I don‘t know if it would be too much for other viewers but I would actually enjoy watching two videos. One bracket style Video where you are strict and than another one with maybe your top 5 or 10 of the year. Would be interesting to see if the top contenders in both Videos are the same or not. I would Imagine there will be differences 😊

The book bracket is such a struggle! I'm wondering if for you a Book Matrix would not be easier :D It's a variation of Priotization Matrix. In this case every book (f.ex. every 5 star read) goes head to head with every other and the ultimate winner is by how many "battles" they win. So you don't risk leaving an incredible book behind just because it's not *the best of the month*. Maybe it would easily win with some books from other months

I feel like this book bracket was more "organic" given you wanted to include your yearly favourite. And I'm absolutely convinced to pick up Monstrilio now! (And I believe it's okay to see the video in January... as long as we see it! Plus, it gives you a bit of down time from certain books.)

I love this spread idea and discussion! I maintain my bracket throughout the year and reevaluate at the end. Also- I sometimes choose 4 star reads as my winner because I loved them even if I can tell they’re flawed

I agree with not being stringent about choosing one book per month in yearly brackets. I pick top twelve overall & work down from there. You were the one to introduce this spread, & it’s definitely among my favorite part of my bullet/reading journal! My top read for 2023 was Cloud Cuckoo Land (also recommended by you!)

I love the book bracket videos! I created the first spreads of my first reading journal recently and my favorite one was the book bracket spread. I’m so excited to fill it out in a year’s time. You’ve inspired me to get out of my reading slump and create a reading journal of my own and I’m really excited about it! I’ll be honest, I only read a handful of books this year so the list is pretty short, but my favorite book that I read in 2023 was Persuasion by Jane Austen. It was the first Austen book I’ve ever read as an adult (I read Sense & Sensibility and Pride & Prejudice when I was about 12 years old and I don’t remember any details) and I was genuinely surprised at how much I loved it. It made me laugh so much and cry with joy. You should see my annotations in the margins! A surprise new favorite.

Adding Monstrilio to my TBR right now! I came across the book on GR but it didn't seem like the type of books I read - tbh you and I don't quite read the same type of books, and that's okay obviously - but the way you talked about it really make me interested in it. Who knows, maybe I'll find a new favourite as well! Also, we LOVE that it never gets easier 😂😂

Excellent video, Elizabeth. Your struggles to pick one book are sweet and represent me too 😅. Monstrilio is in my TBR list since u first spoke about it. And 100 years of solitude is a classic that I read lots of years ago for my University degree. I read it in Spanish as this is my mother tongue. One of my favorite books of the year (I cannot pick one, sorry 😢) is Elena Knows, by Claudia Piñeiro, followed very close by Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. And yeah to a Notion+Books video. ❤❤❤❤❤❤

Love this head-to-head format! Looking back over my 2023 reading, I only had three 5-star reads, so my decisions were much easier... Perhaps I need to get better book recommendations... Or be more generous with my star ratings? Anyway, those three were Legends and Lattes, The Lincoln Highway, and Digger: Unearthed - and I had to go with Digger: Unearthed as my top pick overall (still a standout from way back in January 2023).

I always enjoy your book review videos. How about throwing in a "wild card" slot into the top 3 to make a top 4? That way, when you have months like June when you have more than one super favorite you can put it in there. Or just pick from your 2nd place books for all 12 months to fill the slot. Just an idea. I'm looking forward to seeing the next reading journal set up!!

I think because I've had so many uneven reading years, where I'll have a cluster of 5 stars and then a couple months of 3 or 4, I always feel like my brackets don't really reflect my favorites well. So this year I switched to a sort of ranked choice set up to really see how all of the books compared to each other. And it took me a couple tries setting it up (first I did try to go by month, and then I just went by all 5 stars), but The Collected Regrets of Clover, Tress of the Emerald Sea, and The Once and Future Witches consistently showed up in my top 3 spots.

