I hate to break the bad news: My massive pet fire ant colony (the Crimson Knights) managed to find an escape route from their setup, a volcanic island paludarium I created for them. Fire ants are a difficult species to keep, particularly because they are escape artists. In this episode, we delve into how severe of a breakout situation the escape is, whether or not the queen had moved out, and what our next steps are from here. Hope you enjoy this week's fire ant episode! Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution. #FireAnts

You could always try installing an additional pane of something just far enough in from the existing external pane that ant's can't just cross the gap, and coat both sides of the new pane and also the original pane so you've effectively tripled the width of your barrier at the weak point. The gap between the panes would also serve as an advance warning alert well before a full escape, since if you find any ants have fallen into that gap (which they'd then struggle to get out of) you'd know that the initial part of the barrier has a breach.

I think the only long term solution will be to adapt the existing enclosure with clear glass and make it a closed off environment. Otherwise you will encounter escape problems when you are away from home for a few days (or longer) and not reapplying the chalk every day. If you use glass you will still see the open enclosure inside but it will stop them escaping so easily. Good luck AC in whatever you decide to do.

That what I was thinking too. You'll have to wall in Vulcania with like clear plastic, plexiglass or similar and some kinda tubigrip glue in the corners to keep the ants physically contained inside and hopefully move the access points to less humid parts of the enclosure where the talc will work better.

I mean personally, I think you had a very genius idea with one of the Golden Empire setups. You had a very efficient setup with a Paludarium, where the terrestrial part would be surrounded by water, and you can put in some more sea creatures, and it becomes a thriving ecosystem in a way. The aquatic area, and inhabitants could feed off fallen members of the fire ant colony, and that would also be a plus in being at least a subtle population control for the fire ant colony. That still has to be one of my favorite designs even to this day.
@ghoulishtheories7979
@ghoulishtheories7979 Жыл бұрын
Actually ignore this idea, lmao. I forgot that fire ants have natural evolution that helped them adapt to waters in high quantities. AKA: They can make rafts with each other, using it to float on/across the water.

Maybe you can consider doing a some kind of a moat with running water that'll flow down to the main water feature of the set-up. Ants that will try to escape will get flushed to the main water feature and then maybe you can add a shore so they can return to the colony 😅

I think the controlled culling is advantageous. you turned a potential disaster into a learning opportunity. You showed how we do not need poison to control ants and really any other insect. I use Diamoatous Earth myself when dealing with insect issues, it really is the best solution. So I think continued controlled culling is in order with consideration on how to improve the barrier in the future. Maybe even a barrier that has the option to allow escape once in a while to cull the colony occasionally.
@Tank50us
@Tank50us Жыл бұрын
Yeah, he may have to cull them in the short term. But in a way that's natural... Namely: reduce their food intake so the queen won't lay as many eggs. That could buy time for a more permanent solution

Diomoatous earth is honestly a really good suggestion, put it as a extra barrier between leaving and now they have to cross both a deadly moat of earth and the talcom powder

This is just a scaled up "ac tower & outworld".. so what do you normally do when when it reaches capacity? Add more sections‼️ If the colony is seeking a site for a satellite nest, then provide one💪⚒ Since you built this formicarium as an "open concept" it will be much easier to add another stand/tank right next door and build a "bridge" from their sand area to the new tank. Or maybe even a shelved stand with *_multiple_* tanks on it, so you have a series of "outworlds" to progressively add‼️💪💯

I'd maybe suggest a moat, so place the entire enclosure as it is into a large vat of sorts with a water moat like you've done before, kind of like the floating skull island one. That way if they break the barrier again they're only going to fall into a watery abyss, this way the ants shouldn't be able to dump their discards into the water, and you might be able to keep an aquatic animal in the moat safely? Good luck!! Xx

You can get diatomaceous earth in powder form. Which leaves a lot of options on how and where to apply it. It can even be mixed with water and sprayed, when it dries, the powder stays. You can control the solution from barely there to mud thick. Maybe mixing into the talc solution would be effective in stopping them from even trying to climb the talc border? And if you could experiment with using it with other things - I'm wondering if it could be mixed with vaseline, which would eliminate the humidity problem (but maybe not the heat?), and then put a line all around the edge. Or maybe some double side tape coated with the powder? I'm even wondering if you could add in an essential oil frangrance to deter them - I don't know how good their sense of smell is to use in the ant room at all, but I've been using a concoction this summer that's been keeping all the bugs from coming into the house and it's worked really well - no ants, spiders, gnats, flies, wasps or hornets this summer....and my cats aren't bothered by the scent or the oil/water mix, and I can't smell it once it dries. Maybe wouldn't be good in your scenario - but it could be an option to keep outdoor ants from coming in and invading your colonies. I spray the curtains, screens and sills. Bunches of recipes online.

