Did a road ride like that once. Me & my riding buddy used to try to get in 25 miles at a 15-20mph pace a few times a week after work. One day, the skies just opened up and it didn't rain cats & dogs, but lions & wolves on us. I'm talking about pellets of water the size of grapes. It started after our first 6 mile loop. We stopped and said, whaddaya ya' wanna do? I said (expletive) it, let's keep goin'. He said, "yeah"? I said, hell yeah. He smiled, we clipped in and put in that work. I told him that if I was alone, I would've called it. He said the same thing, but we rode that ride out together, got in the full 25 miles for the day and went home feelin' like champs. That was our little epic ride. We didn't let each other down and every other ride has felt like a piece of cake compared to that one. When you ride with a good partner, it draws the best out of you. We fed off of each other.

I'm 38yo, 5'11" and 280 pounds. Just got my first xc bike last month and I've been loving it. But after binge watching your channel for a few days, I'm starting to think what I really wanted is a gravel bike. Anyway. Thanks for making this channel and being an inspiration. I'm not about to turn 40 whilst overweight. And your videos give me so much motivation to eat well and put down some miles. Who knows, maybe someday I'll find myself riding next to ya. lol that would be so wild.

Good for you dude. I have an XC, gravel and fat bike. Time and a place for each! I’m 45, lost 33 lbs and feel better than I did when I was 35. Keep riding, brotha and enjoy it! Sign up for something crazy and then tell everyone about it. It’ll force you to train and hold yourself accountable!

You want the XC bike with improved gearing, alternate bars, and gravel tires. An XC bike is the most versatile bike you can buy. How do I know? I built a gravel bike and realized what I need is an XC bike with the above. 😂

This post is a year old. I've since fallen in love with my local mtb trails. I even hit a lot of the jumps. So my xc bike is just fine. I've stuck with the flat bars, even raised them just a tad when I got my air fork. Also got to take it on a bike camping trip through joshua tree two months ago. Great times. Kept up with my buddy, who has a gravel bike, just fine.@@chadwells7562

OMG, I went for a ride a couple months ago and i wore the thinnest damned gloves i own, and it was 39 degrees, and your comments on thawing out your hands PERFECTLY described my experience. I ended up lying on the carpet in my house with my hands tucked into my shirt for about 10 minutes just PRAYING they would unthaw because they hurt soooo bad. When you said "I walked around... trying to get away from my hands because my hands hurt so much", I laughed because I know the feeling. Ouch ouch ouch! That was the perfect description. Thank you!

Kind of late to this vid, but couldn't resist the urge to inform you that you were undercooled. The fact that you start to shiver after warming up confirms that. It's a well known phenomonom known among the swimmers that cross the English/Belgian canal. Great content as always!

Tyler, love your videos. They are the only ones I really watch that often tell a story instead of teaching. I am from upstate NY not so far south of Canada. One trick we use is to wear nitrile gloves (those purple/blue ones they use in hospitals) under winter gloves. It gets gross (they fill with sweat), but it keeps you warm. Thanks for the great videos!

Something I learned from cycling in Norway, always bring some nitrile gloves that are big enough to go over your gloves, they will save you butt in cold rain or harsh unexpected cold winds. Also, a toilet wax paper cover, is awesome on your chest to break the wind from chilling you, after you warm up, roll it up and put in in your pocket. Extremely light, and serve multiple uses. Like the toilet cover, it also serves as bib for eating messy pasta with frozen limbs.

You should check out the Rooted Vermont Gravel Race put on by Ted King and his wife Laura. 84 miles of roughly 75% gravel and 25% tarmac plus 2 sections of class 4 roads. 7800 feet of climbing. First week in August so the weather is beautiful. They also offer a 48 mile race which is what i did this year and it was awesome. 4300 feet of climbing. You should come next year and do a video on it. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.

Impressive coverage, I wish I had the clearance on my frame for real Gravel tires :) Congrats this is how I felt as a commuter during this winter, minus all the glory for finishing a race, the glory was for living to see an other day.
