Not only will Warren throw his body between his QB and giant defenders blitzing at full speed (which he does, Every time), but his ability to diagnose who to pick up… he basically has almost 180 degrees of an arc to scan in half a second, then decide where the threat is, and then throw his body in the way of it. Watching him is amazing. I love having 2 quality RB’s, but Warren has to be the feature back next year. He’s just so talented with a high football IQ

IF Warren became the feature back, I think he would lose a lot of his "pop."
@pathutchison7688Күн бұрын
@ that’s a valid point. I’d still want another back to take the role he has now. I’m not thinking 25 carries a game. I’d like to see him get 15 touches.
@NudlemanJonesКүн бұрын
@pathutchison7688 I think Warren's role is great where it is, and why he thrives. If defenses played/keyed him like they have been playing/keying Harris for much if the season (i.e., stacking the box), I think you'd see a lot more of Warren getting tackle behind or right at the line of scrimmage. He is built for gap-running and screens, and excels as a change-of-pace back, but he isn't, in my silly opinion, a "feature" back.

Russ is a pro, plain and simple. All the little pre-snap stuff, the leadership on the sidelines, the knowledge that only comes from being a veteran and having started a LOT of games in the league…. We’ve been missing this stuff since Ben retired. It gives a measure of comfort to know your field general is gonna out everyone is position to succeed.

This is the benefit of having a veteran QB. There comes a point where you have been around, done all the things, seen all the things, and you kinda get savy to the game. Russ is that guy. Lost in this is Arthur Smith. I really hope we don’t lose him and he stays and learns from Tomlin for a handful of years. This specific play is basically 100% Wilson, but it really helps that the offense has been able to be tailored towards him, and that says a lot about Smith. I think the dude is a really smart Xs and Os coach, and if he picks up a fraction of Tomlins leadership, he is going to shine as a head coach
@masonlabanna6615Күн бұрын
If he saw the blitz and cover 0 coming, why not switch Muth or Miller to an in-breaking route? We don't do enough crossing routes and right here would have been a perfect look for one. Thanks Alex
@MikeMcKee-v8jКүн бұрын
You have to remember Russ' height, he's gotta have an alley and the appropriate window both in order for an accurate throw. I too was extremely annoyed by the middle of the field usage. Brees, IMO the best sub 6'ft modern era passer, everything was designed. And he had a good O-line most years he had the most success. They built in passing windows. I don't think that's something this line could do right now and I don't think it's Russ' style. My evidence to support this, last year Sean Payton, and the entire fan base was pissed about all the check downs, he seemed to check down or run around and get sacked. Just my opinion though. Sure, more traditional higher percentage throws on third downs. What with Russ' moon ball, this might be higher percentage than a 12 yard inn. What if they rush the A gap, double rush it? And last game he didn't have that timing he has with Pickens and still hooked up on that big one.

Great analysis Alex. Thanks! Not related, but it seems to me that Russ is looking for (or at least finding) Pat whenever he needs to scramble. Do you thing they are starting to develop a Big Ben/heath Miller type of connection, or is Pat just really good at getting into open space on a scramble drill?

I'm wondering if Wilson was expecting Warren to help Moore with Garrett and that was the reason he moved Warren from right to the left side?
@greggorsag9787Күн бұрын
QBs are often made better by their limitations. Wilson had to learn to read defenses well because he is too short to be effective in today’s NFL otherwise. That’s why the red zone plays need to get him out of the pocket; he can take advantage of his judgment and scrambling abilities instead of trying to see open targets and throw the ball through a forest. Smith may be figuring this out (one successful play last week), but they’ll need all possible advantages at Philly on Sunday with Pickens out.
