How interesting to see Tarsem's "Fall" in your list. He's a true auteur and I had the great pleasure of working with him several times. His ability to translate ideas into stunning visuals is recently unmatched IMHO. Of course we don't agree on everything, that misses the point. An eclectic group jumping from "Speed Racer to "The White Ribbon". How strange that "The Hunt" is on my coffee table to be watched again in the next few days. Thanks!

I can't get on with Hana-Bi even though I love many of Kitano's other works. Kids Return and Sonatine are top tier for me. I think it's because I really appreciate the balance between contemplative melancholy and story elements and for me Hana-Bi veers too far into just melancholy... "meditative" as you put it. One of those to put in the category of "It's probably just me but..."

Great video. While I’m not a fan of ‘Eye’s Wide Shut’ I don’t understand why so many want to compare it to other Kubrick films. You can’t, it’s impossible. Love Barton Fink and Eyes Wide shut. Wasn't crazy about White ribbon, Sicario, Parasite and Tar, out of these, Sicario is definitely the one I enjoyed the least, I watched it only a couple years ago and I can't remember a thing about it, meaning it didn't leave any impression on me. I am 100% sold on Pulse, I had never heard about it, will definitely check it out. Im not sure about every year since I was born, but there are some I am sure about (mostly): 2001 - Donnie Darko, but this year also has two of my all time favorite movies, Mulholland Drive and The man who wasn't there 2002 - Spider ( I haven't seen that many movies from this particular year but I really liked this one) 2003 - Stuck on you 2004 - Kill Bill 2 2005 - Brokeback mountain 2013 - Blue Jasmine 2016 - Swiss Army Man 2018 - The Ballad of Buster Scruggs 2019 - The Lighthouse 2022 - Elvis

Thank you for this list! My knowledge of international cinema, or films produced outside the U.S. is almost non-existent, so your choices are always a useful guide. Coincidentally, my favorite movie of 2013 is also another "sci-fi" entry featuring Scarlett Johansson, "Her." I consider it one of the best of this century, and I don't say that lightly. The first time I saw "Under the Skin" I found it to be too enigmatic and confounding through much of its runtime. It wasn't until the finale, and in retrospect, that it made much more sense to me. Consequently, because of my particular experience, I would only recommend it to the most patient and openminded. "Her" on the other hand, is much more accessible and equally brilliant IMO.

Yi Yi is my Favourite film. Period. (closely followed by Barry Lyndon.) Love all your other choices except Attack of the Clones personally, but you're not alone in having sentimental feelings about it undeniably remaining 'a George Lucas film' - for better or worse. With Hollywood, a true sense of the singular artist behind the work will only get more and more urgently sought out by films lovers, as everything sticks to algorithms, formulas and market research, and every screenplay is cynically churned out by AI - although probably won't make much of a difference for most big budget releases either way.

I did one of these lists back when the idea was trending on Letterboxd in 2016. I updated it a few years later (as I have a film for 2018 on there) and it's since sat idle. Might have to give that the ol' update again, as it's been a long five years lol. I won't fully play-by-play my list, but here are some places where my favorites might diverge from either the critical or popular standard: 1984: Blood Simple. I kinda think this might be a top-5 Coen Bros film? Mostly listing here because it's my birth year so feels like a good anchor. 1986: The Great Mouse Detective. A mouse-featuring spin on Sherlock Holmes back when Disney didn't mind getting dark, disturbing, and dirty. 2000: Titan A.E.: When I made my original list I used Almost Famous in this spot. Back then it mattered that I not boldly stray from the intellectual side of film appreciation (which isn't a bad thing, per se). Now I don't really care and when I see I listed Titan A.E. as a runner-up, like, THAT is the film I'd queue up tomorrow without second thought and have a blast with. 2002: The Ring. In a cruel twist of fate, two of my four top films of all time are from 2002, The Ring and Adaptation. When I made my list I picked the latter as the more intellectually satisfying. Now, as with the one above, I flip them: I watch The Ring so much more often than Adaptation. I consider it genuinely underrated. 2004: Saved!. When it comes to high school comedies, like, I vibe so much with Saved. The added layer of criticism towards organized (particularly Evangelical) Christianity puts it over the top for me. 2008: Martyrs. Not all great films are actual works of art. Martyrs is. 2009: Triangle. While Triangle is slowly becoming forgotten to time, I will not forget. One of the rare films that I feel becomes stronger and clearer the more I watch it rather than the reverse. 2014: Housebound. Perhaps the only film to give me a new phobia. Also toes the line between comedy and horror better than any film I've seen aside from the original Evil Dead. Alright. That's what I've got. Apologies for the length. I'll drop a link to my Letterboxd list in the comments for anyone curious.

Love to see love for attack of the clones. I did my dissertation on the melodramatic mode of the star wars prequel films. Theyre something that i loved as a kid and fell out of love with as an edgy film bro teenager and now i love them more than ever. The "bad writing" feels very purposeful. The characters talk like theyre kids playing with action figures. But despite that, there is very strong motivation for everything, often to a heightened extent that i would compare with Douglas Sirk films which adds to the other worldly epic tale feeling it has. The action sequences are exhilarating. The cgi is revolutionary. The sound design is second to none. The music is John Williams best. People complain about the politcs but i never had an issue with them as a kid. The scenes are always structured so that you know whos good and whos bad but because of the politics, overall theres a great feeling of depth to the world and story. The conceptual design of everything is wild. So many individual designs for so many aliens, spaceships, buildings. And you kind of just look at it and go...yeah that makes sense. Because its all so unique but so cohesive. Hayden Christensen is possibly the worst actor in the series and yet hes weirdly very perfectly cast. There is this inherent darkness to him and he works for the boyish recklessness too.

Funny! I have watched this video in pieces. I stopped right in the beginning of 2003 and Oldboy. I thought to myself to mention that I like that movie and that the american remake isn't nearly as good. Then bascially that's the first thing you point out when I started to watch it again! Haha. Nice list and good pacing. Not too short or too long!

Interesting list: Regarding Red… give me Blue and White anyday. Blue is one of my favourites of the 1990s. But Red…it may have the symbolism, but Irene Jacob is so so sweet that she can put anyone in a diabetic coma. Love Unforgiven… but for me 1992 was the year of The Crying Game. Could not disagree with Eyes Wide Shut… saw it on opening weekend In September 99 and it haunts me to this day. My second favourite film of the 1990s. Also could not disagree with Collateral, one of my top 10 favourites of the Noughties. The same goes for Under The Skin one of my top 10 favourites of the 2010s. Remember going to an early morning screening on opening weekend and people were going coming and going from the screening room due to the cinema staff serving white wine. Morons! Speed Racer is a bittersweet experience for me, it was the film I saw after my final presentation at uni. The presentation ended and my uni days were over.😢 Tenet is IMO Nolan’s weakest film. It’s not a bad film, just weak especially following on from Dunkirk, which is my favourite film of his.

I like that he included it. Not because it’s good, it’s terrible. But I like that he’s not needing to pick the best, or coolest, hippest film. Sometimes we just want a movie to be comfort food, something familiar. I can relate to that.
