I use all of my hardware synths (REV2 included) in Cubase as instrument tracks. This way I can record midi and bounce in real time once i am happy with all midi parameters in there. Exception to the rule would be Analog Rytm and Tempest, as I record these directly into audio. Ah yeah, some synths like modular stuff I record directly in audio tracks too.

Man this was super helpful, thank you! Something that might be useful to you is the Option-Shift-Up/Down command! Pitches the midi notes by octaves rather than semi tones or having to manually drag

They are extremely useful, especially when you start getting into larger track counts. It’s basically a quick way to group sounds together and send them to a single bus.

I could but it really has changed drastically so depends what you are hoping to achieve. I now use my Prophet as it’s own midi controller via usb instead of the method shown in the video. I have a drum pad for midi drum programming but everything else keyboard/synth wise is just controlled and fed back into prophet. My audio interface is a RME Babyface Pro FS now.

Great! I was wondering how you might handle not using a midi controller, and recording the midi from the synth it self. For example, say you are doing a multitrack recording session of a synthesizer band - several people each playing external synths that: send audio, send MIDI, receive MIDI. I'd love to record each instruments audio and midi, each on their respective tracks. Then, after the initial recording, you can do your alternate takes and tweak the external synth like you did in your video. Whenever I do this, the MIDI tracks seem super unreliable - sometimes they don't record, sometimes they do, sometimes the mid tracks demix to their respective tracks, sometimes they merge for no apparent reason (even wit the auto demix setting checked in the settings). I find Logic confusing to use when doing multitrack MIDI + audio recording. One day... one day I'll get a nice flow for this
@markbergsound
@markbergsound 3 жыл бұрын
Woah ya never tried working with that many midi devices at once, I feel like a lot of the issues may come from the devices themselves. For example my prophet wasn’t working properly for awhile and it was because I hadn’t updated a driver on it. So ya good luck with the pursuit! I’m sure it’s doable, just will take a lot of trial and error and isolating individual synths.

Do you not set it up in stereo? By connecting both audio cables and clicking the stereo button on the audio track? (The little button to the left of ‘input’ on the channel strip. Unless you are trying to save, or don’t have enough, input channels on your interface.
@markbergsound
@markbergsound 11 ай бұрын
Ya I purposely run mono because of inputs on my interface, I just got used to it and If I want a nice stereo patch I will record two takes and modulate them differently by hand and then pan them out to taste. Makes for fun and unique stereo patches.

@@markbergsound I am a little confused about the midi implementation. You showed your Midi controller connected to the Hardware Synth. How does Logic connect to it? I assume that logic connects to the keyboard controller via USB. Is that passed through to the midi out on the keyboard controller? I suppose the setup could be a little different if you have a direct midi interface on the computer.
@tobiaskagstrom

Even better (in my opinion!..It's Ok to think the other way =) ) - Keep the audio cable from the REV 2 to your input just as you have it now - run a USB from your CPU to the USB on your REV 2 - I assume you already got a USB from your MIDI controller to your cpu?! - Create a software instrument track i Logic and choose "External Instrument" as your instrument (it's under "UTILITY") - Then Choose "REV2" under "MIDI Destination" (i think it's named so?!) - And choose input: "input 1" if that's where you hooked up your audio cable from the REV 2? Now this is a track that both plays and returns sound from your REV2. In other words it's just like your REV 2 is like any other software instrument. Hope I explained this right.

LOL the pan right thing is bizarre. Good stuff though man, I love the Rev2. I have been thinking of buying one, but I remembered I had bought the Arturia V collection a while ago which includes a Prophet clone VST, so I have been messing with that instead. The CPU usage is no joke though in logic. What machine are you using for your production?

Great tutorial. I've just hooked up my old Novation Nova after 20 years after watching it. My only worry is how to record performance program data like your cut off example. Tried using automation and latching in Logic but no go? Is it a matter of knob twiddling in real time when bouncing it to audio?
@markbergsound
@markbergsound 3 жыл бұрын
Nice! Glad I could inspire you to get that hooked back up :). My prophet Rev 2 receives my modwheel information so can automate that in with Logic (I assume the Novation would work similarly) and it’s just a matter of routing my prophets mod wheel to effect whatever parameter I want. I honestly prefer working with audio though and using my actual hardwares knobs, so recommend just twiddling with them in real time.

there’s something I’m missing. So you record the midi only at first, then how do you get that session recorded from one track the the audio track? And why did you use a midi device for the midi? Can’t you use the Prophet as the midi for itself?

Yup you can totally use the Prophet as the midi device for itself. I just like using my midi controller as it’s set up on my desk.
