I'm right handed. So I put my left hand behind my back to see if I could play the song. It really wasn't that hard. I was also able to pause it and replay it - all with that same hand behind my back. I bet with a little practice I could hit that play button using only my left hand.

I searched high and low for the book featured on his website, but the English version seems to be sold out permanently. The Japanese site doesn't ship internationally, and this song is not available for PDF download. Luckily, I have a nephew working in Japan who was able to purchase it for me! I'm pleased to find out that the transcription is an accurate note-for-note representation of the original. This is my favorite arrangement so far. Before discovering this, Joey Alexander's version was my favorite. I would classify this arrangement as advanced. 👍👏Thanks for sharing your genius talent with the world, Jacob Koller!

What an awesome arrangement! I guess I would rank it as advanced, just shy of insanely difficult. (At least I hope it turns out that way when I start working on it. ;) ) I love how you switch between 3/4 and 7/4 time. That's so cool! And I dig section K, where the left hand gets his own solo! Just like a bass player. Another thing I enjoy is all the rhythmic variety. It makes it so interesting. Like occasionally there's the dotted 1/8s in the 3/4 section, which makes it sound like 4 beats instead of 3. Thanks for posting this video!

I just have one question for you Jacob, hopefully I get an answer this time. How long does it take you to practice and what's your most helpful tip for left hand dexterity...any exercises you have in mind? I hope you know this means I've been following your work for years and it always amazes me.
@JacobKollerMusic4 жыл бұрын
I practice a couple of hours a day right now. I didn't really practice many exercises other than scales. But I spent a lot of time improvising with my LH which is why I think I have decent dexterity with my LH. So I would improvise with your LH a lot and try playing the Charlie Parker Omnibook or something similar with your LH.

If I ever die I want to appear in some rainy place with the love of my life, and hear you and Robert Glasper play .... my Heaven
That sound at 2:31 is incredibly beautiful! Sounds magical! I just want to tell you that I really love listening to your music, and heavily respect all of the work that you put into making these videos. For me, this arrangement would be very challenging, but very much in the realms of possibility. I find that when people start making incredibly difficult music, like Liszt, Paganini, all of those virtuosos, I find, to an extent, that their music becomes alienating with no clear direction due to all of the things they add to their music for the sole purpose of making it more difficult. Cool to watch people play these pieces, but in my opinion, not very fun to listen to. Your music is perfect for me, because it is something that challenges me, but it is still very enjoyable to listen to. I love your music!! Hope that answers your question
@JacobKollerMusic4 жыл бұрын

There are some songs that I probably would never be able to play no matter how much I practice, like David Gentile's arrangement of Sleigh Ride, or the Star Wars medley by Jarrod Radnich, or some of the Liszt etudes. Then there are other arrangers who I would put in the advanced category, including Marilynn Ham and some of the harder songs by Mark Hayes. I think the songs in your Jazz Piano Standards book are some of your more challenging arrangements, and would out them as being more difficult than the songs by Marilynn and Mark, mostly because of the syncopations and runs. Sometimes I can spend hours (days?) getting comfortable fingerings for the runs in your songs and getting them into my head and hands. I am currently working on your arrangements of A Millions Dreams and City of Stars which i would say are easier (probably because of less runs). I am always amazed at how you make it look so easy and are able to play it perfectly. I find that no matter how much I practice a song, it is hard to play it perfect. Maybe you could give me some lessons. Lol. Anyway, great song, and look forward to more in the future.

I've been playing this standard for 44 years, originally taken in by the minor ninths from McCoy and the opportunities for embellishments. But I never thought of working in the left hand runs and chordal movements the way you have and find it very exhilarating and liberating. It's like drawing from the left side of the brain. Great, great work and good luck to you!
