My first 6 MILLION score! - NES Tetris

I started playing Tetris in 1990 when I was 8 years old and got it for Christmas. Once in a while I could get to level 10 but I wasn't good enough to get past that. I didn't play it for decades after, but the recent record-breaking got me into it again via emulator. I still can't get past level 16 and my current high score is only 172k. When I watch the world's greatest players like you play it's literally stunning to me. I haven't tried rolling yet, I can't think fast enough to need it (yet?). But I still have my old NES controllers, and I don't know if they still work or if using them with a NES emulator and USB adapters works, but I'll try one of these days. Great game @Sidnev! Wanted a little too much in Level 106 with tons of burning opportunities not taken, but I can't blame you, you already had a Tetris from Level 105 with 6 million and still some way to the colors, with a better timed bar and Mrs. Droughtfire not hitting badly there, this could have easily kept going for another 2-3 million, possibly 8 figures. :)

Why do some tetrisses get the cool lightning effect and other don't? And what's a rollover? Edit: amazing achievement

I think the tetris lighting effect is due to the capture card frame rate, but I'm not 100% on that. A rollover is 1.6 million points. The uncapped score uses hexadecimal values to count the score, so A = 1.0, B = 1.1 etc. but that only goes up to F which is 1.5 million, so when the score reaches 1.6, there is no G value in hexadecimal to display that, so the score will instead "roll over" back to 0.

Why do players always start at 18? Isnt it better to start later to get a higher score or arent you allowed,?

The highest scoring potential in NES Tetris on a normal cart is 19, right below that is 18. With lower levels you get less score because you get less lines before transition.

it's harder to score on 19 because the speed is faster and sometimes it's nice to relax and play on 18 instead
