I’m going to try lime juice too. I don’t recommend using just lime peel by itself because it gave too strong of a flavor to my kefir.

@@UFOBrad F2 stands for second ferment, so yes and no. F1 or first ferment is water sugar and grains. F2 you add flavor and if you want bubbles you do F2 in a closed container. Like in the video.

Regarding kombucha: instead of buying a starter culture, you can grow your own scoby with a bottle of GT's original (unflavored) kombucha and some sweetened tea. It took me about two weeks to grow it large enough to ferment successfully.

I have been making my water kefir since April here in Ireland. My family loves it. I have thrown away a lot as my friends are too lazy to do it. I also try using coconut milk to do some as I don't drink dairy milk. Google newsfeed brought your video to my phone this morning and it's awesome to watch it. Thank you and I just subscribed. First, and only time, I made water kefir I blew up two glass bottles in the middle of the night in the kitchen! My husband and I both flew out of bed thinking someone broke into the house.. it was insane. That was about 5 years ago.. I'm almost ready to try again, LOL.

That happened to us too with a second ferment of kombucha! We left a shard of glass in the ceiling as a reminder to always always burp our ferments.

It's TOTALLY my fave, too! Strawberry Lemonade (organic of course!) is totally my favorite flavor! I use the leftover bottles from Trader Joe's Ginger Beer - perfect size!

Good quality thick glass flip top bottles should not explode under natural fermentation carbonation pressure , the rubber /plastic seals will give first if well seated but will also make a mess as well . Just fridge the 2nd fermed bottles sooner than later & you can always leave at room temperature after to suit the desired carbonation as required ( dependent on sugar content & temp ) ...Cheers big ears Kevin from Australia.

I’m so excited! I just ordered. I was making kombucha for a while, but I let my SCOBY die. I currently keep kraut going, and now I’ll try water kefir. I have used milk kefir grains in a water drink, found the recipe on Earth Clinic, it uses honey, lemon, lime and sliced ginger, I let it ferment 2 days

5:32 second fermentation. Leave room in the bottle to prevent an explosion or carefully open the popper during the day. I am trying to use a much bigger container with less liquid to prevent an explosion.

I watched another video which said you should fill it to a certain line close to the top preventing less room for explosion. I would do some more research on that.

The water kefir is pretty good, besides being good for you. However, the problem is starting the process with those completely dehydrated grains. It took forever for them to begin waking up and beginning to grow. And its hot here. I bought 2 bags of that brand. My grains still don't look like the grains you have. I guess I would have had to start with fresh grains or start in the winter. I usually love all you do though.

We only use water kefir we get 4 cups of grains twice a week from ours.We can’t give enough away so we freeze them .

From my personal experience, kombucha is much stronger and kefir is a more gentle ferment. I react horribly to kombucha, but have no issues with kefir water.

I bought Florida Sun Kefir grains and they say to add molasses. But brown sugar has molasses and I might do that next time. So far I’ve made two bottles of “soda” I want to try other recipes.

I started making this a few months ago because of this video. Thank you soooooooo much. We all LOVE it. The last couple weeks the water kefir has become really thick and slimy. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I use Berkey water and organic sugar. I'm so sad. We are missing our water kefir.

I am new to your channel, but have been loving your sourdough videos. I also decided to buy water kefir grains and start that journey, but I just tried rehydrating them and after 2-3 days I have mushy grains. They are not plump like the Cultures for Health youtube video shows they should be.. any ideas?? I used 1/4 cup of organic light brown sugar and RO water to start them in a quart sized mason jar. Thank you!

Hey Lisa I'm considering getting some water Kefir grains. Whenever you start drinking water Kefir do you start Drinking a little at a time and build it up? Or is it safe enough to drink a large amount straight away? Great video watching from Northern Ireland

@@karenchakey you can let the dry on the counter if you want. If they have water when they freeze the cells will burst as the water freezes and expands.

Hi Lisa, I had a question regarding the water kefir process: when it comes to storing normal soda in the fridge, we don’t open them because it will lose it’s carbonation. I know with water kefir during its second ferment, you are suppose to burp the bottles to prevent them from exploding, but are you suppose to burp the bottles just before you refrigerate them? Should I burp the bottles as normal (every 12-24 hours) and then wait around 12 hours for some fizz to build up and then put those in the fridge without burping? Currently my bottles have been on the 2nd ferment for 48 hours. I burped them at 24. They didn’t have much fizz then, but after 48 hours the fizz was much better. I’m looking to wait another 12 to let the carbonation build up then put them in the fridge.

No need to compost the milk kefir grains - you cam just eat them. My kids love to eat them so it's hard for me to grow larger amounts of them 😁

I’m on the third day of the second fermentation for water kefir. Did everything exactly like you said, same kind of bottles, too. But mine still isnt that carbonated. 😢 what am I doing wrong? Or is it because the weather got cooler for several days, and it’s just going to take longer?

I havent had much luck with water kefir and I dont understand why. I use water from the berkey and brown sugar but my kefir wont get fizzy and the grains stay very tiny. Could they be dud grains?

I just started making the water and it was fine when I rehydrated the grains for the first batch that I threw out. It's see the grains grew but then it seemed like the minute I put them in the second batch of water they look like sand they are not growing. It has been 2 days. I tasted it it still tastes sweet so I dumped it out and so I put them in a new batch. maybe I am not letting the water cool enough? My house is usually a fairly cool house but we have been hot here in California it's been about 73 in the morning and up to 77 in the afternoons. Not sure why they are not growing

They were 'out of stock' when I checked, and then yesterday I ordered some (not on sale)... it said nothing about being out of stock.🤔 Looking forward to making water kefir!

Because there are so many variables temperature of the house, how many grains you have, how do you know when it’s done and you can add your flavoring?

I had a bottle explode once. I still have blueberry stains in the ceiling 😂 found glass shards for weeks after. I’m glad not one was home when it went.

Thanks for the recipes!! Do you drink this while nursing? I just made some and it smells a bit like alcohol and I’m still nursing....just curious! Did I ferment it too long ya think?

If I buy the grains do I have to use them immediately? If they can store, how long do you think they would store?

Just add some sugar and water so your grains are fed. And then you can use them later. ;)

they come dehydrated. I had mine in the fridge for several weeks before I opened them.

Once you hydrate them, if you need a break, you can put the grains in the back of the fridge and let them sit for a few months.

I put mine in the fridge for almost a year. Now I tried to make it and it looks that my grain are death. Is that possible?

Has anyone ever STARTED the ferment with alcohol (vodka, rum, etc)? I read one fleeting comment online somewhere about using kefir, whey, yeast, or alcohol - but cannot find anything else on the topic of using alcohol to get the ferment started instead of the other options. Thanks in advance.

I just made my first batch! It tastes wonderful but is it supposed to taste a bit like wine? I remember that kombucha has a trace bit of alcohol in it from fermenting. I am not sure I did it right:) Thanks!

Hi! Could I possible make flavored water kefier in stainless steel bottles? Glass bottles although beautiful are dangerous in my home with my kids and my clumsy hands. Could this still work?
