For my first dirt bike race, we tackled the Glen Helen 6-Hour Endurance Race on a 1990 Kawasaki KDX200! ****** Check out my recommended (and budget friendly) riding gear here! ➡️ bit.ly/ea-links
Ever since I was a kid, I always wanted to race a dirt bike. However, being able to race a dirt bike also meant owning a dirt bike, which was a luxury that I did not have when I was younger. As I got older I started riding dual sport motorcycles and trail bikes, but I never thought it would lead to anything that resembled motocross racing. However, after watching Gabe from Torture Test Magazine ironman several endurance races and complete the Glen Helen 24-Hour race as a team (which I showed up to watch the last couple hours), I decided to enter my first dirt bike race: The Glen Helen 6-Hour Endurance Race.
The 6 Hours of Glen Helen is part of an endurance race series that also includes a 10-Hour race and a 24- Hour race. For the Glen Helen 6-Hour race, you can have up to 3 people per team running two bikes; one of which must stay in a dedicated location they call the impound. You can swap riders or bikes as much as you want, but only one rider can be on the track at a time. My buddy Matt had also never raced before, so we signed up as a two-man team for our very first dirt bike race on a 1990 Kawasaki KDX200.
Matt started out the race and completed the first lap, and as soon as he came back through the pits it was my turn. Join me as I take the first full lap of my first dirt bike race at the 6 Hours of Glen Helen. Enjoy!

Thanks! The main goal for us was to finish the race... but deep down I just wanted to finish one spot above last place. After realizing how hard it was a few hours in... just finishing became the main goal again. 😆 It was an awesome time regardless though. Thanks for watching!

Thanks man! I'm really glad we decided to do the 6 hour as our first race instead of jumping straight into the 24 last year. I don't think that would have ended well... 😆 We learned a ton at the 6 hour and had a great time. Can't wait to get out there again!

Good for you Josh! Maybe I'm the only one but I prefer listening to a voice-over video more than the somewhat monotonous sound of motorcycle engines. The ideal for me would be having the voice-over with the camera audio as softer background sound. Anyway, thanks for posting the video. Was this the race that Gabe went to recently?
@EachAdventure
@EachAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dave! Had the audio worked, would still have done a voiceover type video with the engine sounds toned down a bit... it was just a bummer to find out that every single video from the race had no sound. I'm trying to make the best of what I got though. Yep, Gabe was there too! He had the pit spot right next to us and it was awesome to be out on the track with him. We might be teaming up for the 10 hour in June!

Man this was suuuuuuper cool to watch. Too bad they don't have a vintage class, so you don't have to worry about brand new 450s flying past you. And I know what you mean about the other riders' speed. Guys that ride track are so crazy fast, it's humbling.
@EachAdventure
@EachAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brent! A vintage class would have been cool, but it wouldn't really have made a difference in this race since all of the classes are out on the track at the same time. It's definitely humbling!

Makes me want to enter next year! For a first timer I’d have to say that was pretty decent riding. Stay within your abilities and have a good time. Experience and practice is the only thing to improve riding skills. So great job! Can’t wait to get together next month sometime and go thrash some trails/hills/desert!
@EachAdventure

Thanks Matt! It's definitely something you gotta try at least once. I was trying really hard not to push it, and even though I was taking it easy it was still exhausting lol. What I have noticed is that for the most part I can pass the skills test... but I get fatigued super quick. I definitely need to get myself in better shape for this kind of stuff!

Heck yeah man, thats awesome! My buddy hurt his foot the week before, so I was almost in that situation myself. Luckily it was feeling better a few days before the race... I don't think I could have finished the whole 6 hours by myself. Mad props for doing that thing on your own! We are planning on doing the 10 hour, so defiantly feel free to stop by if you are there!

Kudos to you for doing the race. You would have easily passed me a few times. lol If you were on your Beta you would have killed! Cool you saw Gabe, I got to meet and ride with him last fall on a rally with Tyler in Utah. Gabe is an amazing rider! Great video! I do like voice over videos as well. Yes, you don't hear the sound of bike but you also don't get unclear audio or wind noise imo.
@EachAdventure
@EachAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! The Beta definitely would have been nice just because of the suspension. The KDX did not like it out there when it started getting all rocky and whooped out. Gabe is a super cool dude, and an absolute madman on a motorcycle! I am super stoked that I had the opportunity to race with him. We are planning on teaming up with him for the 10 hour in June!

@EachAdventure
@EachAdventure 3 жыл бұрын
We wanted to race an old bike just to see if we could finish the race on it. We were definitely the underdogs of the race, but everyone loves a good underdog story, right? 😆 Apparently the KDX is also pretty cheap to fix and easy to work on... so we figured that if it got destroyed it wouldn't take much to bring it back to life!

Did good. No need in running your bike ragged to run with full race bikes. My son races and it's expensive to maintain a bike and only ride a few minutes of the day each weekend. I can run my kdx200e doing trail riding all day throughout the yr and not have a ⅓ in upkeep cost as someone that races on the weekends. I've had 3 kdx200e bikes and putting a fourth together now, full rebuild top to bottom. Love the kdx models but not a fan of the aluminum KIPS components.

We rode that KDX in 3 separate races, and aside from losing the muffler and the rear fender it never let us down. Such a great bike!
