Yes, Robert Wise at that time of choosing him for the role of Captain Von Trapp acknowledged that ' everyone in the western world knows Chris is a great actor' and that was in 1964, so the question was why did it took Hollywood so long to award him an Oscar. If he hadn't had a long life, he would have missed out, as he was the oldest to be awarded one. It's such a shame and such a sham. In 'The Last Station', Dame Helen Mirrin was awarded yet another Oscar and Mr Plummer? Though he was lauded for his acting and nominated, he wasn't awarded as usual. So much for Hollywood.

OMG...this is news to me! I called myself an SoM "nutter" above but, really, I am just a fan compared to the real nutters. I only saw it once in a theater. Part of it for me, though, is what was going on in my life at the time. I saw it in Atlanta in a grand theater as soon as it was released, and it was magical. It had the excitement of live theater. I had no connections to Atlanta except for a menial job. I did have my rent paid for the week, and I got fed at my job. After I bought my ticket, I literally had less than a nickel to my name in this strange city. Literally, two or three copper pennies in my pocket although I was only a couple of days from a payday. It was "a moment" in my life. And, of course, I loved the movie and Julie and Charmian and all of them. Now, the late years of my life are being marked by SoM deaths. Julie is no spring chicken, but she looks awfully robust. I just can't possibly say how much this movie means to me. I have read most of what has been written about it, and watched most of the KZbins. It is not just the movie itself for me now; it is the movie and the story of its creation and all the people involved.

I totally enjoyed this narration by Julie Andrews of her take on the making of the film and the cast. One sequence in the picture is particularly poignant: That is where Captain Von Trapp apologizes to Maria and confesses that she was “right’ , he didn’t know the children. This sequence changed the nature of the relationship between the Captain and Maria. For the first time he had to look up to her, she ascending the staircase with her larger than life shadow on the wall behind her. She waited for him to say, “I ask you to stay”. This sequence evoked in the viewer the notion of a new respect for the governess by the Captain and the relationship transcended from master/servant to one of equals , at least psychologically. Of course this was a necessary transition for the proposal and marriage , which followed, to be believable. I enjoyed the entire movie, the Laendler, the argument, the music, but the skill and subtlety of the apology sequence grabs my heart every time I watch the film.
@allenjones31302 жыл бұрын
I agree with Anne MacMullen's comments about the sequence in which Georg apologizes to Maria and asks her to stay on. Andrews and Plummer do a great job in that scene.

Before the movie was made, my sister bought the Broadway record Sound of Music by Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. We played that record so much, the record wore out and so my sister bought the second record from the Broadway version . Then the movie came out and I bought that record from the movie version so we used to play the two records with Mary Martin and Julie Andrews. While I really liked the two versions, there were special things about each version that were really special. In the Broadway version, I really liked the song "No Way to Stop It" and in the movie I like "I Have Confidence". I still have my record from The Sound of Music, I don't listen to it now but I go on KZbin and still play the two versions of the Broadway version with Mary Martin and the movie version with Julie Andrews.

Thought I had seen it all, but I had not seen this one before. One problem with being an SoM nutter is that you do get rather tired of the same old reminiscences. Not that it is anyone's fault...the cast is brought into a venue and their stories are solicited. It is what it is. This piece, though, seemed to have some fresh takes including Robert Wise's surprising comment that the real Maria was "bossy." Anyone who has been over most of this material kinda knows this. Still, it was stunning to hear it bluntly said. And Maria, RIP, is not diminished by the honesty; she was a great lady and a strong lady; she had opinions; she was real, and it was her life.
