CORRECTION: When I showed the box set DARK CRIMES I said the films came from Universal Studios, which was incorrect. One of the films, PHANTOM LADY was made at Universal. The other two films, THE GLASS KEY and THE BLUE DAHLIA were made at Paramount, where Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake were under contract.

A genre I love and a genre I sadly don't have nearly enough of. Great collection, Mike.

I think that “Moontide” may be my favorite of the bunch - so atmospheric, with such a great cast - unusual role for Claude Rains too ..”Road House” (also with Ida Lupino) was a fun noir too ...

Yes, these are both excellent films. It's been a while since I saw both of them, and I want to revisit them. Maybe I'll do a Fox Noir Marathon and rewatch all 24 movies in a stretch!!

Thanks for tuning in, and thanks for the sub! I guess the Warner sets are out of print and therefore going up in price. Maybe that's just a temporary situation. Let's hope so!

Those are some great boxsets up front there. I'm especially keen on Murder My Sweet. Iimprobably enough Dick Powell may be my favourite Marlowe up there with Bogie and Mitchum in Farewell My Lovely which of course is the same story as the Powell (I didn't like the follow-up re-make of The Big Sleep despite Jimmy Stewart's cameo). Also The Narrow Margin in particular deserves to be much better known. But most of all Box 5 has got The Phenix Story! I've been searching for that!

Hi you have a great collection for sure, I think I've seen about half of your movie collection maybe less, after a while many titles tend to become somewhat forgotten as to whether they were viewed oor not, thanks for jarring my memory. " Sudden Fear " is one of Joan Crawford's best film noir ,have seen it?
@grey1951
@grey1951 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think I've ever seen Sudden Fear, or it may have been so long ago that I can't remember it. It's definitely on my watch list. Thank you for the comment!

Curse you Mike! I want all of the ones I haven't got yet!!!! Oh except the Altman Long Goodbye - I really hated that film. To be fair though I had reservations about the Chandler novel too. I'm glad you included Leave Her to Heaven cos although I'm entirely sure it's a film noir it was one of my mum's favourite films. This is one of my favorite collection videos ever so thanks.
@grey1951
@grey1951 6 жыл бұрын
Well, thank you for the compliment! I guess this video isn't all that long after all. Leave Her To Heaven is a very dark story about obsessive "love". Gene Tierney has a difficult role to play and she does it extremely well. with a lesser actress it could have been a melodramatic mess. That scene where she lets Darryl Hickman drown is just devastating. I'm surprised the censors didn't lose their minds over that scene.
@WolfGratz
@WolfGratz 6 жыл бұрын
She was so good that my mum was willing to forgive Tierney for being on my dad's list of favourite actresses. I'm not sure she was quite so willing to accept Linda Darnell though. Incidentally I was just watching Tierney yesterday in Tobacco Road where she looked very, very different. By heck that was a dodgy old movie - is it hadn't been Tierney and the occasional beautifully composed shot by Ford I might not have made it to the end.

The Altman flick was OK. I liked seeing Sterling Hayden in a latter day performance. And of course Arnie making an early day performance. Well, OK, it isn't really a performance. he just shows up.

With a title like "My film noir dvd collection," you certainly know how to attract my attention. You've got a STELLAR collection, Mike. Hang on to those WB noir box sets, as the sets themselves are currently out of print and fetch some decent coinage on eBay and the like. I should have known that you'd have collected all the Fox Film Noir titles! Nice to know you're just as thorough as myself. Though I contest more than a hand-full of the films they chose to moniker as noir, there's so many top-tier films in that collection that, for me, I bought those dubious titles just to have a complete set. The VCI Forgotten Noir box is an interesting one. Of course I bought all the subsequent box sets as well, and though I wouldn't recommend them to the casual fan, I think you'd appreciate them all. Or most of them. Honestly it's been so long since I last viewed any of them, my memory is a bit foggy. Whilst releasing those Forgotten Noir box sets, VCI also released a couple of Hammer Noir collections, which are for the most part very good. Nothing memorable, but they go down well when the mood strikes for a dark and obscure crime thriller. I'm curious which film noir titles you own from the Criterion Collection, which has lately been releasing some truly great noir titles. I recall a few of them in earlier collection update videos. Of course I highly recommend upgrading to the Criterion Kiss Me Deadly disc, as they really improve upon the image and include some great supplemental features. I think I remember you owning The Killing. That one is essential, for a lot of reasons. They recently re-released Night and the City and it's a real pip-a-roo! Another one that's prime western noir is the original Delmar Daves adaptation of 3:10 to Yuma. I feel certain that you've seen it, but it's an extremely worth-while Criterion disc if you're in B&N during the next sale! Oh, and the fact that you included The Long Goodbye at the end of the video does my heart good. It's my favorite movie, period -- for reasons that I have a difficult time articulating. But it's an essential neo noir, despite it being an extremely divisive film. Chinatown has to be in my top 10 -- you're right, it's an extremely dark film, contrasted perfectly with the bright, sunny cinematography. Okay, I've said enough. Thanks again, Mike!

Question: You are sitting down to watch a movie -- how do you pick what you are going to watch?
@grey1951
@grey1951 6 жыл бұрын
Simple. I just ask myself the universal question: What would Roger Corman do? Seriously, there's no ritual to it. If I'm looking to be comfortable and unchallenged, I pick something I've seen before that brings back good feelings and memories. Case in point: A few weeks ago I put on Stage Door, which I've seen so many times and never get tired of watching. If I'm looking to challenge myself and get a new experience, then I look for a Criterion classic or a modern day action, crime or horror film. Sometimes it's fun to see how much I can take before I start closing my eyes!!

You need a t-shirt -- WWRCD? ;) I find myself often at odds with myself (I don't want to read a movie right now. / That is too serious for my mood. / I'm too tired to start something so demanding of attention. / No western now. / I just saw a musical last night. / blah blah blah.) and I end up feeling, "I have nothing to watch!" I overthink the process sometimes, and end up on You Tube while those stacks keep growing, Ha! Your simple process is just the example I may need to spend more time watching and less time ruminating, although it still will be harder to watch the westerns....
@grey1951

Believe me, I know that "I have nothing to watch" feeling all too well. It amazes me that I can stand there surrounded by movies I haven't seen and even consider thinking that there's nothing to watch!! Looks like we both need to simplify our process. Good luck with those Westerns!

Deanna Durban and Gene Kelly with Gale Sondergard in a film noire. That just sounds sooo wrong!
@grey1951
@grey1951 6 жыл бұрын
It's a very dark, downbeat film, which makes sense considering the author of the story. And Miss Durbin sings!!! But, no, Mr. Kelly doesn't dance. I'm thinking about deleting this video because it's way too long. I may want to show my Film Noir collection in two parts. What do you think, WolfGratz?

I'm probably the wrong person to ask cos I even watch Luke Ryan's videos on a regular basis, including his "Ryan Chattaway 24 hour Movie Marathon" productions in one sitting. But I think this genre collection is brilliant and definitely deserves a video (or two).

I just checked on the length of some of James' collection videos and they were pretty long, so I guess this isn't so bad. But I may divide things up for the Criterion video which should be coming up next. Yeah, Luke makes some very cool videos!!
