I think your set up looks great. From the few times I’ve ice camped it’s best just to pick a warmer day with minimal wind if possible. Makes the experience more enjoyable. 😊

Thanks bro! Haha yeah, definitely not ice camping in zero below temps again 😂

Covering all the ice with mats makes a huge difference!! Especially when it’s that cold. Either cut holes in a few mats or just leave 1-2 of them out to fish.

Yeah, I’ll definitely have to buy more to cover everything better next time. Thanks for the comment!

I ice camp a lot and come a little more prepared than you. For your first time, you did good for how cold it was. Having an Otter hub over the Eskimo would had made a little difference but when ice fishing that cold everything makes a difference. The little buddy heater works great for the size of your tent but when it gets below - 5 or less you will need a big buddy. Having mats that cover as much ground as possible is extremely important. Also make sure the side skirts are well covered. Check the weather and carry a backup heater in case of an emergency.

Bite has been slow all over ND last week or so,i live and fish mainly SE NoDak,went out yesterday and olnly marked 5-6 fish and got one 14" eye,second you start a slow jig,off they go.

Hopefully the bite gets better sometime. Thanks for the comment.

I heard there's not really a night bite on devils lake. But with the negative temps, probably just hit the hotel.
@BassAssassinTJ8 күн бұрын
That’s what I heard too.

I think the negative temps shut them down. My group & I went last year during end of Jan, temps were in the high 30s near 40s with very little winds. It was the perfect week to smash on them. We were catching them at night.

Gotta go do ice camping on Winnie or Leech. Them mofos bite all day into the night. Tullibees were still biting past midnight but I knocked out cuz too tired. lol

Thanks for the report. My group and I going out there at the end of Jan. The cold probably shut them off. ND is alot of SnD But when the weather dont permits, we're fu*ked

Goodluck bro! Hopefully the weather will be on your guys side around that time.

Devils is to crazy, I wouldn't recommend ice camping at all. I always get a hotel for the night and head back out to the lake early in the morning. When the bite shuts off, don't try to jig them up because they won't bother chasing it. You'll need to put the jig right in their face to get their attention, once you have their attention they will somewhat chase.

It was my buddies crazy idea to ice camp 🤣I really wanted to go with them but would've been weird if i got a hotel by myself without them. Thanks for the tips!

Devils is probably the worst lake to ice camp. The lakes around Bemidji and Grand Rapids are way better.
@BassAssassinTJ8 күн бұрын
At least I got it checked off on my list haha 😂 I’ll definitely look into those areas.

Next time set up shallow approx 15 foot for morning and evening walleye and go deep during the day for perch. Devils Lake can be difficult in the winter summer is a different story. Good Luck Tight Lines
