsight if Magneto was accidentally responsible, tho in one version of the X-Men's multiverse, Magneto straight up speared his ass through the spine with a big ass metal rod on some, "I'm sick of yo shit, Xavier" type shtuff...this is also a Magneto that snatch Thor's hammer out of midair using his powers and wielded it like it was always his until he was defeated(they had to kill him, he was too much AND had murdered MILLIONS when he flooded New York). He also did the same to Cap's shield then referred to it as a metal discus in the most insulting and derogatory tone possible. And he wasn't wrong about it either. Outta line, but not wrong.😂 While there are a number of devices and fashion accessories that also block psychics and mind readers, Magneto's helmet is by far the most well known and most famous. So much so that Wolverine pisses in it every chance he gets. Yep. You read that right. Last but certainly not least--Founding members of the X-Men aka the First Class are Scott Summers-Cyclops, team leader Jean Grey-Marvel Girl, omega lvl Telekinetic and Telepath Bobby Drake-Iceman, jokester Hank "Henry"McCoy-Beast, supergenius Warren Worthington III-Angel/ArchAngel, billionaire prettyboy

'When Charles met Eric' a bromance Personally, I'd go for the cinema release/uncut version of The Wolverine. There seems to have been 3 cuts of that one floating around. First Class for most fun and X2 for most improved sequel. Nightcrawlers attack on the Whitehouse still being one of my favourite openings. What I found really cool about this one is that although it seems like a period movie prequel this was actually kind of what was going on in the world and period of the original X-men comics.

This is a great movie but you have to accept the continuity errors throughout the franchise. Xavier said in X1 that he met Eric at around 17 years old but they’re clearly older here. He said Eric helped build Cerebro but here it’s built by Beast alone. The origin of Magneto’s helmet also doesn’t match what was said in X1. Mystique and Xavier’s bond also came out of nowhere. Since Xavier and Eric parted ways here, the flashback scene in X3 where they recruit young Jean together doesn’t make sense. Xavier was also not crippled in that scene which only adds to the confusion.

Yeah, Sebastian Shaw in this film is a pretty big departure from his comic counterpart. The only notable thing that stayed the same is his connection to the Hellfire Club as the leader. Personality wise though, he’s got way more in common with Mister Sinister, one of the most iconic X-Men villains. Throw in a little Arnim Zola as well, played by Toby Jones in the MCU. In the real world, his portrayal pulls heavily from Josef Mengele, the Nazi scientist known for his horrific experiments on people he considered biologically unusual. Not sure why they didn’t just use Mister Sinister. He would’ve been an awesome villain to build up toward... Hopefully we'll see Mister Sinister in the MCU once we do get new X-Men films.