They have lived in there for a couple months now, and onyl 2 escapes... thats not terrible... you could put a glass box around your enclosure, with the ability to open the front for filming. Its still an open concept enclosure, but it has a safety perameter in place for when they find a breach every 2-3 months.

@lukasskisland

Might be to hard to pull off but maybe you could build a perimeter channel across the rim of the tank that gets filled with water and flows over creating a constant waterfall around the entire tank. Since the front is covered with sand you would also need to add canals on the inside that returns the water to the sump. It would take a lot of work and modifications to the tank with an active colony inside but if you pull it off I think it would create a cleaner look and the open concept is very cool, brave and unique and I think it’s worth finding a solution to keep it like that. Hope you find a solution.

We also have bull ants and they will take a 3/4" to 1/2" piece out of you and leave an obvious scar. Back to your Crimson Knights: Wow; and you gave them meat! As far as we know, there is no way to contain them. They will build falling towers to bridge gaps. There's even been talk of ambushes for revenge on killing mounds. A family member swears fire ants waited up in a tree near their destroyed home until he was underneath and then all jumped on him. He had stings from head to toe. Good luck 👍

Also adding chiller to this to 'moat' would make crossing the water unattractive for the Fire-ants. maybe adding a few Rainbow Shinners , White-cloud Mountain Minnows and other cold-water loving small fish to the set up would add even more security to the overall set up. Or the other option would be to create an indoor Pond with a Mountain Island on stilts. Make sure the water is Chilled and keep the Island out of the water just by several cm to prevent the Island from cooling down too much would be something New and a great addition to the Ant room!

Use an electrified barrier. It should be relatively easy to make and effective.

I’d surround the whole set up with water because I highly doubt they’ll try to move the Brood in water!

Is it possible to build a plexiglass covering around the setup? With a removable panel for feeding and cleaning of the habitat?

Maybe use a Fluon (which seems to be chemically similar to Teflon) border because they seem to be unable to stick to it.

Maybe try using a mesh or something similar instead of glass to "close it in". Like my buddy had a chameleon and it cage was a fine mesh or something so it had air flow. I think it would be cool so it would still feel more open, but it would prevent them from escaping

the ants probably need their humidity, so i would propose a second wall around the setup, where it isnt getting as humid and the slippery stuff actually works

Have you considered a barrier of Fluon (similar to Teflon, very slippery) instead of talc? And maybe a line of Tanglefoot between the glass and wood portions of your structure (to block any and all paths) as an additional precaution?

Perhaps make the front part of the glass a little taller? Maybe make it more closed off like your previous setups. In other words, make some adjustments and add some modifications to it and make sure they definitely can’t escape afterwards

I think (but this is a strech) that you could modify the area where the ants escaped to go horizontal with glass so they can't escape because they will fall.

Make an addon that converts it to a enclosed set up instead of moving them.

I have a great idea Antscanada, what if you made a table not just a table but the table is an ant farm and as you eat you watch your ants grow in population. Who thinks this is a good idea Let me know 👇

It's too wet and open so I really don't think this will work out in the long run even with regular cullings. Also an easy way to move ants out of somewhere you don't want them. Force them to move themselves. You do it yourself all the time. Remove the water and moss and once it's getting dry enough give them a tube that leads to a temp encloser with everything they need. Or try one of your hybrid nests.

Is there a way to turn off the water and the fog altogether? It wouldn’t look as cool but maybe then the chalk would work for longer

Can you try using Teflon instead? Teflon should be waterproof enough.

an enclosure around the existing setup that has a door where you can open up whenever you wish to record or sit and admire the colony in the "open" volcano(no glass between you and the ants). Then close the door when you are done. Door should have a tight seal. That way, the only chance they can attempt any escape is when you are there watching them

What if you had a waterfall ledge barrier? Something like a channel or ledge that always has water flowing through or over it? Or a moat?

I dont understand why you can just reapply the talcum occasionally? it lasted quite a while before the humidity weakened it.

You don't need to worry about bug spray seriously, it's been proven again and again that it's terrible. That's more like torture an ant instead of actually killing them. The best way to actually deal with bugs are through temperature control, either heating up or freezing. For anyone wondering.

remember how you flooded the fireants and they formed an air bubble at the bottom of the water, well all pest control is going to do is gas and poison what you want and i know this works if say you blew tobacco smoke on a pheremone trail the ants lose direction, can't find the way home or to the food, so your ventillation system you may have smoke the entire building out, the tobacco i buy is called "The Good Stuff) it's a little over $20 a pound it results in confusion you could also just have a cloud of smoke in the room so their trails stop be fore they start and outside the enclosure is the mist where no one knows what happened to those that ventured out until they are dropped back home

You could try to modify the tank maybe. Ot find a stronger barrier than talcum, if there is any.
