I grew up with Clive Barker, Poppy z and of course Lovecraft - by chance, i found this Italian anthology with authors that influenced Lovecraft : Bierce, Blackwood, the king in yellow and my favourite, Arthur Machen. That was the beginning of a lifelong obsession !! It's a great moment for weird literature, so much that one could read only weird horror Books. I plan my readings and I usually read one non-weird books every three. My all-time favs are Aickman, Ligotti, J. Ray and the above mentioned Machen. Read and loved the writers mentioned on this video except for Fracassi, but I know who he is from the Lovecraft ezine podcast...i need to try his books
@JasonsWeirdReads2 жыл бұрын
Fracassi isn’t always weird fiction and I think that he’s trying to separate himself from it a little for the future. But! I think you’d be doing yourself a big favour by checking out his short story collections. Also Shiloh, his American Civil War novella which is not only brutal, but also very much a piece of great weird fiction.

You can get packages sent to your local UPS or Fed Ex store.. they will hold them for you to pick up. Fed Ex does not charge for the service, some franchise UPS stores charge a small fee ($5?). I had to do this with medication in the past. You just put your name on it and their street address. The only issue is you have to be SURE which service is used to ship.. they cannot accept packages that are not their own service. So Fex Ex can't take UPS packages and vice versa.

You certainly can! And it depends on what you read first by Ligotti. If it’s Grimscribe and/or Songs of a Dead Dreamer, you should be fine. If it’s Teatro Grottesco, you might need some help. If it’s The Conspiracy Against The Human Race (Which is nonfiction essays about antinatalism. I haven’t read it, but I’ve heard things...) you might need full scale psychological help. 😂

If you’re looking for an eerie sense of unease, then his earlier work, like the double collection of Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe put out by Penguin. If you’re looking for the very strange, then Teatro Grottesco. Laird Barron is my favourite, but the sentence structure he uses could be off putting to or difficult for reading him as a second language. Unless, of course, there’s Spanish translations of his work. Whatever you choose, I hope that you enjoy!

it seems like the people who talka bout Robert Aickman most are -- writers themsevles. I guess that might not be too surprising. I have read Cold Hand in Mine and a few other random short stories. "The Hospice" is amazing. I can definitely see how a chronological approach to Lovecraft would benefit a reader in understanding. i have never really done this but have also read most of the stories. I feel like he definitely developed over time. One can't be sure but I feel like he would have adopted more and more science fiction elements had he remained alive. That seemed to be where the stories were heading, though I suppose you could argue he was just going with the times... Blackwood's quite versatile -- strangely one of my favourite things by him is a book taht I think was ostensibly for children, called The Extra Day. It's not horror in teh slightest; in fact it's quite the opposite; very optimistic or of-the-light, you might say...just a beautiful story about childhood and freedom and learning about things beyoeyond. It's also rather humorous.
@JasonsWeirdReads3 жыл бұрын
The Swords, which I believe is in Cold Hand, is a favourite of mine. I have not read The Extra Day by Blackwood, but it sounds quite interesting.
@DamnableReverend3 жыл бұрын
@@JasonsWeirdReads yeah, it sure is! That's also a great one. And since it starts off the compilation, it was the first Ackman tale I read... Can't really say if you would like The Extra Day -- it's a beautifully written book taht I think is very open-minded, especially for something written in the early 1910s. If I had children I would definitely feel like I should read this to them, but it is not in any way somehow lesser or insignificant for being written with children in mind/as the main protagonists.