I loved this video and the diversity in your reading! I knew you would pick Monstrilio because you love it so much. It's on my TBR, but I may need to move it up. Thanks for so many recommendations. Question-what makes a book five stars for you? I feel like I grade too harshly.

Thank you! Honestly, my rating is 99% a feeling I get as I finish (loosely based on 1⭐️=hated, 2⭐️=disliked, 3⭐️=good, 4⭐️=great, 5⭐️=fantastic/favourite), though I do use the CAWPILE method of rating when I’m feeling conflicted/on the fence. A five star book is typically a book I felt did what it set out to do extremely well (I try to keep in mind target audience and genre while rating), while also making me feel something, with minor flaws but nothing major. I sometimes throw the rules out the window, though, when I love a book despite its many/major flaws 😂 I hope that helps a bit!

Amazing video! My favorite of the year was the first volume of The Glass Scientists by S.H. Cotugno, but I have been following the comic for years before it became a graphic novel, so I felt I couldn't put it in my book bracket. It's on another level entirely. So my winner was Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson!

Loved this video! It reminded me to pick my own favourite book of the year, which is 'Het lied van ooievaar en dromedaris' by Anjet Daanje (it roughly translates as 'The song of stork and dromedary'). I completely agree with you about Natural Beauty - it's easily one of my favorite books I read last year, I read it in a day during a reading slump, and while I also had a few issues here and there the overall impact and quality of the story and writing and horror were so phenomenal, I gave it a 4.5 on initial reading but it's definitely a 5 star for me.

I really liked the narration style and was fascinated by the exploration of some of life’s biggest questions through the lens of the horror genre. I read it in the original german version, so i'm not sure if it's well translated. The author has a talent for playing with words. But it is weird, a mix of fairy tale and adventure, bizzare and a wonderful homage to the world of books and booklovers.

I really need to check out some of these books. Especially the horror ones as that's a genre i'm trying to get into. My favorite book of 2024 was Unseelie by Ivelisse Housman. It's a YA fantasy and the plot is nothing that you've never seen before, but the MC is autistic, which creates a different lenze than we usually get. The rep is really good. I'm autistic myself and i never realised how much i needed that representation until i read Unseelie

Can you say more about your methodology for determining a book's grade? Is it overall or genre-specific in some ways, as in "a 5-star horror" doesn't have to be Shakespeare? I have trouble giving 5 stars, as I expect them to be James Joyce, but that's hardly fair. I need to get over myself. Any thoughts?

My rating is definitely variable depending on the genre/age demographic. I try to evaluate a book based on what it is and is trying to do, not compare it to all literature! One of the books that I'm still thinking (and that I will probably upgrade to 5 stars) is Firekeeper's daughter by Angeline Boulley.

favorite book of the year…that’s so hard! i’ve read so many good books this year T^T but i think warbreaker by brandon sanderson was my top book just because of how much it sticks with me and it was the start of my sanderson journey! loved this video :D

@@PlantBasedBride I really think you’d like his work! I’m glad I personally started with Warbreaker cause I got a good look at how he writes, the way he structures stories, and how he crafts his worlds and on top of that got a new favorite book ;)

Monstrilio was also my favorite of 2023 & probably just an overall favorite forever. It absolutely wrecked me and was just incredible. The Hike by Drew Margary was my second favorite & it falls into the weird shit category 🤣

I read my favorite book of 2023 on December 30th. I hadn't intended to stay awake all night reading, but the story was too captivating to put down. So it creeped in just under the wire. The book is "Good Girls Don't Die" by Christina Henry. It is 100% the final girl book I've spent years searching for after reading more than a few duds. 5-stars! Please add this book to your TBR, especially if you're a horror fan. This was the first novel I've read from this author, and she'll probably be an automatic read for me from now on.

Thank you for reading books by Palestinian authors. As their perspective is actively being censored and silenced, reading their words now is more important than ever
