I worked with an old-timer once who slapped me because I told him that we should use a scale to weigh in the charge. This dinosaur was just holding onto to the suction line while he added refrigerant. I'm not gonna lie, I didn't retaliate because dude was a pretty big guy. The next day I told my service manager and by the end of the week, I was let go. After the I worked at Tom Thumb for a few months before landing another job with a residential company. I'm half Mexican and black and I guess some of the guys had issue. I was called blacky and boy a lot. After that, I got out of the industry altogether. I like HVAC but not the culture of some of the old-timers. Looking back I wished I had thicker skin, but I believe everything worked out the way it was supposed to. I wish all the best on your HVAC careers, but remember, you will run into some jerks. Don't let them run you off. Stay strong.

Man that breaks my heart brother! Being Mexican or Black isn't easy but fuck those guys and company for having that toxic culture. I had bosses criticize me for my knowledge at the time and bad habits but never experienced any racism. Definitely give HVAC a shot again. Even working in the trade like at the Local Parts Distributor. I love walking in and meeting the guys talk some shit for a bit. I'm really sorry your experience forced you out bro

Brooo, that ain't right. That is the shit I hate about the trade, but that's just the crappy people not the trade itself.

Talking shit is one thing, laying hands on another person that’s just crossing the line big time. The devil in me would have wanted to donkey Kong that dude with the ref bottle. Side note there is other jobs you can do in hvac other than service or installation find that goal and go for it make that money. Get a degree and become a engineer and slap that dude with a wade of cash.

My best advice for the new techs is to be patient and be humble. You’re gonna work with a wide variety of techs that do things differently and they’re not gonna all do things the same way. Just take each thing you learn from each tech and create your own routine when you are out on your own. And if you’re not getting the knowledge and trade experience from your current company then keep your options open because you may find a better opportunity out there.

The only thing I don't like is the "not asking questions there" part. If I have a question, I'm gonna ask. I won't annoy the person by constantly asking questions but if the dude gonna get irritated from me trying to learn, we gonna have a problem.
@richardh90483 жыл бұрын
I disagree as well. At the company I work for, if you're not asking questions on the job site, the lead techs will assume you're not invested into the trade and they let the bossman know. It's all about communication. If it isn't a good time for me to ask questions, the lead techs just let me know and I keep my mouth shut and then they'll let me know when they are okay for questions. Asking on the job site is gonna help you learn better and luckily the guys I work for understand that.

Got into HVAC 3 months ago, I’m 22. Hardest part is waking up at 5am not getting home till 6 some days. You learn a TON each day. I’m residential, mostly custom homes. But long days, make sure u always have ur tools because it sucks when ur boss asks too borrow a bit or something and u took it out of bag by accident. Big jug of water, all tools, mentality of I’m gonna go in, learn, work hard, and go home. You will do great. I’m up in Ontario, Canada. Good call too say never be on personal phone. In front of someone for that case. But just try too blend in, ask questions. And work hard, and u will have nice career in trades.

I appreciate the video. This is for the new techs. Always have an exit strategy. When you're 20, you may think it's cool climbing ladders, working outside, and being on-call, but trust me, it gets old. HVAC is a noble profession, but honestly, think seriously about getting secular education while you're younger, so you can move into management, project management or even sales. Hell, you may decide to get into the controls side of things (building automation is the future btw). If you want to be a tech when you're 45, then more power to you. I know from experience that your knees and back will thank you later for taking those online and night classes. I wish y'all the best. Keep up the good work, Teto! 🔥🔥🔥
